Not just Nunez: Liverpool star who lost the ball every 3 mins let Slot down

Liverpool huffed and puffed but they couldn’t breach Paris Saint-Germain’s defensive barrier, and Arne Slot will not be tasting European glory in his first season at the Anfield helm.

It’s the first major blot on Slot’s copybook. He succeeded Jurgen Klopp last summer and has steered Liverpool to within touching distance of the Premier League title, with Wembley also looming large this weekend.

Liverpool striker Diogo Jota

But despite Harvey Elliott’s incredible late winner at the Parc des Princes last week, defying the Ligue 1 giant’s dominance, Liverpool couldn’t find a way through at Anfield and are out of the Champions League in the last 16.

It’s hard to pin down any one thing on the crushing defeat, but Liverpool’s frontline flattered to deceive on the continental stage and will have given Slot and sporting director Richard Hughes plenty of food for thought.

Liverpool's forwards misfire in Europe

Mohamed Salah was kept relatively quiet once again, but he did look to make things happen and proved a threat with some neat tricks, close misses and dangerous passing.

Mohamed Salah for Liverpool

Likewise, Luis Diaz ran to and fro, to and fro, stretching the French opposition but to little avail. The men in the middle, however, typified Liverpool’s problems, with Diogo Jota shackled and Darwin Nunez out of sync and ineffective in his stead, replacing the Portugal international after 73 minutes.

The pointers suggest FSG are going to move for a high-class central striker this summer, and you can see why.

Neither Jota nor Nunez provided anything meaningful, with the latter missing his spot-kick and heightening Curtis Jones’ nerve, for the midfielder subsequently hit a tame strike at the unbeatable Gigi Donnarumma.

However, the blame cannot lie solely on the strikers, as the home side still found some more errors leaked into their game and this was showcased by one Liverpool star who raised his levels after recent months but still failed to produce the desired effect.

Liverpool star proved he's reaching the end

While questions linger regarding the futures of Liverpool’s non-committal contract rogues, there are a few more who might be reaching the end of their Anfield journeys.

Andy Robertson is one of them, with the 31-year-old left-back flattering to deceive for large parts of the current campaign despite Liverpool’s immense season.

Andy Robertson in action for Liverpool

As per Sofacore, he lost the ball 24 times during his 90 minutes on the field as he sought to make things happen for the Reds but struggled to hit the kind of consistency of years past, finding his target with one of ten attempted crosses.

Moreover, the Scotland skipper was exposed during the build-up to Ousmane Dembele’s opening goal, a moment that proved crucial in the grand scheme of the evening.

He did show plenty of spirit thereafter and wasn’t run ragged by PSG’s devastating and interchangeable frontline, but Robertson simply isn’t what he used to be, with wayward passing, questionable decision-making and unconvincing positioning underpinning the issues in this Liverpool squad.

And there are issues. However, let’s all take a moment. Liverpool now turn toward a Carabao Cup final at Wembley on Sunday and remain 15 points clear at the top of the Premier League. Falling in Europe doesn’t change that.

Liverpool managerArneSlotbefore the match

But this time next week, the Merseysiders will have one road to travel down for the final few months of the campaign, and next season, Slot will hope to exercise Champions League demons to be sure.

Hopefully, Robertson’s still at the club, he is a legend after all. But Liverpool need younger and more robust improvements to take them to the next level, and this was illustrated against a fearsome PSG side, who advance to the last eight.

Rohit leads strong reply after Jadeja five-for

India take day one honours after Australia bowled out for 177 in 63.5 overs

Ravindra Jadeja is congratulated on his five-wicket haul•Getty Images

Ravindra Jadeja made a triumphant return to international cricket with his 11th five-wicket haul to help bowl Australia out for 177 on the first day of the much-anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Jadeja took the wickets of the three batters who looked assured: Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith and Peter Handscomb. Rohit Sharma led India’s reply with 56 off 69, taking India to within 100 of Australia’s score with nine wickets still standing. On a helpful surface, Jadeja bowled with accuracy and subtle changes of pace and trajectory. He kept bowling on a length or slightly fuller, but slowed down the odd ball. R Ashwin, who tried much more, contributed with three. The rhythms of Australia’s innings were typical of a turning track. Scoring and dismissals happened in spurts as Australia looked to cash in on every scoring opportunity, and India were a little impatient with their bowlers knowing the premium on runs on such tracks.Related

