'It was a massive moment' – Lyon on Smith's catch to dismiss Pujara

Incredible grab low to the ground at leg slip helped Australia stay in control in Indore

Andrew McGlashan02-Mar-20232:04

Tait: Lyon has got his line and length perfect in this Test

There is no one Nathan Lyon would rather have stood at slip to him than Steven Smith after Australia’s stand-in captain pulled off a spectacular catch to remove Cheteshwar Pujara and leave the visitors in a position where they can be confident of victory in Indore. As Australia, and mostly Lyon, worked their way through India on the second afternoon, Pujara was standing in their way and threatening to engineer a target that would give India’s spinners a realistic chance. It is unlikely 76 will be made easily on the third day, but it’s precious little for even R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja to work with.Related

Lyon spins India out again; Australia need 76 to win

Stats – Lyon trumps Kumble, and India's rare batting slump

With Pujara defying all the tactics Australia threw at him, including a leg-side heavy 7-2 field that restricted his scoring and appeared to be frustrating Rohit Sharma in the dressing room, he was eventually persuaded into flicking at a delivery outside leg stump.Smith showed incredible reflexes to dive low to his right and pluck one of most astonishing catches of his 95-Test career, in a series where he has spilled a few that he would be expected to take.”It was massive,” Lyon said. “To be honest with you, and this is no disrespect to anyone else in the team, but I don’t think anyone else is catching it. That’s just me bowling from one end and looking up and seeing Steve Smith at slip or leg slip and having that confidence as a bowler.”Yes, he has dropped a couple here and there, but I wouldn’t trade him for anyone. It shows the quality of cricketer he is that we see at training the different methods he is coming up with to try and get better and try and improve. This is someone who has played 95 Test matches.Nathan Lyon: This is no disrespect to anyone else in the team, but I don’t think anyone else is catching it•Getty Images

“Hats off to Smithy, he did all the work, I’m not surprised but it was a massive moment to finish off the day strongly.”Smith has enjoyed an excellent game as captain having taken on the role in the absence of Pat Cummins. He has been proactive and innovative in his field settings and has been willing to rotate his spinners even when one has enjoyed some success. On the second day he also brought back Mitchell Starc at a vital stage after tea when Shreyas Iyer was threatening to cut loose and it created the breakthrough courtesy of another stunning catch from Usman Khawaja at midwicket.”I have obviously played a lot with Smithy throughout my career, so we are very good mates on and off the field and are able to have some very good cricket conversations,” Lyon said. “He is one of the best batters in the world, especially over the last decade, the way his brain works with cricket tactics provides me with good conversations.”But saying that I thought Pat skippered the game really well last week. We had really good plans under both of them and that’s where Australian cricket is in good hands with one of the best bowlers in the world and one of the best batters in the world being our two leaders.”Khawaja, who is Australia’s leading run-scorer, allayed concerns over his fitness with the acrobatic take to remove Iyer after he had spent the initial stages of India’s second innings off the field nursing a back complaint.”It was an unbelievable catch,” Lyon said. “Uzzy’s been known to do that. He took a pretty spectacular one in Adelaide a few years ago to dismiss Virat. A big moment in the game so hats off to him.”

Wyatt's 'terrifying experience' on cable car going up Table mountain

Power issues caused the cable car she was on ‘to drop a little bit and swing’

Moonda: Big crowd expected at Newlands for Women’s World Cup semi-final

England are targeting a calm performance in their Women’s T20 World Cup semi-final against South Africa on Friday, but opening batter Danni Wyatt’s nerves were frayed in the lead-up during an incident involving a cable car she was travelling in down Table Mountain.Wyatt revealed during a pre-match press conference in Cape Town on Thursday that a cable car she was travelling in while descending the peak on Wednesday afternoon “decided to drop a little bit and swung”.Related

Nat Sciver-Brunt: England wanted to 'show everyone what we're about'

