Laurie Evans rescues tough chase to put Oval Invincibles second

Invincibles guaranteed knockout place if they beat Southern Brave on Monday night

Laurie Evans rescued a tough chase with 67 not out off 37 balls to put Oval Invincibles second in the table heading into the final round of group games, ensuring they will qualify for the Hundred’s knockout stages if they beat Southern Brave on Monday night.Invincibles slipped to 14 for 3 in pursuit of 147 on a slowish pitch, and were wobbling at 52 for 4 when Evans came in at No. 6 to join Will Jacks. With three genuine tailenders from No. 9-11, there was no margin for error, but he launched a stunning counterattack to relieve the scoring pressure.Jacks’ dismissal, pulling Ravi Bopara straight to long-on, precipitated another stumble. Evans continued to score freely but Alex Blake and Tom Curran were both bowled, and Saqib Mahmood was run out looking for two with six needed off six balls. When Blake Cullen missed his yorker, Evans smoked him for six over long-on, keeping Oval’s perfect home record intact and lifting 19,000 home fans off their seats.Spirit, the Hundred’s runaway horse after losing their first four completed games, had scrambled up to a par score thanks to Eoin Morgan’s 41 – which included five sixes – and a late cameo from Roelof van der Merwe, with Tabraiz Shamsi and Sunil Narine again coming to the fore in the middle phase, as they have throughout Invincibles’ unbeaten home run. While Invincibles are guaranteed a knockout spot if they win their final game, they can still qualify with a defeat if other results go their way.Evans’ epic
Evans has spent the last four years batting almost exclusively in the top three for his various teams around the world, but has been forced into the middle order due to Invincibles’ top-order strength. He was stranded at No. 8 in their last game, much to his frustration, and admitted that his position had changed so many times in the competition that he wasn’t sure of the score when he came in.He signalled his intent early with a perfect one, two, three off van der Merwe – a fierce slap through point off the back foot sandwiched between two lofted sixes over wide long-off – and scored the only boundary of the night off Mason Crane’s bowling with a monstrous slog-sweep over midwicket. His strike rate of 181.81 owed much to his ability to hit the gaps and run hard, as well as his boundary-hitting: he hit seven of the 37 balls he faced for two, playing clips and pushes with soft hands to hit the fielders in the deep.”It’s one of the hardest things to do, particularly when guys at the top of the order haven’t really got going,” Morgan said. “You need to focus on process-driven things in order to take you where you need to be and Laurie did that. He constructed his innings really well, adapted to situations – they ran twos and ran us around the field when they needed to, and then attacked the boundary when it was appropriate. It was as well as I’ve seen him play.”Evans said: “I’ve been up and down the order in this side. My mindset is that if you’re there at the end, you’re going to win the game. I’ve done that throughout my career and I take pride in doing it. I haven’t really got going in the Hundred so it’s nice to put a match-winning knock in – I’m grateful to Moods [Tom Moody]. You work as hard as you can to improve year on year and I’ve experienced a lot of things now, so it’s just nice to produce it in this tournament.”Jacks in a box
Evans was quick to praise Jacks’ innings and without it, the chase would have been over before it had begun. Jason Roy and Narine had holed out to fielders in the deep in the space of three balls from van der Merwe and with Colin Ingram falling cheaply, seemingly suffering some discomfort after being hit on the elbow, Jacks’ 44 was a vital knock. He was crucial in making use of the Powerplay: Invincibles were 14 for 3 with eight balls left of it, but he hit four boundaries in five balls by clipping Brad Wheal off his pads, then cutting and sweeping van der Merwe for three in a row. He also pulled two sixes – one out of the screws, the other fumbled over the rope by an off-balance Joe Cracknell – and offered some support for Evans in a stand of 57; the next-highest score of the innings was Sam Billings’ 9.Morgan’s moment
Morgan was a long-term advocate of a city-based short-form competition in England to rival the Big Bash and IPL and has been vocal in his praise of the Hundred throughout its first season, suggesting 10 days in that it was “already better” than the T20 Blast. But on the pitch, he had struggled to make much of an impact: his first five innings brought 85 runs with a top score of 27, and his Spirit side were eliminated at the earliest possibility opportunity after four consecutive defeats. His own struggles with the bat were an extension of a wider pattern, too: his top score across 14 innings in the Blast, England’s T20Is and the Hundred this summer was 38, and he had only scored at a 140+ strike rate in three of them.”I’ve had a slow start to this competition and it’s been disappointing, to be honest,” he said afterwards. “As a senior player you want to score runs earlier in the tournament and contribute more, and I haven’t done that.”This was a welcome return to form. Billings tried to sneak in five balls of Jacks’ offspin, with him turning the ball away from the left-hander, but Morgan decided to take him on and flay him for four over extra cover, then six over square leg. His best shot was a cross-batted swat down the ground for six off Saqib Mahmood, skipping down the pitch and taking on an 88mph short ball, and he eventually fell for 41 off 20, top-edging a catch while trying to slog-sweep Shamsi for a third consecutive six.