The underappreciated genius of Ravindra Jadeja

Head-less Australia's horses-for-courses approach backfires

The first spurt of wickets, though, came without any build-up. Australia had won the crucial toss on a pitch where batting last will be treacherous, but there was just enough in it for the fast bowlers for the excellent Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Shami to remove the openers for 1 run each.Siraj started off with a beautiful outswinger – the inswinger to left-hand batters – to pitch on leg and move just enough to beat the inside edge of Usman Khawaja and still stay on leg stump. Shami went round the wicket to seam the ball just enough to beat David Warner so comprehensively that he would have been out lbw had the ball not ricocheted to send the off stump cartwheeling.Labuschagne and Smith managed to hit four boundaries in the next three overs, which brought about a double change: Jadeja and Axar Patel. The ball turned immediately for Jadeja, and India brought back control through a combination of pace and spin. The second half of the first session was bowled by spinners, but Labuschagne and Smith were equal to the task. They went into lunch having added 74 largely assured runs.Post lunch, though, the ball turned more, and Jadeja ran through the middle order. The one to get Labuschagne was perhaps the best delivery. It was roundarm, dipped on Labuschagne, dragged his back foot out, and then turned away with a puff of dust to leave him stranded. Debutant KS Bharat had his first official dismissal after having substituted for Wriddhiman Saha last year.Matt Renshaw, arguably keeping out Travis Head who doesn’t have a good record in Asia or against spin, fell first ball as he was caught on the crease and Jadeja turned it past his inside edge from round the wicket.Rohit Sharma brings up fifty•Associated Press

Then came a spurt of runs with Smith taking on Axar for three boundaries in an over, prompting an immediate change and more runs for Handscomb against R Ashwin. Jadeja, though, dragged them back again with a string of deliveries that turned away big. Smith got into the habit of defending for big turn but one turned only slightly to hold its line in front of off and beat his inside edge to knock back the off stump.Again came a spurt of runs through Alex Carey’s reverse-sweeps and sweeps. India responded immediately by taking out catching men in front of the wicket to block both the sweeps. Eventually Carey played on a reverse-sweep to give Ashwin his 450th Test wicket and end a 53-run partnership in just 11.1 overs..Ashwin then followed it up with some classic Ashwin bowling to draw Pat Cummins’ outside edge. He dragged him wide, straight, forward, back before sliding one quicker one in.Both Jadeja and Ashwin had a shot at a five-for with three wickets, a sight missed for a while as Jadeja last played a home Test in March. The friendly competition was won by Jadeja as he trapped debutant offspinner Todd Murphy and Peter Handscomb lbw either side of the tea break. Handscomb had looked good until he started to farm the strike and played a low-percentage sweep to a full ball. Ashwin finished the innings off with a carrom ball to Scott Boland. Labuschagne’s 49 remained the highest score.Australia came back on the field with hardly any room for error with the ball left. They hardly had any runs to attack with, and needed everything to go right for their four-man attack. It was an unfortunate time for their best bowler and captain Cummins to have perhaps his worst day with the ball. He frequently overpitched and strayed on the pads, and Rohit was just ruthless. Three boundaries came in the first over, one between slip and gully and two lovely flicks into the leg side. Just when it looked like Cummins had got the control back with a maiden to KL Rahul, his second over contained two leg-side offerings for Rohit. Cummins’ figures read 3-1-23-0, and India were 26 for 0 in five overs.Boland provided better control, but Nathan Lyon and Murphy, two similar offspinners, couldn’t extract as much purchase from the pitch as the India spinners did. Whenever they strung together good balls, Rohit was quick with a calculated risk. He stepped out to hit Lyon back over his head for a six in the 14th over and cover-drove every full ball. With a paddle sweep in the 22nd over, Rohit got to his fifty in just 66 balls, and celebrated it with a regal cover-drive next ball. He had cashed in on early wickets, and then had worn out the spinners to draw the errors.Just before stumps, though, Murphy drew some consolation for Australia, turning the ball from the rough from round the wicket, and getting on the board in Test cricket with KL Rahul’s wicket.

Chelsea vying to sign "fearless" £35m attacker who's been likened to Palmer

Chelsea have now set their sights on a “fearless” attacker who’s been likened to Cole Palmer, but there will be competition for his signature from their Premier League rivals, according to a report.

Palmer enjoying another impressive campaign

Although Palmer’s form has gone downhill a little recently, and there is doubt over whether the attacking midfielder will match his goal tally from last season, he is enjoying another impressive campaign with the Blues.

The England international has 14 goals and six assists to his name in the Premier League, playing a key role in Enzo Maresca’s side’s push for the Champions League places.

That said, there could be a case made that there is an overreliance on the 22-year-old, given that no other player has reached double figures for goals yet this season, while he has also recorded the joint-highest number of assists.

Wow: Chelsea now preparing stunning £151m bid to sign two Real Madrid stars

The Blues have set their sights on two attackers who currently play for the reigning champions of Europe.

ByDominic Lund Mar 18, 2025

As such, Maresca may be keen to bring in attacking options in a similar mould to the talisman, and a report from Spain has now revealed Chelsea have set their sights on River Plate’s Franco Mastantuono.

Mastantuono, who has a £35m release clause included in his contact with the Argentinian side, is now attracting the attention of a number of top clubs, with Arsenal and Liverpool in the race for his signature, while Real Madrid also hold an interest.

