West Ham could hire Lopetegui replacement who "oozes class"

David Moyes parted ways with West Ham United this summer after two spells at the club between 2017-2024. In this time, Moyes took charge of 261 games for the Hammers, averaging 1.53 points per match in his second spell, and a slightly worse 1.19 points per game in his first spell.

In the 2022/23 season, Moyes led his side to a historic UEFA Conference League final, beating Fiorentina 2-1 and winning the competition, something that will go down in folklore for both himself and the club.

However, after finishing ninth in the Premier League in 2023/24, missing out on European football, conceding 74 goals and losing 14 games, the Hammers decided to look elsewhere in an attempt to rebrand their style of play and move forwards.

Julen Lopetegui's start at West Ham

Since taking the reins, Julen Lopetegui has struggled to shape his West Ham side into his ideal structure. After eight Premier League games, the Hammers sit 15th in the league, winning two, drawing two, and losing four times. They have also conceded 15 goals, only scoring 11.

Their poor form includes big losses to their London rivals, losing 3-0 to Chelsea at the London Stadium, and tasting a 4-1 defeat against Tottenham. When results like this are happening on the pitch, the fans need an identity and idea to get behind, but Lopetegui is currently struggling on that front too.

Widely seen as a 4-3-3, possession-based coach, Lopetegui was tasked with turning a team that averaged just 40.5% possession last season and conceded 74 goals, into a more controlled side, that could dictate the tempo against the opposition, and control large periods of matches.

So far, the Spaniard actually has managed to increase their possession average, currently sitting at 45.1% possession. Their passing accuracy has also increased slightly, going from 79.1% to 82.8%, something which is done by playing more short passes, slowing the tempo down at times, and being less direct (a very prominent feature of a Moyes side).

However, whilst certain metrics are slowly improving under Lopetegui when you look beneath the surface, the results are worse than they were under Moyes, and the current manager will be under pressure to continue to implement his style but also maintain a base level of results, that doesn’t continue to drag them into the bottom half of the table, and closer to the relegation zone.

If the 58-year-old cannot do both simultaneously, the Hammers could be forced into making a change just a few months into the season, and one name that has emerged is an ex-West Ham player, who made 154 appearances for the club, scoring six goals and providing four assists.

A potential option to replace Lopetegui

According to reports from The Express, one managerial option for West Ham could be Middlesbrough manager, and ex-Hammers player, Michael Carrick.

Tom Cleverly has praised Carrick, stating he “oozes class” in an interview, and this could be the exact modern manager type West Ham fans could get behind during this process.

Middlesbrough managerMichaelCarrick

The 43-year-old left West Ham back in 2004, joining London rivals, Tottenham Hotspur, before he made his move to Manchester United, becoming a legend there. But now in his early managerial career, Carrick led Middlesbrough to eighth in the Championship last season, winning 20 games, drawing nine, and losing 17.

But it isn’t the English managers’ record that makes him an exciting option. Instead, it is the style he is implementing so early on in his career to great success, often setting up in a 4-2-3-1 on paper, but platforming his side in several ways, both in and out of possession, to achieve different things.

Hayden-Hackney-and-Michael-Carrick

Much like many of the elite modern managers, the Boro boss’ team build up from goal kicks in a 4-2-4 formation, often with the nominal back four across the back, a double pivot in the middle, two high and wide wingers, and the striker + number ten centrally, forming that box shape with the two pivot players.

When they progress further up the pitch, Carrick’s team form that common 3-2-5 shape, which we are seeing many replicate in the modern game. One of the full-backs will be on the more attacking side, providing width, allowing the winger on that same side to drift inside, alongside the number ten, to create a line of four behind the striker to form that front five.

This means the other full-back stays slightly more disciplined, almost as a wide central defender, in order to keep three in that first line, with the double pivot staying in front of the back three, forming that 3-2-5 shape.

How Carrick could revitalise Kudus

One man the former Irons star could get the best out of, is Mohammed Kudus, a player who has started this new campaign under Lopetegui in a much slower fashion than he did last season for Moyes.

Mohammed Kudus celebrates for West Ham

In the 2023/24 campaign, Kudus netted 14 goals in 45 appearances, whilst this season, the 24-year-old has only netted twice in his first ten outings.

But if Carrick was to take over, the Ghanaian would have a slightly freer role, with the ability to drift centrally from the wing, getting himself into more areas to unleash that deadly left-footed strike of his, carry the ball into the box, and threaten the opposition in a variety of ways.

Allowing the 24-year-old to use that high volume of shooting, get in and around the box more often, and create chances for himself and others (shown by his 3.62 shot-creating actions per 90), it would not only get the best out of him but also many other forwards for his team.

