Kevin Pietersen helped to broker the landmark deal between the co-owners of Delhi Capitals and Hampshire, ESPNcricinfo can reveal. After lengthy talks, Hampshire announced a new “strategic partnership” with the GMR Group on Monday, which Pietersen hailed as a “historic day in English cricket”.Pietersen, who played for Hampshire from 2005-10, spent three years under contract with the Delhi franchise in the IPL, then called the Daredevils, and captained them in 2014. He has since maintained a personal relationship with Kiran Kumar Grandhi, GMR’s chairman, and the pair attended England’s T20I against Australia at the Utilita Bowl together earlier this month. While Pietersen does not have any active business interest in GMR or Hampshire, he is understood to have introduced the two parties to one another in an informal role. “HISTORIC DAY in English Cricket! Congrats to everyone on this journey,” he wrote on X, in response to the deal’s formal announcement. “It’s only the start…. LFG! [Let’s f***ing go].”Pietersen (left) and Grandhi (right) in conversation at IPL 2014•BCCI

Rod Bransgrove, who chairs Hampshire’s parent company, said that he had spent 18 months speaking to potential investors from “all over the world” and that “four or five” parties had placed formal bids. Bransgrove said that GMR were ultimately chosen because of their “ethos”, “family orientation” and commitment to “social responsibility.”Bransgrove confirmed that Pietersen played a part in the deal: “Kevin takes an ambassadorial role for GMR and we’ve certainly spoken to him once or twice. He’s been very interested in the potential for this because, obviously, he knows the GMR culture, he knows our culture, and he knows that they’re very well suited to each other. In that respect, yes, he has been involved.”Grandhi, whose son Ruchir is also involved at Delhi, told ESPNcricinfo that Pietersen was “the common link” between him and Bransgrove. “He is a good friend,” Grandhi said. “He knows Rod. He knows me. He is the common link: he is a mutual friend.”Will GMR buy Southern Brave?GMR are front-runners to buy a 49% stake in Southern Brave as part of the ECB’s privatisation of the Hundred and have expressed their interest to Raine, the US investment bank who are running the sales process. Bransgrove said the agreement pre-dated any speculation about changes to the Hundred’s ownership model and should not be seen as a back-door attempt to invest in a franchise.Related

Hampshire confirm investment talks amid IPL link

GMR Group 'keen' on Southern Brave investment after securing Hampshire deal

“When we struck this deal with GMR, we said that a part of our asset base is a one-nineteenth interest in the financial benefit of the Hundred competition, less a 10% consideration which goes to the grassroots game,” Bransgrove said. “They made a valuation of that in terms of calculating the overall value of the package.”Subsequent to that, there’s been all sorts of talk about providing 51% ownership to host venues and then selling the other 49% and ‘will this prejudice that?’ and all those kind of things. What we’ve inserted is that there will be an uplift in the value that’s been ascribed… in the event that we are awarded a franchise – which, of course, we’ve only been awarded in principle so far.”This is still under debate because it is contingent on us finding a market value based bidder for the other 49%. The deal is not contingent on getting a Hundred franchise… it’s something we’ve agreed between us and there will be a further-stage payment in the event that a Hundred franchise is allocated to the Utilita Bowl or Hampshire Cricket during the period before final closing.”If the franchise stays with Hampshire as anticipated, it could either be run entirely by GMR or as a joint venture with another business. “I’ve spoken to at least two other potential interest parties,” Bransgrove said. “That’s out of my gift, what happens to the 49%, but it can only sell to a related party if it’s at a true market value – which I’m certain that Raine will be monitoring.”Southern Brave play their home games at Hampshire’s Utilita Bowl•Harry Trump/Getty Images

