Romano: Club make approach to sign £25m Man City ace who Pep wants to keep

A big European club have made an approach to sign a £25 million Manchester City ace, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Man City transfer news

The January transfer window is normally a quiet month for the Blues, but this time it hasn’t been anything but, as they have already made three signings in the form of Vitor Reis, Abdukodir Khusanov, and Omar Marmoush.

However, the Premier League champions may not be stopping there, as the City Group and Man City are set to hold talks with Sverre Nypan. The 18-year-old is expected to take the next step in his career soon and has flown to Manchester to discuss the project and the idea of joining the club. It is believed that City could sign Nypan and then loan him out to Girona in Spain, a decision that the midfielder is going to take his time on before deciding.

Another player who is on City’s radar is Juventus midfielder Douglas Luiz. The Brazilian is seen as a “stop-gap option” for the Blues, as they try to find a replacement for Rodri.

Luiz joined the Italian giants in the summer but has struggled during his time in Turin, and he could be set for a loan move to the Etihad before the transfer window closes.

Club make approach to sign £25m Man City ace

As the Blues eye possibly one more signing, they could have a decision to make about one of their current players, as transfer expert Romano reports that Bayer Leverkusen have approached Man City to sign James McAtee.

The Bundesliga champions have offered a loan plus an option to buy, as manager Xabi Alonso is a “huge fan” of the midfielder and has been identified as the club’s first choice to replace the injured Martin Terrier.

However, this isn’t an easy deal for Leverkusen to complete, as it’s been previously reported that City could want as much as £25 million to sell McAtee, with it not clear how much the option in the offer is worth.

It has also been claimed that given City have brought in Marmoush, Pep Guardiola would be happy to let the City academy graduate leave, but Romano now reports that the City boss, along with the club, would be reluctant to allow McAtee to leave, as they feel he can become a regular starter.

The 22-year-old, who Guardiola once dubbed “special,” has appeared in 14 games in all competitions this season. He has started just four of those games but recently impressed against Salford City, a game in which he scored a hat trick, and impressed in a cameo against Ipswich Town, where he netted a goal in their 6-0 win.

McAtee has come off the bench in five of their last six games in the Premier League and Champions League, but it is unclear if that is enough for him to turn down a move to Leverkusen, where his minutes could increase.

Yorkshire is expected destination for Shan Masood after Derbyshire exit

County seeks influential figurehead in the wake of racism allegations

Yorkshire are expected to sign Shan Masood, the Pakistan opening batter, after he confirmed that he had turned down Derbyshire’s offer of a new contract and would leave the club at the end of the season.Masood, who is regarded in Derbyshire circles as one of their most influential overseas signings, could also be offered the Yorkshire captaincy following Steven Patterson’s decision to step down as leader of the Championship side at the end of last month and the departure of England’s allrounder, David Willey, who was in charge of the T20 side, to Northamptonshire.Masood is seen as a perfect fit for Yorkshire as they seek to promote an all-inclusive culture in the wake of racism allegations from their former player, Azeem Rafiq, which sparked the biggest crisis in the club’s history and brought charges of bringing the game into disrepute from the ECB after a prolonged investigation. As a multi-format player, whose international days might be drawing to a close, Masood could also be expected to become an important figurehead in minority-ethnic communities as Yorkshire work to build trust across all parts of the county. His considered leadership was a prime factor in Derbyshire’s qualification for the Blast quarter-finals, as well as a more stable season in Division Two of the LV= Championship, but he was called up by Pakistan for a Test tour of Sri Lanka and Derbyshire crashed and burned in their last-eight Blast tie against Somerset at Taunton.Related

'I have moved on with my life': Andrew Gale refuses to defend ECB racism charge

Derbyshire had been in discussions with Masood, 32, regarding an extended contract for several months and despite a significantly improved offer, he has decided to take on potentially a hugely influential role.Derbyshire’s head of cricket, Mickey Arthur, was philosophical about Masood’s departure but nevertheless it is a blow for his efforts to change the county’s reputation as one of the weakest in the country.”Bringing Shan to Derbyshire was my priority when joining the club last winter,” Arthur said. “He’s shown the performances I knew he was capable of in county cricket and we’ve been keen to extend his deal since very early on in the season.”The contract renewal reflected his performances and value to the club, but ultimately we couldn’t match the offer. The other county set their stall out to bring in Shan and while it is of course disappointing to lose a player of his calibre, I and everyone at the club wish him the very best for the future.”We’ve seen a different Derbyshire this year and the group have surpassed people’s expectations. We’re shaking off that underdog tag and teams know when they play us that it’s going to be a competitive game. There’s more to come from this group and we’ll supplement that core with overseas recruitment, the process for which is already underway.”Masood offered optimistic words in return. “Derbyshire is a great club with a very positive outlook and inclusive culture. Under Mickey’s project I see the group challenging for trophies and reaching greater heights in the very near future. It has not been easy making this decision, but I feel this move is the next phase of my life and career.”He is on course to finish the season with more than 2,000 runs across all formats, including a double century against Sussex.Yorkshire explored the possibility earlier in the summer of signing Moeen Ali as another statement signing, although that prospect was always unlikely. Moeen said in June that he would be open to joining Yorkshire for cricketing reasons but “not as a publicity stunt” before making an expected switch from Worcestershire to his first county Warwickshire and his home city of Birmingham where his popularity is evident, not least in his leadership of Birmingham Phoenix in the Hundred.Yorkshire would welcome a similar impact from Masood as they try to reinvigorate a county where membership has fallen to historically low levels and debts remain around £20 million.