Members of the England Women’s team were queuing for the cable cars, which transport visitors up and down the 1,086m mountain, when they saw one stop on its way up, which Wyatt said had made her “nervous”. It was shortly after Wyatt and Sophia Dunkley had boarded a car to descend that the incident occurred, stemming from a technical problem with a hydraulic back-up motor used to operate the cars when power to the usual electric motor is cut during load shedding. South Africa has been increasingly hit by load shedding, where the power supply is rationed to different areas throughout the day and night because demand outweighs capacity.”Going back down yesterday, there were a few technical issues that made me very nervous before we boarded the cable car,” Wyatt said. “And then it decided to drop a little bit and swung. It was a very terrifying experience. I don’t think I’ll be going up that mountain again anytime soon.”Wyatt said it wasn’t her first visit to Table Mountain, having been there “about seven years ago” but the incident on her latest visit had put her off returning.Danni Wyatt: ‘I’m not going on that cable car ever again. It’s the load shedding, once the electricity goes, that’s it.’•ICC/Getty Images

“I think that’ll be the last time,” she said. “I’m not going on that cable car ever again. It’s the load shedding, once the electricity goes, that’s it. Staying away from it. I’ll take the stairs.”Asked if she screamed, Wyatt replied: “Yes, I did. I think everyone did. Well, literally everyone. A lot of people were shaking.”Wahida Parker, managing director of the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company, said: “Table Mountain Cableway Company uses a hydraulic back-up motor during load shedding that replaces the electric motor that operates our cars and their movement. This motor experienced a technical problem on Wednesday, which caused our cars to get stuck on the line.”We adopted two approaches simultaneously to resolve the problem. Our technicians worked to find the fault so that we could get moving as soon as possible, while at the same time, we contacted the City of Cape Town to ask that the power to our area be restored so that we could bring our passengers down safely and quickly.”We pride ourselves on providing visitors with a positive and enjoyable experience, and what happened on Wednesday is not what we aim for. We sincerely regret the experience that passengers had who were stuck in our cars. We are happy to confirm that all the passengers safely reached the upper and lower stations.”

Lees and Robinson heap more misery on coach-less Leicestershire

Durham pile on the runs as Leicestershire’s attack struggles to get a tune out of the Kookaburra ball