Bransgrove: I want Hampshire at ‘top table’The Utilita Bowl will host its first men’s Ashes Test in 2027 and Bransgrove said that the deal was informed by his desire to retain the “leadership position” at English cricket’s “top table” assumed by the award of that fixture.”It’s going to be business as usual for Hampshire, except with the confidence of having GMR behind this,” Bransgrove said. “What will change over a period of time is that we will start to benefit from the proliferation of cricket around the globe in the franchise format: although I can’t disclose where, it’s likely that we will participate in an overseas franchise competition in November.”It is just a great opportunity all round. There’s no doubt in my mind that this country in particular is quite resistant to change. It’s quite a traditional country; in fact, worse than that, we resent change. And some people will tend to blame the Hundred for every single thing that goes wrong in their lives.”Clever businesses recognise the trends and position themselves to be able to exploit the trends to the benefit of their business, and that’s what I’m seeking to do here. I don’t think I’ll be the last person to do it, and I think it’s going to be very good for Hampshire cricket ultimately, as private ownership has been to the game at large.”

Pro-Shakib and anti-Shakib groups clash outside Mirpur stadium

A clash broke out between pro-Shakib Al Hasan and anti-Shakib Al Hasan groups outside the Shere Bangla National Stadium on Sunday, the day before the first Test between Bangladesh and South Africa.A group called “Shakibians” chanted slogans, demanding Shakib be reinstated in the Test squad, but was chased away by another group in the presence of security forces. All this while the South Africans were training inside the stadium. There were no injuries reported, but the Dhaka-based said that security forces had detained one person.Until this clash, the two sets of protesters – those who want Shakib to get a chance to play a farewell Test series and those who are politically opposed to Shakib, who was a member of the Awami League party whose government was overthrown in August – had carried out their protests separately.Related

Shakib had been picked in Bangladesh’s squad for the first Test against South Africa last Wednesday, but a day later, a group called Mirpur Chhatra Janata (a student body) sent the BCB a letter demanding his removal from the squad. Things moved quickly after that. Shakib told ESPNcricinfo on Thursday that he wouldn’t be traveling to Bangladesh for the game. The BCB withdrew him from the team the following day, with sports adviser Asif Bhuiyan confirming that he had told Shakib not to travel to Bangladesh because of security concerns.Shakib’s fans gathered outside the Shere Bangla for the first time on Friday, demanding his reinstatement in the Test squad. They repeated the protests on Sunday, though this time they were barricaded by security forces.Shakib, a globetrotting cricketer, lives primarily in New York City, and hasn’t been in Bangladesh since May this year. At the time of the anti-government protests, which led to the overthrow of the Sheikh Hasina (Awami League) government, Shakib – a member of parliament from the party at the time – was in Canada taking part in Global T20 Canada. Prior to that, he was in the USA for Major League Cricket and, since then, he has played Test cricket in Pakistan and India apart from playing one game for Somerset in the County Championship.

The next Maddison: Spurs preparing approach for "exceptional" £22m talent

Tottenham Hotspur have been on the hunt for a new attacking midfielder throughout the summer transfer window, but so far, their quest has been to no avail.

Morgan Gibbs-White appeared to be Thomas Frank’s main target earlier in the transfer window, even triggering the England international’s £60m release clause.

However, the Nottingham Forest star was also set for a medical before Evangelos Marinakis intervened and put the deal on hold, before the 25-year-old signed a new contract at the City Ground.

Morgan Gibbs-White 2024-25 stats (timeless)

After missing out on his signature, the Lilywhites hierarchy have been hunting for added reinforcements to help bolster their Premier League ambitions in 2025/26.

Multiple players have since appeared on their radar, which could see numerous top-level talents make the switch to North London ahead of the new campaign.

The latest on Spurs’ hunt for new additions this summer

After missing out on Gibbs-White, Spurs have targeted Liverpool star Harvey Elliott in recent weeks, with the Englishman available for a fee in the region of £40m this summer.

However, they could also be about to miss out on the 22-year-old, after Bundesliga side RB Leipzig entered the race to prise him away from Anfield in recent days.

Harvey Elliott celebrates for Liverpool

He’s not the only attacking midfielder currently on their radar, with Leicester City star Bilal El Khannouss a player the club are considering, according to Ben Jacobs.