Franco Mastantuono for River Plate

The Blues feel the 17-year-old playmaker has the potential to be a part of their long-term project, given his ability in possession of the ball, alongside his vision, and they are closely monitoring his progress ahead of a potential swoop.

None of the other interested parties have submitted a formal offer thus far, but River Plate are well aware the starlet will soon be on his way to Europe.

"Fearless" Mastantuono likened to Palmer

Freelance scout Ben Mattinson clearly rates the youngster very highly, having compared his playing style to Palmer’s.

Although the Argentinian is still very young, Mattinson has also lavished him with praise for his maturity and leadership, while branding him “fearless”, and he is already making a name for himself at River Plate.

The teenager has 46 first-team appearances to his name, during which time he has picked up four goals and four assists, indicating that he could be a future star.

As such, it is exciting news that Chelsea are in the race for Mastantuono, and while £35m seems like a lot for a 17-year-old, there is plenty of evidence that it won’t be long before he is capable of pushing for a starting spot.

James Anderson groin strain raises England Ashes fears

Veteran seamer to be assessed ahead of Ireland Test after limping out of Lancashire fixture

James Anderson suffered a groin injury while playing for Lancashire•Getty Images

James Anderson is a doubt for England’s first Test of the summer, starting against Ireland on June 1, after confirmation that he had suffered a “minor strain to his right groin” while playing for Lancashire.Anderson did not participate any further in the County Championship game against Somerset at Old Trafford after returning figures of 14-7-16-2 on day one. His absence was met with no official update of an injury until the ECB belatedly released the news on Sunday evening, less than three weeks before the game at Lord’s.England are expected to announce their squad to face Ireland next week, with Anderson, who went for a scan on Saturday, set to be “assessed nearer the time”, according to an ECB statement. With the Ashes beginning in little over a month, and Lancashire playing no first-class cricket between now and June 11, Anderson could struggle to prove his fitness ahead of the first Test of the series at Edgbaston. The injury will spark memories of Australia’s visit in 2019, when Anderson played the opener but bowled just four overs before suffering a series-ending calf strain. The 40-year-old, who is the third-highest wicket-taker in Test history, has played four out of five matches for Lancashire so far this season, claiming 16 wickets at 20.30.England are already likely to be without Jofra Archer for the start of the Ashes, after the fast bowler returned early from the IPL to continue rehabilitation on a longstanding elbow problem, while Olly Stone is expected to be out for a number of weeks due to a hamstring strain sustained while playing for Nottinghamshire.

Arteta loves him: Arsenal now join race to sign "revelation" £10m defender

Arsenal have now joined the race to sign a full-back, with Mikel Arteta of the belief he could be a perfect addition to the squad, according to a report.

Gunners eyeing new full-backs

Myles Lewis-Skelly has been a breakout star for the Gunners this season, with the 18-year-old’s impressive performances at left-back earning him a first England call-up, and he wasted no time scoring his first Three Lions goal.

However, there have been suggestions Arteta is planning to move Lewis-Skelly further forward on a long-term basis, which means there may be room for some additions at full-back this summer.

Arteta’s side have enquired about the possibility of a deal for Dinamo Tbilisi left-back Saba Kharebashvili, while they are also very keen on signing versatile Ajax defender Jorrel Hato, who is able to play at both centre-back and left-back.

Same agent as Havertz: Arsenal now racing to sign "world-class" £54m winger

The Gunners are chasing a forward who’s now unhappy at his current club.

ByDominic Lund Mar 24, 2025

Not only is Arteta seeking reinforcements at left-back, but a new report from Spain has detailed a new right-back could also be of interest this summer, with the manager believed to be a big fan of Osasuna’s Jesus Areso.

The Arsenal boss believed Areso would slot into his side perfectly, given his speed and stamina, and an official move could be launched over the next few months.

FC Barcelona's Robert Lewandowski in action with Osasuna'sJesusAreso

A number of unnamed clubs have the right-back in their sights, having been impressed by his performances in La Liga this season, and the Gunners seem to be particularly keen, having decided signing a new right-back will be a priority this summer.

Areso has been a "revelation" for Osasuna

Members of the Spanish media have lavished the Osasuna defender with praise, describing him as a “revelation” for his performances over the past year, while also claiming he is a “complete” full-back, who is capable of contributing in attack.

The 25-year-old’s attacking prowess was on display last season, winning the La Liga Goal of the Season award for a remarkable effort from near the byline.

Not only that, but the Spaniard ranks in the 88th percentile for assists per 90 over the past year, when compared to other full-backs, showcasing his quality on the front foot.

A release clause of just €12m (£10m) sweetens the deal even more, given that the former Athletic Bilbao man would be a very affordable option for Arsenal this summer, and his performances in La Liga indicate he could be a solid signing.

That said, given that Ben White has now returned from injury, while Arteta also has Timber at his disposal, a new right-back should not be a priority this summer, and signing an out-and-out striker could give them a better chance of winning the Premier League title.