Kudus is just one player Carrick’s appointment could get the best out of, and if Lopetegui is to be replaced, the West Ham board would definitely be looking at a brilliant option with plenty of potential.

Wolves fans spot new Chris Kavanagh mistake before Man City’s goal (Video)

An incident involving a tackle on a Wolverhampton Wanderers player in the build up to Manchester City’s goal has emerged, putting a bigger shadow over referee Chris Kavanagh after Sunday’s controversy.

Gary O’Neil and his Wolves side are still without a win in the Premier League, but they will be pleased with their performance against the Blues, with their anger directed at the performance of Kavanagh rather than any of the players.

Wolves star performed even better than Larsen despite the goal.

ByConnor Holden Oct 20, 2024 Wolves’ wait for a Premier League win continues

Wolves came into the game against Pep Guardiola’s side sitting at the bottom of the table, and an easy win for the away side was expected. However, Wolves made sure that wasn’t the case, as they took an early lead and put in a very impressive display. Josko Gvardiol levelled the away side, and then a dramatic and questionable goal from John Stones in the last minute sealed the win for City.

The incident at the end of the game has been the talking point, with O’Neil believing there “could be an unconscious bias” towards the bigger teams in the league when it comes to refereeing decisions: “I can categorically tell you they don’t mean to.

“They are 100 per cent honest. I just know from a human point of view it’s tough. I feel different playing Manchester City than someone else in the Carabao Cup first round. I’m sure they feel it; they are human. I don’t know if I’m miles off; it just feels there could be.”

He added: “If I had to upset someone in the street and there’s a big and little guy in the street, I’m upsetting the little guy. There is something in there, and they don’t do it on purpose and are doing the best job they can. Maybe there’s something which just edges it in that direction when it’s really tight.”

Meanwhile, on the positive front for Wolves, former Premier League player Nigel Re-Coker hopes the Midlands side take the same “desire” shown against Man City into their other games this season. But while Wolves may be just about calming down from Sunday’s match, a new incident has emerged in the lead up to City’s goal.

Chris Kavanagh missed a clear foul before Man City's goal

As stated, Man City claimed all three points away at Wolves on Sunday in a fashion that has been labelled controversial. Now, footage has emerged of a tackle on a Wolves player before that goal that could have been blown up for a foul and therefore seen the game end all square.

Goncalo Guedes was carrying the ball towards the City goal when, it appears, he was pushed to the ground before losing the ball. City had a couple of corners between this and the goal, so it wasn’t an incident that led directly to the goal, but it all happened within the space of a couple of minutes.

This is footage that will annoy Wolves fans even more and raise even more questions after O’Neil’s comments about unconscious bias towards the bigger Premier League teams.

Grant Bradburn steps down as PCB's head of high-performance coaching

He is the fourth high-profile name in the coaching set-up to leave since Ramiz Raja took over as PCB chairman

Grant Bradburn has stepped down as the head of coaching at PCB’s high-performance centre (HPC) 18 months before his contract was due to get over “to pursue further coaching opportunities”, the PCB said on Friday.”It has been an honour and privilege to serve Pakistan, providing challenge and support, to drive the players, coaches and teams forward,” Bradburn said in a statement. “I will leave PCB grateful for the wonderful opportunities and the experiences I have gained. As a foreigner, I felt welcomed and valued by my present and former PCB colleagues, players, officials and the Pakistan public. I have always felt safe here, loved exploring this wonderful country and made many lifetime friends.Related

Ramiz Raja vows to 'reset Pakistan cricket's compass'

Bradburn looks to revolutionise Pak coaching structure

“My wife Maree and three children have also sacrificed a lot in allowing me to serve Pakistan cricket. Covid-19 regulations made it challenging for them to visit Pakistan and feel the warmth, love and friendship this country offers. It is now time for me to prioritise family and move forward to the next coaching challenge.”Bradburn, the former New Zealand allrounder, had been working in Pakistan for the last three years, first as the national men’s side’s fielding coach, since September 2018, before taking over the new role at the HPC in May 2020 when the National Cricket Academy was revamped.Bradburn became the fourth high-profile individual in the coaching set-up to resign since Ramiz Raja took over as the chairman of the board. Misbah-ul-Haq and Waqar Younis were the first ones to step down from their respective roles as head coach and bowling coach of the men’s national team, which was followed by the exit of PCB CEO Wasim Khan.A number of prominent people have left the PCB set-up since Ramiz Raja’s appointment•Associated Press