ECB Reporters Network25-Jun-2023

Ollie Robinson registered his third century of the season•Getty Images

Centuries from Ollie Robinson and Alex Lees put Division Two leaders Durham in a commanding position at 422 for four after the opening day of their LV= Insurance County Championship clash with third-placed Leicestershire.Robinson, who finished unbeaten on 113, posted the third century of what is turning into an outstanding season following his move from Kent last winter, sharing an unbroken 221-run fifth-wicket stand with Graham Clark, who is 15 away from a hundred of his own.Earlier, openers Lees and Michael Jones had laid the foundations with a first-wicket stand of 145 before Leicestershire, currently without a head coach after the shock announcement that Paul Nixon had been placed on “gardening leave”, were able to make any inroads with the Kookaburra ball.Wicketkeeper Robinson, who was completing back-to-back centuries after his second-inning 102 against Glamorgan earlier this month, moved from fifty to 100 in just 40 balls as a tiring home bowling attack was made to suffer on a flat pitch.Despite last week’s revelation that they would be playing for different counties next season, former captains Callum Parkinson and Colin Ackermann and veteran fast bowler Chris Wright were all selected by Leicestershire, even though the first-named pair will be wearing Durham colours next year.Indeed, Parkinson and Ackermann wrote what will be a curious footnote to the day’s play by combining to dismiss Lees, simultaneously offering their new side evidence of their ability while striking an important blow for their current one.Having won the toss and invited Leicestershire’s bowlers to explore the Kookaburra experiment, Durham could only have been more satisfied with the opening session had Lees and Jones been still together at lunch. As it was, they shared Durham’s best opening partnership of this season, before Jones, already with 14 fours and a six to his name and looking on course for a second century of the campaign, mistimed a ball from Ed Barnes that he flicked tamely to short mid-wicket, where Ackermann took a good catch. The pitch had a reasonable covering of grass, particularly on a full length, yet with a short boundary to one side Lees and Jones flew out of the traps with such purpose that, at 66 without loss after eight overs, spectators might have had pause to wonder if they were watching T20 rather than a four-day game.To their credit, by lunch a home attack lacking the injured Josh Hull and teenage leg spinner Rehan Ahmed – on England duty – had managed to drag the rate back to a more respectable three runs per over, with Jones the only casualty as Durham lunched on 150 for one. Parkinson’s left-arm spin was summoned as early as the eighth over, although the pitch would never offer him much help.Having snared the wicket of Jones just before lunch, Leicestershire made a second breakthrough soon afterwards, seamer Tom Scriven finding the edge as Durham skipper Scott Borthwick prodded at one outside off stump.Indeed, the middle session was a better one for the home side, who began the round just a point behind second-placed Sussex. At tea, they had Durham 263 for four, still well placed but 113 for three in the session. Sussex-bound Wright, playing in his 50th first-class match for Leicestershire, took his 160th wicket in that time, reacting quickly to grab a return catch in his follow-through as David Bedingham’s defensive push popped up.And Parkinson, who had bowled eight overs without success in the morning, dismissed Lees towards the end of his second spell. The Durham left-hander ultimately reached for a ball that turned just enough to find the edge, Ackermann taking the catch low down at slip.In energy-sapping conditions, the final session was hard work for the bowlers; Clark hitting Ackermann’s off-spin for three consecutive fours before a fourth took him to a 70-ball half-century, 24-year-old Robinson completing his from 103 deliveries just before the second new ball became available.Leicestershire took it, but the change served only to increase the speed at which the ball flew off the bat, seven of the 11 boundaries in Robinson’s hundred coming in the space of eight overs with the new Kookaburra, the right-hander driving and cutting Barnes for back-to-back boundaries to reach the milestone.

Former Pakistan captain Javeria Khan has retired from international cricket, bringing the curtain down on a career of just under 16 years at the highest level. She bows out after playing 228 white-ball matches for Pakistan and scoring 4903 runs across the two formats.”There was joy and sorrow, but above all a sense of great pride that kept me going for 15 years,” Javeria, 35, wrote in a social media post. “The privilege of wearing Pakistan’s jersey was way bigger than the odds that struck through my cricketing journey. I am blessed to have lived my life doing what I loved doing the most and will continue to do so.”Now when I look back, it gives me great satisfaction to see that the path that my friends and I chose to walk on was least trodden when I started playing professionally but is now open for so many girls in Pakistan.”Related

Javeria made her ODI debut in 2008 and played the ODI World Cups in 2009, 2013 and 2017. She also played just the one game – against India in Mount Maunganui – in the 2022 edition after going through a low phase form-wise. She was also out of Pakistan’s T20I side for 15 months before making a comeback in November 2022, and then played the T20 World Cup in 2023, her last outing for Pakistan. She played all the previous editions of the competition, too.”Things change, scripts change and new paths beckon,” Javeria wrote. “There is a time for everything, and now I believe is the best time to call it a day and announce my retirement. However, I’ll be available to play league cricket. I will always be grateful to Pakistan for letting me hold Pakistan’s flag globally.”Javeria led Pakistan in 16 T20Is – including at the T20 World Cup in 2018 and two matches of the 2020 edition when Bismah Maroof was injured. She also captained 17 times in ODIs and finished second in the list of highest run-scorers for Pakistan in both the white-ball formats.”On behalf of the PCB and all cricket fans, I extend heartfelt gratitude to Javeria Khan for her invaluable contributions to women’s cricket in Pakistan,” Tania Mallick, PCB’s head of women’s cricket, said in a statement. “Her glittering records with the bat speak for themselves and I am confident that her illustrious career will inspire many girls in the country to not just take up this sport but also excel at it across many years.”