He claims that the hierarchy are preparing an approach to land the Moroccan international, who made 32 appearances for the Foxes in the Premier League last season.

Jacobs also states that the 21-year-old has a £22m relegation release clause in his current contract, opening the door to a bargain deal for the Lilywhites this summer.

Why Spurs’ latest target would be their next Maddison

James Maddison has been Spurs’ main option in the number ten position over recent seasons, after he made a £40m transfer from Leicester City back in the summer of 2023.

James Maddison for Tottenham

The 28-year-old has registered 16 goals and 19 assists in his 75 appearances for the Lilywhites, with last campaign being his best since moving to North London.

However, his impact in 2025/26 could prove to be limited, after he suffered what appeared to be a serious knee injury in the recent pre-season clash against Newcastle United.

Boss Frank confirmed that the injury could be a serious one, suffering another issue with the knee that caused him bother towards the back end of the previous season.

Their previous hunt for another talent in such a role showcases their ambitions of strengthening their squad, potentially turning to El Khannouss as a result of Maddison’s setback.

Any move for the Moroccan star would see a repeat of a deal for the Englishman, joining the Lilywhites from Leicester, before making a key impact in the first team.

He even managed to outperform Maddison in numerous key areas last season, undoubtedly one of the shining lights within the Foxes’ squad despite their relegation back to the Championship.

El Khannouss, who’s been labelled “exceptional” by analyst Ben Mattinson, posted a higher tally of progressive carries per 90, whilst completing more carries into the final third – handing Frank’s side an added threat with the ball at his feet.

He also managed to complete more key passes per 90, along with a higher tally of through balls per 90, subsequently able to register an end product to his mazy runs in attacking areas.

The 21-year-old further bettered Maddison in terms of aerials won, an asset that would make him a tremendous all-round option for the Lilywhites ahead of 2025/26.

If he can replicate such talents in North London, he would be another excellent addition to the squad, following in Maddison’s footsteps of being a fan favourite after moving from Leicester.

Leicester City's BilalElKhannoussin action

His £22m release clause would make him a bargain addition, such a move handing the Moroccan the platform to improve massively in the years ahead, given his tender age.

Vettori to leave Australia Test coaching duties for IPL auction

Sunrisers Hyderabad coach will attend the IPL auction in Jeddah during the first Test, despite being Australia’s bowling coach

Australia’s bowling coach Daniel Vettori will leave the team during the first Test against India in Perth to attend the IPL auction in Saudi Arabia as Sunrisers Hyderabad coach. The Test starts on November 22 at Perth’s Optus Stadium while the IPL auction will take place in Jeddah over two days on November 24-25, which has caused some conflict for three IPL coaches – Vettori, Ricky Ponting and Justin Langer, who are in Perth to either coach or commentate.Vettori is one of the rare coaches in world cricket that holds a permanent assistant role with an international team while also being the full-time head coach of an IPL franchise and the full-time head coach of a Hundred side in Birmingham Phoenix.Vettori has been Australia’s bowling coach for all three formats since 2022 working under long-time friend Andrew McDonald. He is highly-valued by Cricket Australia to the point where they have allowed him to pursue franchise coaching roles around his commitments with the men’s team.”We are very supportive of Dan’s role as Head Coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad,” an Australia team spokesperson told ESPNcricinfo. “Dan will complete final preparation for the first Test before attending the IPL auction. He will then be with team for the remainder of the Border Gavaskar Trophy.”The prioritisation of the IPL auction over a Test match, as well as the scheduling of the auction in Saudi Arabia during an Australia-India Test, is a sign of the times. Ponting and Langer, who are employed as commentators with Australian broadcaster Channel Seven, are also set to miss part of the Test to attend the auction as head coaches of Punjab Kings and Lucknow Super Giants.Vettori has missed certain series in recent years due to his franchise commitments with replacement coaches seconded to work with Australia. However, this will be the first time he will leave midway through a Test to attend the IPL auction, having been able to fulfil his duties with Australia this time last year against Pakistan before flying to India for the auction in between matches.CA is also advertising for a new full-time national pace bowling coach who will be able to fill-in for Vettori in the future on tours that he misses.Vettori was on deck with Australia’s squad at their first day of training at the WACA ground on Monday, working closely with the bowling unit while also throwing left-arm orthodox deliveries to the batters in preparation for facing Ravindra Jadeja in the Perth Test.Australia had two consultants working with their main coaching team on Monday in former Australia batter Michael Hussey and former Glamorgan, Leicestershire and Somerset allrounder Jim Allenby, who is permanently based in Perth. Both men worked with Australia’s team ahead of the first Test against Pakistan last summer and will be with the team all week in the lead in to the Test match.Australia’s fielding coach Andre Borovec is currently in charge of the T20I side that is playing the three-match series against Pakistan which concludes in Hobart on Monday night. Both he and Josh Inglis, the stand-in T20 captain, will fly from Hobart to Perth tomorrow to join the Test squad.CA’s national development coach Lachlan Stevens, who coached Australia A against India A and coaches Australia’s Under 19s, will fly into Perth to as additional support for the team when Vettori departs.