The HPC took shape after Wasim brought in David Parsons, a former director of the ECB’s high-performance centre, in 2019 to look at the system and suggest recommendations. The report was filed in 2020, and after that, the PCB’s department for domestic cricket and the national cricket academy were merged to form a new set-up, the HPC, which takes care of many things, including regulating the domestic circuit and developing cricketers for the highest level. The PCB’s medical department, which worked independently earlier, was also integrated with the HPC.The setup was also changed in a big way at the same time, with a new batch of employees brought in and prominent names such as Mudassar Nazar, Haroon Rasheed and Ali Zia released. Bradburn was joined by Saqlain Mushtaq, as head of international player development, and Nadeem Khan as director. Former internationals Mohammad Yousuf (batting), Mohammad Zahid (bowling) and Atiq-uz-Zaman (fielding and wicketkeeping) were also included as coaches.Nadeem said in a statement, “Grant served Pakistan cricket with passion and dedication. He was always full of energy and ideas, a number of which he implemented following the restructuring of the National High Performance Centre. I thank Grant for his contributions to Pakistan cricket and wish him well in his future endeavours.”ESPNcricinfo understands that the PCB will look for a replacement for Bradburn, but on a later date.

Alongside Kuhn: Celtic can soon profit on star whose value has soared 100%

The first phase of the new Champions League format may only be at its midpoint, but Scottish champions Celtic already looked well placed to progress into at least the playoff rounds, having picked up seven points from four outings in Europe’s premier competition.

Perched nicely above the likes of Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, no less, the Old Firm giants have richly deserved their improved fortunes on the continental stage, having powered to victories over both Slovan Bratislava and – more impressively – RB Leipzig, while also holding firm away to a rampant Atalanta side.

There was that night in Dortmund, yet that harrowing affair looks like being something of an anomaly rather than the norm this time around, with Brendan Rodgers having fashioned a far more competitive outfit that can properly challenge Europe’s elite.

Front of centre of Tuesday’s triumph over Leipzig – as well as the season so far as a whole – has been Nicolas Kuhn, with the German wizard having taken on the mantle of being the Hoops’ new talisman.

Nicholas Kuhn's season in numbers

Plucked from Rapid Vienna on a £3m deal back in January, it’s fair to say that it proved a slow start to life in Glasgow for the promising winger, as he ended the campaign with just three goals and three assists for his new club in all competitions.

Celtic winger Nicolas Kuhn.

That bedding-in period saw Kuhn forced to battle it out with long-serving veteran, James Forrest, for a starting role on the right flank, with Rodgers even hailing the Scotsman as the club’s “best winger” back in March. The tables have now surely turned.

Ever since pre-season – where the 24-year-old notably bagged a brace against Manchester City in July – the former Germany youth international has been in electric form, having now racked up nine goals and ten assists already across all fronts.

Now looking like the man to fill the goal-scoring and creative void of Matt O’Riley, Kuhn’s greatest night thus far undoubtedly came in midweek, having pulled the hosts level at Parkhead with a stunning, long-range curler, before completing the comeback with a well-taken finish just before the break.

The dazzling left-footer truly is a joy to behold on that right-hand side, with the hope being that he stays put in Glasgow for the long haul, despite reports that “several Premier League clubs” have already lodged enquiries, according to German journalist, Florian Plettenberg.

Of course, that almost laughable €10m (£9m) valuation must be taken with a pinch of salt, although it does indicate the rise that Kuhn has enjoyed in less than 12 months at Celtic Park, as he looks to follow in the footsteps of the likes of O’Riley and Jota who departed for Scottish record fees.

While a £25m price tag – which has also been mooted for Kuhn amid Brentford interest – may appear out of reach for another of Rodgers’ shining bunch, it looks as if the Premiership side won’t just be making a significant profit on Kuhn in the years to come…

The Celtic star whose value has soared

While Rodgers can take the credit for the capture of Kuhn, the Northern Irishman must doff the cap to his predecessor, Ange Postecoglou, for the signing of another of his key lieutenants, in the form of Alistair Johnston.

Market Movers

Football FanCast's Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club's star player or biggest flop worth today?

Signed back in December 2022 amid his commitments for Canada at the World Cup in Qatar, the right-back has swiftly made that £3.5m fee look like something of a bargain, such is his growing importance in Rodgers’ ranks.

In truth, Johnston’s quality, passion and commitment have all been evident ever since he was thrust into the Old Firm derby on debut back in January 2023, with it a testament to his character that not only was he thrown in at the deep end by Postecoglou, but that he swam rather than sank.