Joe Clarke, Will Young compile 370 unbroken runs to turn tables on Somerset

Third-wicket pair break 121-year record to give Nottinghamshire unlikely chance on final day

Joe Clarke and Will Young broke a Nottinghamshire record stretching back 121 years with an unbroken third-wicket stand of 370 to transform the Vitality County Championship match against Somerset at Taunton. The pair batted for all but ten minutes of the third day, coming together with their side 48 for two in their second innings, trailing by 213, and guiding them to 418 for two at the close, a lead of 157.Clarke hit an undefeated 209, while Young contributed 156 not out. Their combined efforts bettered those of the uncle and nephew partnership of Billy and John Gunn, who put together a third-wicket stand of 367 against Leicestershire at Trent Bridge back in 1903.By stumps, the pair had been together for two minutes short of six hours without either giving a chance. It was memorable display of concentration and application, which spelled total frustration for the Somerset bowlers.Notts began the day looking to save the game from a seemingly daunting position. There was no indication of batting dominance to come when Haseeb Hameed was bowled through the gate by Craig Overton for 20 with only ten runs added to leave them 48 for two.Clarke walked out to join Young with hundreds against Worcestershire and Essex already to his name this season. From a watchful start, the pair grew in stature to such an extent that a very occasional play-and-miss was all that offered encouragement to the bowlers.Mostly, the ball met the centre of the bat as Clarke and Young mixed watchful defence with sound shot selection, choosing the right deliveries to attack.By lunch, their stand was worth 92, Clarke having reached an 88-ball half-century and Young unbeaten on 41. But at 140 for two, Notts were still 121 adrift and there was plenty more hard work ahead. The afternoon session proved totally sterile for Somerset as their bowlers found scant assistance for seam or spin from the flattest of third-day pitches. Young went to fifty off 135 balls and Clarke brought up his ton off 136 deliveries, with 12 fours and a six, before celebrating with a glorious straight-driven boundary off Overton. When the partnership went past 180 it beat the previous highest third-wicket stand for Notts against Somerset, compiled by Mike Harris and Sir Garfield Sobers at Trent Bridge in 1974.Not content with that, Clarke and Young had increased it to 233 by tea, which was taken at 281 for two, with their side now 20 ahead. Somerset’s last hope was the second new ball, due two overs after the interval. It was taken at 291 for two, but made no difference as the Notts pair continued to grind the bowlers into the dust in bright sunshine. Young went to his century with a superb square-driven four off Migael Pretorius, his 11th boundary in a then 234-ball knock.Soon the partnership was worth 300. A six by Young off the disappointing Shoaib Bashir piled on the misery for Somerset before Clarke scampered a single off Lewis Goldsworthy to bring up his double hundred off 284 balls, with 25 fours and a six.It continued to be a no-contest between bat and ball as the Notts lead increased with every over. Somerset skipper Lewis Gregory shuffled his attack, giving overs to Goldsworthy, Matt Renshaw and Tom Lammonby as well as his normal bowlers without any hint of success. The record was broken in the final over when Young pulled a two off Pretorius. A few moments later the Notts pair walked off to warm applause from the Somerset team and the crowd, Clarke having faced 303 balls and Young 304. They had been together since the third over of the day.

He's like Neymar: Man City eye move to sign "fast" star with £850m clause

In what would be one of the most impressive deals in Premier League history, Manchester City are now reportedly eyeing the chance to sign a young star who’s worth over £200m.

Man City planning summer overhaul

Following their worst season yet under Pep Guardiola, Manchester City look destined to be the club to watch in the Premier League when the transfer window swings open. The likes of Bernardo Silva and Ederson could yet be among those heading for the exit door as the Citizens get ruthless, whilst Kevin de Bruyne has already confirmed the news that he will be leaving as a free agent at the end of the season.