Saved by Piroe: Leeds dud just proved why the 49ers need to replace him

Leeds United moved another step closer to Championship promotion last night after claiming their 19th win of the season against Coventry City, coming away from the clash as 2–0 winners.

Goals from Jayden Bogle and Joel Piroe secured all three points for Daniel Farke’s side, extending their current unbeaten run to 14 games across all competitions.

Whilst there are still 15 games to go between now and the end of the campaign, the win certainly puts the Whites in pole position for a return to England’s top flight, now five points clear of third place, albeit with Sheffield United having a game in hand.

Leeds United manager DanielFarkeapplauds fans

The German boss has been massively aided by his talent squad in recent weeks, with the frontline constantly starring, as seen by their incredible goalscoring tally, which has seen them score 13 times more than any other side in the division.

Last night was no different, with numerous players having an evening to remember within the final third at the CBS Arena against Frank Lampard’s men.

Leeds’ star performers in the win over Coventry

Dutch striker Piroe has had his fair share of doubters during his time at Elland Road, but it’s safe to say he’s been one of the biggest contributors in front of goal for Leeds in 2024/25.

His effort in the first half last night was his 13th league goal of the campaign, cementing his place at the top of the club’s goalscoring charts, registering nearly more than double second place Dan James.

Piroe’s effort was just one example of the quality he can possess within the final third when the ball ends up at his feet, hopefully playing a pivotal role in the quest for promotion over the coming weeks.

Full-back Bogle may primarily be a defensive option in Farke’s side, but his goal last night was his fourth of the season, highlighting the threat he carries when venturing forward.

The £5m fee forked out for his signature over the summer now appears to be a bargain for the right-back who’s undoubtedly been the best player in his position across the entire division, especially considering his attacking threat along with 17 clean sheets.

However, the same can’t be said for one player following his outing last night, once again proving how hot and cold he can be in the white of Leeds under Farke.

The Leeds player who showcased why signings were needed

Whilst last night was a largely positive display from the Whites against the Sky Blues, numerous players struggled to make a huge impact, potentially putting their starting roles at risk.

One player who fell into such a category was attacking midfielder Brenden Aaronson, who looked lost through certain parts of the game, unable to make the positive impression he would’ve wanted.

The American, who earns £45k-per-week, started his 29th game of 2024/25 last night, but was unable to add to his tally of eight goals and two assists, looking ineffective and wasteful when opportunities in the final third.

He could only muster 44 touches throughout the victory, the same tally as goalkeeper Illan Meslier, highlighting the lack of impact he had on affairs despite the victory.

Aaronson also lost possession 11 times throughout the contest, whilst also failing to complete any of his attempted crosses, further showcasing his wasteful nature when the ball fell his way.

There’s no denying that the 24-year-old is a talented player, as seen from his goal and assist tally, but he frequently goes missing in certain matches, unable to provide the consistency that is needed in a promotion battle.

The recent closure of the January window means Farke won’t be able to strengthen his side between now and the end of the season, subsequently having to stick with the likes of Aaronson to get the job done.

Further additions to such an area would’ve undoubtedly aided their chances of ending their two-year exile from the Premier League, potentially being a mistake in failing to make a single signing during the window – hopefully, one that doesn’t come back to bite them.

Any player that arrived in Yorkshire could have provided needed competition to the American, allowing him to up his game, or even seeing another player take over in the role adding a different dimension to the potent attack.

However, it will remain a case of what could’ve been for the German boss, but hopefully, the failure to land any new faces doesn’t prove to be a hindrance in their quest for promotion in the coming months.

As bad as Aaronson: Leeds must drop star who had fewer touches than Meslier

Daniel Farke should drop the Leeds United forward from the starting line-up this weekend.

Colin Ackermann delays the inevitable as Middlesex inch into title contention

Eighty-run victory keeps pressure on Nottinghamshire as Division Two climax looms