Ashworth wants to beat Real Madrid to "underrated" ace Man Utd have scouted

Looking to get back among Europe’s elite both on and off the pitch, Manchester United now reportedly want to beat some European heavyweights in the race to sign an attacking reinforcement.

Man Utd transfer news

The Red Devils had an impressive transfer window this summer. On paper, every one of their weaknesses was strengthened in some capacity. They welcomed Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui to solve their defensive issues, Manuel Ugarte to replace Casemiro, and Joshua Zirkzee to sharpen an otherwise blunt frontline. Yet, five games into their Premier League campaign, not much has changed.

Whilst some may believe that the summer transfer window was enough to see Manchester United take a large step towards returning to Europe’s elite, those at Old Trafford are seemingly only just getting started, with one attacking reinforcement reportedly eyed for 2025.

According to reports in Spain, sporting director Dan Ashworth now wants to beat Real Madrid and Liverpool in the race to sign Kevin Zenon for Manchester United in 2025. The Red Devils have reportedly scouted the Boca Juniors star, who has a low release clause amid the interest of several parties from around European football.

Solskjaer almost sold Man Utd star who's now Ten Hag's "standout player"

ByJack Salveson Holmes Sep 28, 2024

Just 23 years old, Zenon would fit into the profile of players that INEOS want to focus their transfer strategy on, given that he is under 26 years old and a cheaper alternative to more established stars. The left-hand side is a position that is arguably up for grabs under Erik ten Hag following Marcus Rashford’s year-long struggle to find form, which could see Zenon steal a starting spot.

"Underrated" Zenon is ready for Man Utd move

Completing a move to Old Trafford is often one full of pressure – a pressure that several players have been crushed by. Zenon could now be next in a long line of attacking reinforcements to have his turn at boosting Ten Hag’s frontline once and for all. With that pressure, Manchester United could unearth a diamond, whom analyst Ben Mattinson previously dubbed “underrated”.

That said, the Argentine is yet to reach his full potential and is not a player who’d be making an instant impact at Old Trafford as a finished product. Instead, the Red Devils would need to work on developing and unearthing their potential new star if they secure his signature in 2025.

With four goals and seven assists for Boca Juniors since January, it’s clear that Ten Hag would need to work on Zenon’s output first and foremost. The last thing that Manchester United’s current attack needs is another winger who struggles in front of goal.

102 touches, 17 duels won: Spurs ace was superb for his country

Tottenham Hotspur endured a tough final outing before the ongoing international break, losing 3-2 to Brighton despite holding a two-goal lead at the break.

The absence of Premier League football has undoubtedly given boss Ange Postecoglou an opportunity to mull over the embarrassing defeat, conjuring a plan to avoid such a result in the future.

Before the loss on the South Coast, Spurs were enjoying a five-game winning run, but it all came to a crashing end, either the supporters hoping that the result doesn’t derail their Champions League aspirations.

However, the international fixtures over the last few days have prevented Postecoglou from working with his side ahead of the return of club football this weekend.

It has allowed some players to star for their respective nations, potentially helping them arrive back in North London full of confidence ahead of the derby meeting with West Ham United.

Spurs' best players on international duty

Striker Dominic Solanke has already found the back of the net three times for Spurs since his club-record move this summer, allowing him to finally become part of the England national team.

The 27-year-old received his first call-up in seven years and whilst not starting the meeting with Greece last week, the forward did lay on the assist for Jude Bellingham, as Lee Carsley’s side fell to defeat at Wembley.

The international break couldn’t have come at a worse time for winger Brennan Johnson, after his career-best run of scoring in six consecutive games for Postecoglou’s side.

However, the Welsh star has continued his personal run, scoring in the 2-2 draw with Iceland and taking his run to seven games for club and country.