The former Montreal star ended that first campaign with one goal and two assists to his name under the current Tottenham Hotspur boss, before adding one goal and seven assists in 2023/24 under Rodgers.

Now even tasked with taking on the captain’s armband in the absence of Callum McGregor on occasion, the 26-year-old’s standing and status has grown even further in the current campaign, having already matched last season’s tally with eight goal involvements to date.

As club legend Chris Sutton has stated, those “forward runs” are a “part of his game under Brendan Rodgers that he has really improved”, having become a real outlet behind the rampaging Kuhn.

A return of four goals and two assists in only ten league outings has perhaps seen Johnston firmly surpass a certain James Tavernier as the division’s leading right-back, with it no surprise that the Canadian continues to attract interest, amid the potential prospect of a bumper new deal.

While any sort of price tag has not been noted, the in-form defender is now said to be worth around €8.5m (£7m), according to Transfermarkt, representing a 100% increase on his initial £3.5m fee.

That rise speaks to the impact he has made in a Celtic shirt thus far, with the combination of himself and Kuhn down the right flank certainly a fruitful – and potentially profitable – one for Rodgers and co. Long may it continue.

Rahul Dravid: We timed our declaration well

India don’t feel they batted on too long after they ended one wicket short of a win

Rahul Dravid: India showed ‘great fighting spirit’

When a side comes as close to winning as India did and the opposition is more than 100 away from their score, it is tempting to look for a few priceless minutes from earlier in the match. The mind immediately goes to India’s last partnership before declaration, which went at a little over three an over for over 20 overs. However, India coach Rahul Dravid said those runs were extremely important to bat New Zealand out of the game. He didn’t feel India had got the timing of the declaration wrong, which left New Zealand 284 to get at under three an over.Dravid was asked if Wriddhiman Saha and Axar Patel could have been more adventurous in that partnership and given India an extra half hour. “I don’t think so,” Dravid said. “That is not my reading of the game. Till half an hour before we declared, we were under pressure. All three results were possible.Watch live cricket on ESPN+ in the US

“To be very honest with you, if we had got out – Wriddhiman Shaha showed great courage and character to be batting with the stiff neck that he had – if we had lost our three wickets quickly and they were chasing 240-250 in approximately 110 overs, then they are looking at 2.2-2.3 runs an over. So no that is not my reading of the game. We needed that partnership.”Dravid went on to suggest they would have approached the final session of day four differently had they not lost half-centurion Shreyas Iyer to the last ball before tea, but then stopped himself. “We lost Shreyas just before tea,” Dravid said. “Then we had that partnership, which was critical for us. From 167 for 7 to get to 230 for 7 was absolutely necessary. If this wicket was turning square and bouncing, and we had both the edges in play, I would have… you know there would have been a different situation.”My reading of the game was not that at all. Even today you walk into the ground, and you know the opposition needs just under three an over. That’s not a lot of runs if a couple of batters get set. Of course, we thought we did it well. We timed it well. We managed to get a wicket yesterday, and we came very close today. We were under pressure as well, people forget that, even 45 minutes before we declared.”Rahul Dravid believes the partnership between Wriddhiman Saha and Axar Patel was vital•BCCI

The biggest deciding factor was the conditions, an unresponsive pitch that took out a couple of modes of dismissals from the game. “Facts of the pitch were it probably was low and slow, probably didn’t have that much bounce, didn’t have turn,” Dravid said. “You probably expect a little bit more of wear and tear on these wickets in Indian conditions over five days. This didn’t seem to have that bite. Generally on days four and five, as a spinner, you can challenge both the edges. The outside edge for the catches, and you can get the lbws by beating the inside edge. Honestly, in this Test the outside edge was virtually ruled out.”Even on the last day, none of the edges carried. I can’t remember a catch close to the wicket. [KS] Bharat [substitute wicketkeeper] took a couple but other than that there was nothing. It sort of felt like there was only one way to get people out, which is lbw and bowled. Which was probably true in the last session.”Related

Dravid lauded his bowlers for bringing India as close as they did despite the pitch. “I think we did a great job in spite of that,” he said. “It was tough. Look we expect it to be tough in Kanpur. Let’s be honest, I have played here before, I know wickets here can be tough, but this was probably even lower and slower than anything I have experienced here.”Usually on day five you should get little more help. The cracks widen up a little bit. I don’t know, maybe it is the winter. I don’t know what it was but it just felt like if you wanted to block and not score runs, it was difficult to get you out. We saw that. We had quality guys who were able to make a game out of this. Otherwise this could have been a dull draw.”

E durante boa parte do enfrentamento a dupla atuou juntas.