Having had Leicestershire on the ropes at 13 for four at Thursday’s close, Middlesex took rather longer than anticipated to finish the job, but duly completed an 80-run victory to set up an unexpectedly exciting finale to the Division Two campaign in the LV= Insurance County Championship, with still three contenders for the two promotion places.Toby Roland-Jones finished with four for 50 and seven wickets in the match as Leicestershire were bowled out for 194, Colin Ackermann mounting the most significant show of resistance, batting almost four hours for his 80.Tailenders Chris Wright and Michael Finan had some fun at the end, thrashing 61 runs in just over 11 overs for the final wicket.Nottinghamshire had looked to have the Division Two title in the bag after seven wins, but after their humbling defeat by Worcestershire at New Road earlier this week, Middlesex’s victory makes a substantial hole in their cushion at the top of the table. It means the leaders will begin the last round of fixtures on Monday with their advantage cut to just nine points, with Middlesex in second place, although themselves looking nervously over their shoulders at Glamorgan, whose win against Derbyshire in Cardiff puts them only nine points further back in third spot.Nottinghamshire’s final opponents are Durham at Trent Bridge, while Middlesex themselves travel to Worcester. Glamorgan take on Sussex at Hove.Leicestershire might have been in further disarray on the third evening had bad light not allowed them to return to the haven of the dressing room earlier than scheduled. They lasted just over half an hour on the final morning before losing their fifth wicket, Harry Swindells walking even before the umpire’s finger was raised after a swinging delivery from Roland-Jones hit him squarely in front.Tom Scriven, the former England Under-19s all-rounder, played nicely alongside Ackermann as the pair added 34 for the sixth wicket, but the introduction of Luke Hollman’s leg spin brought an immediate dividend, as it had twice previously in the match.Scriven was his victim this time, popping up a bat-pad catch to short leg as he sought to flick one away. When Barnes fell without scoring, beaten for pace when lbw to Ethan Bamber, Leicestershire were 70 for seven.Yet with the obdurate Callum Parkinson now at the other end, Middlesex were frustrated for more than an hour and a half before they could claim the eighth wicket, Leicestershire adding 65 runs in the process, with Ackermann surviving a chance to wicketkeeper John Simpson on 51.The breakthrough came via an unexpected route. Sam Robson succeeded where Hollman had been unable to make further inroads, the off-spinner deploying a leg break to have Ackermann leg before on the sweep. One wicket brought another as Parkinson fell in the next over, Tim Murtagh pushing one through to hit the front pad in line.Yet Middlesex were made to wait for a little longer before their celebrations could begin, Wright and Finan taking the opportunity to swing the bat under no pressure, the former finishing 36 not out after Finan holed out to deep midwicket off Robson to end the contest at 3.15pm.Leicestershire, deeply rooted at the bottom of the table, have one more chance – away to Derbyshire – to avoid another full season without a Championship win, a fate that befell them three times in the last decade.

Uh oh: Rangers playmaker Clement wants to keep now moving towards Ibrox exit

Rangers have been handed a blow on the transfer front as one star looks to be heading towards the exit doors at Ibrox, despite Philippe Clement wanting to keep him at the club.

Rangers struggling this season

It has been a tough season for Rangers, and Clement’s side look likely to end the campaign without any silverware as things stand. A dreadful start to the Scottish Premiership campaign left them well adrift of Celtic and they remain 13 points behind their Glasgow rivals despite an impressive win the last time that the two sides met.

Meanwhile, a shock upset at the hands of Scottish second tier side Queen’s Park knocked them out of the Scottish Cup in the fourth round, and they were beaten on penalties by Celtic in the Scottish League Cup final earlier in the campaign, leaving domestic silverware off the table.

"Money talks" – Rangers could sell star "entertainer" for £8m, says pundit

He was wanted in January.

ByCharlie Smith Feb 14, 2025

They have been impressive so far in the Europa League, sealing automatic qualification to the next round of the competition thanks to a fine run of form that saw them beat OGC Nice and draw with Tottenham.

But with the likes of Spurs, Manchester United, Eintracht Frankfurt and Lyon all still in the competition, Rangers are rank outsiders to lift the trophy at the end of the campaign.

Clement’s own future has been questioned and he was booed by his own fans in the wake of the embarrassing cup exit. However, he could not be the only one set to leave Ibrox before the new campaign.

Rangers star closing in on exit

Now, a fresh report from Football Insider has claimed that Rangers ace Ianis Hagi is edging ever closer to an exit from Ibrox despite Clement wanting to keep hold of him. Missing the first half of the season thanks to a contract dispute, Hagi has become increasingly important to the boss, grabbing three goals and five assists in the top flight so far this season.

It led to him being dubbed “sensational” by Romanian legend Ilie Dumitrescu.

“Ianis Hagi had a sensational match. He hit a very good shot that managed to surprise a goalkeeper as excellent as Kasper Schmeichel. But he was superb for the whole game,” he explained.

And speaking in January, Clement admitted he wanted to keep hold of the Romanian: “I don’t have a clue what numbers Ianis has in mind, or the club. So there will be discussions between them. Of course, I’m happy with how Ianis is performing.”

Now though, it seems as though Hagi’s future lies away from Ibrox, with the report claiming that multiple clubs are now “prepared to make offers” and “there are now concerns that he could leave for free” due to impending offers that Rangers do not feel they can match.

It is claimed that both Torino and Fenerbahçe have registered an interest in the Romanian, but should he be available for free then there would undoubtedly be a scramble for his services.

Now, there’s a formal longer-term deal in place.Given the political situation in Afghanistan, it has remained a no-go zone for international teams. The situation escalated with the Taliban takeover in August 2021. Several ACB staff were among those who fled the country in the immediate aftermath, and thereafter getting visas for players based in Afghanistan to play abroad became a bigger challenge.