Full-back Pedro Porro has been handed a regular starting role for Spain during this round of fixtures after Dani Carvajal’s ACL injury – with the Spurs ace taking his opportunity with both hands.

The 25-year-old was hugely impressive on Tuesday night, registering an assist and helping the European Champions keep a clean sheet in the 3-0 win over Serbia.

However, despite the aforementioned trio’s impressive performances, one other first-team star excelled last night – producing some mind-boggling stats in the process.

Spurs ace stars on the international stage

Midfielder Pape Sarr had already impressed at club level so far during the 2024/25 campaign, registering two goals and one assist – with both of his strikes coming in the Europa League.

He didn’t start the latest defeat to Brighton, coming on as a 79th-minute substitute, but the international break has allowed the 22-year-old to star for Senegal, producing some incredible figures in their 1-0 win over Malawi on Tuesday.

Sarr featured for the entirety of the victory, registering a whopping total of 102 touches and completing 65 passes at a completion rate of 91%.

He also completed seven dribbles as he played a huge role in progressing the play in possession, but it was his numbers out of possession that caught the eye.

The midfielder won a staggering 17 duels during the victory, whilst also completing three tackles and making two interceptions – playing a vital role at the heart of the Senegal side.

Such figures will give the youngster a huge confidence boost ahead of the return to club football in the coming days, doing his chances of a start under Postecoglou no harm.

Sarr’s display showcased how capable he is as a box-to-box option, providing that solidity that the Spurs midfielder looked to have lacked before the recent international break.

Manchester Test to go ahead as entire India squad tests negative

The fate of the fifth Test was in balance after India’s assistant physio Yogesh Parmar tested Covid-19 positive

The Manchester Test is back on. Its fate was in balance after India’s assistant physio Yogesh Parmar tested Covid-19 positive on Wednesday evening. But the BCCI, after discussions with the Indian team management and the ECB as well, has now made it clear that the final Test of the Pataudi series will go ahead as scheduled. This was the most likely outcome as soon as the entire Indian squad were found to be negative for the virus, although they did have to deal with a day’s worth of uncertainty.Beyond the Manchester Test, the BCCI had also been concerned that Parmar testing positive could have a cascading effect on the second half the IPL, which starts in the UAE from September 19. On September 15, a bulk of the India and England players are scheduled to board charter flights to Dubai to join their respective IPL franchises. The BCCI does not want the IPL to be impacted as it is scheduled to host the men’s 2021 T20 World Cup in the UAE and Oman two days after the IPL ends, on October 15.On Thursday morning the BCCI’s top brass conducted a virtual meeting with the Indian team management including captain Virat Kohli and head coach Ravi Shastri to figure a way forward. It is understood that the Indian players had been concerned about the threat of Covid-19 but they left the final decision with the BCCI.Through Thursday the BCCI engaged in discussions with the ECB on the way forward in case more cases were to break out in the Indian camp. The BCCI also put out the option of cancelling the final Test, but the ECB is understood to have made it clear that it would interpret any refusal to play as forfeiture. The BCCI was keen to avoid such a scenario as not only would it see England square the series, but it could expose them to claims of lost revenue from broadcasters and the venue. The lost revenue could be up to £30 million (INR 306 crore). The World Test Championship playing conditions, though, state that a Covid-19 outbreak within a team is an acceptable reason for a Test to be abandoned. With the WTC table now based on the percentage of points available, a four-Test series instead of five would not have impacted any side’s final tally. In case the final Test had not been played, India would pocket 26 WTC points while England will have 14 out of the 48 that was available.Parmar was found to be Covid-positive on Wednesday evening after he reported having symptoms at the end of a training session. He is the fourth member of the Indian contingent to test positive in the last week. On September 4, after the third day of the Oval Test, India head coach Ravi Shastri returned a positive test and the BCCI medical team identified Bharat Arun, R Sridhar and head physiotherapist Nitin Patel as the immediate contacts for Shastri. The next morning Shastri along with Arun and Sridhar returned positive RT-PCR tests, thus sending them into ten-day quarantine. Patel, meanwhile, returned a negative test but remained in his room in London. He then travelled separately by road to Manchester where he is understood to be staying on a separate floor from the rest of the Indian squad at the team hotel. At the moment, little is known about Parmar’s immediate contacts. He has been treating several key Indian players for niggles, including Rohit Sharma, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Siraj, Mohammed Shami and Ishant Sharma. These players have been mingling among the wider group.According to the UK government’s Covid-19 guidelines, any person who receives a positive PCR test for Covid-19 is obliged to self-isolate for ten days. However, those identified as close contacts don’t need to isolate themselves if they test negative and it has been more than 14 days since their second jab.The ECB has relaxed its protocols around biosecure bubbles with its chief executive officer Tom Harrison declaring that “cricket must learn to live with Covid” and accept some “risks” while maintaining basic social distancing and medical guidelines That has allowed the Indians to travel on trains across England between the Tests and step out of team hotels and go for walks as well as sit at outdoor cafes. On the eve of the Oval Test, Shastri organised an event for his book launch that was attended by members of the public along with the Indian squad.