Everton considering £90m double move for Dibling and teenage prodigy

Everton manager David Moyes is reportedly weighing up the idea of signing a “special” Premier League player alongside their move for Tyler Dibling this summer.

The Saints teenager has emerged as a leading target for the Blues in the current transfer window, with three bids already rejected for his services by the Championship club.

Now, Southampton chief executive Phil Parsons has produced a bullish update on Dibling’s future, promising that he won’t be sold to Everton for anything below their asking price, which is thought to be around £50m.

“We’re not a club that’s going to roll over and just accept a bid because they feel like they want him on the cheap. If you want a player, bid for them and bid well. If we lose a player, we need to give Johannes (Spors, sporting director) the funds to replace that player. But it’s really been about cleaning up the squad.

Southampton's TylerDiblingcelebrates scoring their third goal with Mateus Fernandes

“We’ve had a really big squad for a couple of years. That’s when it comes to bringing in academy products because that’s a part of who we are. We have to produce talent from our academy. We’ll see how the window goes, but if Tyler’s here this season, he’ll play for Southampton. He’s not going to sit around. It’s the same for every player.”

He’s not the only talented young British player is being eyed up by the Merseysiders however, following a fresh transfer claim.

Everton eyeing move for "special" Sunderland teenager

According to a new report from TEAMtalk, Everton have “explored a deal” for £40m-rated Sunderland midfielder Chris Rigg, having sent scouts to watch him in action last season. It is claimed that the Blues still see Dibling as their top target, but will follow Rigg’s performances in the Premier League cloesly with Moyes a massive fan of the 18 year-old. Deals for both players could amount to £90m.

Sunderland'sChrisRigg

Rigg is a player who could have an enormous future in the game, so the idea of him in an Everton shirt alongside Dibling is mouthwatering, even though signing both won’t be easy.

The Sunderland ace is already a key man for the Black Cats at the age of just 18, starting 37 Championship matches last season and being hailed by former teammate Jobe Bellingham after sharing the Young Player of the Year award at the North East Football Writers’ Association Awards.

“I think first and foremost Riggy really deserves it and I’m delighted that we can share it because I think it’s really special. Both of our names will be attached to that forever because I love playing with him. We’ve got a really special bond on and off the pitch, we’re really good mates.”

Dream Dibling alternative: Everton explore move for "phenomenal" £40m teen

Everton are hoping to make another signing or two in the summer transfer market.

ByAngus Sinclair Aug 9, 2025

While some Everton fans will understandably want to see Rigg sign this summer, seeing how he performs over the next year could be more sensibly planning, even though it is risking bigger clubs coming in for him next year.

OPINIÃO: São Paulo de Dorival aposta no pragmatismo. Mas invencibilidade mostra que caminho está certo…

MatériaMais Notícias

Cinco minutos.