Like many, Guardiola has been full of praise for De Bruyne in the last week as his legendary Premier League career begins to reach a conclusion. The Man City boss told reporters: “You always have to be careful, have respect for the players who play main roles, and incredible players that play for the last, I don’t know, 20, 30 years in this club.

“But come on, there’s no doubt he’s one of the greatest, for sure. Because of his consistency – except the last year, year and a half, that he had injury problems – in important games and not important games, and every three days being there. Our success in the last decade, that would be impossible without him.”

Real Madrid now readying shock move to sign "irreplaceable" Man City star

He could join Kevin De Bruyne on the list of departures.

ByTom Cunningham Apr 5, 2025

What the Belgian’s exit will do is open up a crucial space within Guardiola’s side for their next De Bruyne. Just who that may be amid recent links to the likes of Morgan Rogers and Florian Wirtz remains to be seen, but the Citizens could yet welcome another fresh star on top of replacing their club legend in the near future.

Man City eyeing shock Lamine Yamal move

As opportunistic as ever, Manchester City are now eyeing the chance to sign Lamine Yamal from Barcelona, according to Mundo Deportivo. The teenage sensation is expected to sign a new deal at Barcelona, but if that does not prove to be the case then he will become a free agent in 2026 – allowing City and others to make a sensational move.

Of course, securing his signature on a free is likely to be the only way that any club manage to lure Yamal away from Barcelona. The Spaniard reportedly has a release clause worth an eye-watering €1bn (£850m) at the La Liga giants, which not many if any suitors around world football will be able to afford any time soon.

Lamine Yamal for Barcelona

If the La Masia graduate did decide to leave, meanwhile, then he would instantly become football’s most in-demand free agent. At just 17 years old, Yamal is already one of the world’s best and has already been compared to the likes of Neymar, who he looks destined to exceed at Barcelona.

Comparing his club teammate to his fellow Brazilian, Raphinha told reporters: “Messi is from another world. Inexplicable. I see him more like Neymar – the dribbling, how fast he thinks to dribble. When you think you can steal the ball from him, he does something you’ve never seen in your life.”

"Very interesting" new 49ers takeover update shared by Rangers "sources"

A “very interesting” Rangers takeover update has been shared regarding 49ers Enterprises and their deal at Ibrox.

49ers agree Rangers takeover in principle with Ibrox manager needed

The 49ers group, who currently own Leeds United, are looking to expand their network of clubs and have agreed a deal in principle to takeover at Rangers.

Sky Sports reported last month that there is ‘growing confidence on all sides that it will be completed ahead of the new season’, with Leeds chairman Paraag Marathe and health insurance tycoon Andrew Cavenagh leading the takeover bid.

Talks have also taken place around future investment, and there have been suggestions that the 49ers could go into the summer market with a £20m+ transfer budget.

However, with Barry Ferguson only in interim charge as things stand, the 49ers will need to appoint a permanent Rangers manager first, with the caretaker potentially in line as an option to get the role on a full-time basis.

There have been other names mentioned with the Ibrox job, though, including former Rangers boss Steven Gerrard, who is now thought to be “ready” to return to work in the UK after his time at Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia.

ByTom Cunningham Apr 16, 2025

Rafael Benitez has also been mooted as a target, and recently, ex-Southampton manager Russell Martin and Strasbourg boss Liam Rosenior have both been linked with a move to Scotland.

It promises to be a busy few months off the pitch in Glasgow, however, a new takeover claim has emerged in recent days, one that could concern some supporters.

“Interesting” 49ers takeover update at Rangers shared by ex-CEO

Talking to Football Insider, ex-Aberdeen CEO Keith Wyness had an “interesting” takeover update to share after talking to his “sources at Rangers this week”. He claimed that the 49ers are viewing the deal for Rangers as a “business transaction” and currently “don’t quite understand” the passion from the Rangers fanbase at this moment in time.

“I’m hearing some very interesting things from my sources at Rangers this week. They’re saying that the 49ers are looking at this like a business transaction, they don’t really get what they’re going into – in terms of the fans, the sectarian situation and the religious connotations.