Virat Kohli: 'They didn't let us come into the game at any stage'

India’s captain conceded that Pakistan’s powerplay bowling had left them too much catching up to do

Virat Kohli – ‘We’re not a team that presses the panic button’

After India suffered their first defeat to Pakistan in World Cups, losing by ten wickets, Virat Kohli admitted that his side was outplayed. In response to India’s 151 for 7, Pakistan rattled off the target in 17.5 overs with both their openers, Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan, hitting unbeaten half-centuries. It was India’s first ten-wicket defeat in T20Is.”They [Pakistan] definitely outplayed us. There’s no doubt about that,” Kohli said. “You don’t win by ten wickets if you don’t outplay the opposition. We didn’t even get any chances – they were very professional and you definitely have to give them credit. We tried our best and we tried to create enough pressure on them, but they had the answers. There is no shame in accepting that a team played better than you.”When you step onto the field as 11 players from either side, you have an equal opportunity to win the game and there’s no guarantee that you will go out there and win every match. But, having said that you also don’t go out there being casual, right? So, we tried our best, we made a decent total out of our situation and we thought we could put them under pressure, but they didn’t let us come into the game at any stage. They definitely deserve the credit for finishing off the game very strongly and not allowing us to put any pressure on them through the innings.”Related

Kohli reckoned that the onset of dew later in the night made life difficult for India’s attack. Earlier in the evening, Babar had opted to bowl first, citing concerns around dew.”I wouldn’t say that it [conditions] became very, very difficult but if the pitch becomes a little better to bat on, you get off to a start, you start feeling more confident about the chase and that’s what happened,” Kohli said. “The more dew came in towards the second half of the Pakistan innings, ten overs onwards and they were able to rotate strike. We weren’t even able to get dot balls in because the pitch was obviously providing a bit more pace for the batsmen to work with. The slower balls were not holding up as much.Virat Kohli believes the break in India’s schedule will help them•ICC via Getty

“So, these small little factors, they make a massive difference and as a team you need to understand what was the reality of the situation out there in the middle and that’s where those 20-25 extra runs would’ve been good. But brilliant bowling in the first six didn’t allow us to get those extra runs. We know how exactly the game went and where it went wrong and we have absolute clarity of that. That’s a good thing to know where you went wrong so that you can work on it and try and correct it and move forward. We still have a lot of matches in this tournament and if we stick to the processes we follow we definitely feel like we can overcome these mistakes.”Watch cricket live on ESPN+

India will next face New Zealand at the same venue on Sunday. Kohli welcomed the week-long break, saying it will help the side reflect on their opening loss and fine-tune their plans for the rest of the tournament. Kohli had also raised concerns around player burnout in trying to cover-up for cricket lost to Covid-19 on the eve of the match. India have had a particularly busy schedule, home and away, in bio-bubbles of varying elasticities, in the past year.”I think it [the break] works really well for us from all points of view, knowing that we’ve played a full-fledged season already,” Kohli said. “We’ve played the IPL, which is very high-octane by itself in testing conditions here in the UAE and then we come into the World Cup. So, for us, these big breaks are definitely something that will help us as a team to be in the prime physical condition that we need to play this high-intensity tournament.”A T20 World Cup is always a high-intensity tournament. It will help us to regroup as a team to get to the practice sessions, eager to execute the things we want to and prepare in a very confident manner and then arrive on the day again to make sure again this time we execute our plans. We have enough confidence in our ability that with this preparation time we will come out once again being in a positive frame of mind. So, for us as a team, personally I can say it’s a good thing that is happening. We will have time to reflect and prepare again.”