“The Rangers fanbase have a massive passion. It’s alright to see it occasionally, but you’ve really got to live in it and get to know it if you’re going to invest like this. It’s an unusual beast and it’s very powerful. What I’m hearing is that the 49ers don’t quite understand that side of it.”

Sky Sports reported last month that there is confidence a deal will be completed ahead of the 2025/26 season, and by the looks of things the 49ers could have a bit of a shock on their hands when they show up to their first Old Firm next season.

Moyes can finally ditch Doucoure by unleashing Everton's new Ross Barkley

Everton need to trim the fat this summer. Oh, while excitement is in the air as David Moyes gears up for what may be the club’s biggest summer of spending, there’s plenty going on out the exit door too.

As many as 15 first-team players are out of contract at the end of the season. Some will stay. Many will go. Two of these quandaries take the shape of the culminating loan spells of Jack Harrison and Jesper Lindstrom, neither of whom has enjoyed the best of terms. Several more are made from flotsam drifting out on short-term stints elsewhere.

There are too many profiles to dig into, but one curious expected outgoing is the man who earns more than any of his Toffees teammates: Abdoulaye Doucoure.

Everton set to part with Abdoulaye Doucoure

Back in 2020, Everton signed Doucoure from Watford in a deal worth £20m, and he’s since made 162 appearances for the Blues in all competitions, scoring 21 goals.

Abdoulaye Doucoure

Regarded as a ‘pressing machine’, the Malian ace is now 32 and while he still works industriously in the middle, three goals across 29 matches is hardly a prolific return for an attacking midfielder whose duel success rate stands at just 39% in the Premier League this year, as per Sofascore.

Indeed, one of those facing the end of their contract this summer, the £130k-per-week Doucoure is Everton’s top earner. Given the amount of shuffling set to take place over at Bramley Moore this summer, it would be a grave error to renew Doucoure’s deal on the same terms.

He’ll be midway through his 33rd year by the end of next season and, despite scoring the winner at Nottingham Forest a few weeks back, no longer carries the same swagger in the final third.

Everton need a new star in attacking midfield. Iliman Ndiaye, Charly Alcaraz and Dwight McNeil make three exciting options, three good reasons why Doucoure’s influence is waning.

Everton midfielder Charly Alcaraz

That said, the fans could be in for an even more thrilling ride if Everton’s new version of Ross Barkley hits his stride after flourishing for the academy.

Everton's new Ross Barkley

Barkley featured 179 times for Everton’s first team after breaking from the Finch Farm youth ranks, notching 52 goal involvements and drawing inevitable comparisons to Wayne Rooney.

However, he left for Chelsea in January 2018 for a £15m fee, now long archived as a bygone part of the Merseysiders’ history.

It’s been a while since such a player rose to the fore (Anthony Gordon notwithstanding), but Moyes might just find he holds the keys to unlocking the next prodigy, with 17-year-old Braiden Graham making waves for the development outfit.

Graham’s still in that unsure maiden stage, struggling to find his best position. However, a four-goal performance from attacking midfield for the U21s last time out in the Premier League 2 suggests that maybe he has a future as a ten.

With such dynamism, ranged in his ability to make a positive impression on the pitch, Graham’s surely going to go a long way, not least because his shooting boots seem to stay intact wherever he features.

The Northern Ireland youth international has been hailed as a “fearless” forward and an “incredible player” by his former Linfield boss David Healy, prior to transferring to the Toffees. In short, there’s an ever-loudening buzz around this young talent, whose eye for goal and crisp, powerful dribbling offer shades of Barkley in his Everton days.

Having scored four goals in a single game against Tottenham Hotspur’s U21s – away from home – makes a firm comment on this young man’s potential, not least because Spurs’ U21s won the Premier League 2 last season.

One to watch, and maybe one whose professional Everton debut lingers not too far away.
