Bangladesh 'crossed all the barriers to bring a wonderful win'

Tamim Iqbal, Minhajul Abedin and Habibul Bashar heap praises on the Bangladesh team following their historic win against New Zealand

Mohammad Isam06-Jan-2022Bangladesh ODI captain and senior player Tamim Iqbal praised the team for crossing “all barriers” to beat New Zealand in their own backyard in the first Test in Mount Maunganui. On Wednesday morning, there were celebrations led by Tamim and other players following the historic win, at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka, where the BCL final was taking place.Tamim praised the scale of the victory, particularly keeping in mind Bangladesh’s previous record in New Zealand.Related

“We returned empty-handed from New Zealand for many years, many tours,” Tamim wrote on his official Facebook profile. “The situation was tougher this time. But the team crossed all the barriers to bring a wonderful win. Beating New Zealand in New Zealand is one of the toughest jobs in world cricket. We showed that we can.”What really touched me was that it was a total team effort. It is a team with great spirit. No praise is enough for Ebadot [Hossain]. [Mahmudul Hasan] Joy, [Najmul Hossain] Shanto, Liton [Das], [Mehidy Hasan] Miraz and Yasir [Ali] everyone contributed in the win. Even Taijul Islam took a brilliant catch as a substitute.”Tamim said that captain Mominul Haque deserved special mention for continuing to motivate the team during a “difficult time”.”I will mention someone separately. At a very difficult time, when no one believed in the team, when there was doubt within the team too, only one man didn’t lose his belief. He always tried to motivate the team by saying ‘we can, we definitely can’, despite bad days, bad performances. He has tremendous love for Test cricket. He gives the most priority to Test cricket. I doff my cap to the captain, Mominul Haque.”Chief selector Minhajul Abedin wants the team to use this blueprint to continue their success in Tests.”This is a memorable win. It is a huge milestone for our cricket.” Abedin said. “I think if we hold on to this process for the next three to five years, we can become a good Test-playing team.”People say a lot of things about the cricketers’ ability, but playing while being in a bio-bubble is tough. They have adjusted themselves and given the nation a great gift. Definitely, they deserve a salute.”Habibul Bashar, another senior selector and a former national captain, called the win Bangladesh’s greatest accomplishment in Tests.”I am lost for words. I am extremely happy. We have won a few Tests, done a few good things, but I think this is our greatest achievement as a Test-playing nation.”We played great cricket throughout this Test match. In every department. Top-order batting, fast bowlers, spinners. Even the captain got us breakthroughs. It will be tough to find something negative from this Test win.”

Mithali Raj: Was difficult to play with less than 12 hours for recovery

Velocity were bowled out in their Thursday afternoon game, having played the tournament opener on Wednesday night

PTI05-Nov-2020Velocity captain Mithali Raj said her team found it difficult to recover before their match against Trailblazers, less than 12 hours after the first Women’s T20 Challenge game on Wednesday night. Velocity were bowled out for 47 on Thursday afternoon and lost by nine-wickets against Trailblazers.”As far as playing in the afternoon [is concerned], we haven’t even got 12 hours to recover from yesterday’s game. So clearly yes, it has been difficult for the girls to prepare themselves and come back and play the afternoon game after playing last night,” Raj said in the post-match press conference. While the other two teams have rest days between their games, Velocity played two consecutive games in under 24 hours and had to travel between Dubai and Sharjah. They’re the only team in the tournament without days between fixtures in the league stage. They were undone by left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone, who took 4 for 9. Raj praised Ecclestone’s ability to adapt.”That’s why she’s number one. She came up with a game plan and quickly adapted with her line and length. After Shafali hit her for six she bowled pulled her length onto the shorter side and got wickets in the powerplay.”Jhulan Goswami took two wickets for Trailblazers and said that she merely focused on getting back to match sharpness.”I just stuck to my basics. After a long time I was playing this format of the game, so I just wanted get back the rhythm and momentum. That was my plan.” The 37-year-old said the tournament was good for Indian cricket and that a longer version of it would benefit the youngsters in India’s growing talent pool.”Last year, Shafali played here and was picked in the Indian team and she was so good in the World Cup,” Goswami said. “If we get more matches the youngsters get the opportunity to learn from overseas players and it will be good for Indian cricket.”

Recovering Rahul won't be fit in time for India's first two Asia Cup games

Coach Dravid confirms the wicketkeeper-batter’s unavailability for the Asia Cup games against Pakistan and Nepal

Shashank Kishore29-Aug-2023KL Rahul, who has been recovering from an injury, has been ruled out of the Pallekele leg of India’s Asia Cup campaign – matches against Pakistan and Nepal. He will not travel to Sri Lanka on Wednesday with the rest of India’s squad and, instead, continue to work with the physios at Bengaluru’s National Cricket Academy (NCA) in a bid to be “fully fit” and available for the Super Four stage of the competition. Rahul will undergo a fitness assessment on September 4 before a call on his travel to Sri Lanka is taken.Head coach Rahul Dravid said Rahul had been “progressing really well” and that the team management doesn’t see his unavailability for the early part of the Asia Cup as a setback.”From our perspective, it’s only two less games that he is going to [play],” Rahul said at the conclusion of India’s conditioning camp in Alur, near Bengaluru. “He is batting really well, he’s keeping… well, he is doing everything. It’s just a slightly more cautious approach with him leading into the World Cup.Related

“He’ll have a couple of match simulations over the course of the next few days, which gives him a little bit of a longer time out there in the middle. We are hoping that it should be only two games that he misses, and then he should be available for the later part of the tour.”There is an Australia series as well, so I’m not too worried about it. He’s an experienced player, both him and Shreyas [Iyer, who is also on a comeback trail after a long injury layoff] have played a lot of cricket. They are very experienced players and hopefully we can give him the game time.”Rahul’s unavailability for part of the Asia Cup raises the question about his participation in the World Cup – he hasn’t played competitively since early May, when he picked up the injury during the IPL. The plan is for the selectors to finalise the 15 for the World Cup after India’s second match in the Asia Cup, on September 4 against Nepal, to meet the September 5 deadline set by ICC to submit the World Cup squads. When the squad for the Asia Cup was named on August 21, Rahul was only deemed conditionally fit. While he had fully recovered from the thigh injury he sustained during IPL 2023, which required surgery, Rahul picked up a “minor niggle” subsequently, chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar had said.At the time, the NCA medical team was understood to have been satisfied with Rahul’s batting workload, but were concerned about his wicketkeeping after he complained of soreness after one of the practice games.

Rahul displays batting form in Alur nets

On Tuesday, the final day of India’s six-day camp in Alur, Rahul hit the nets and batted for nearly 35 minutes, facing up to pace, spin and the throwdown specialists after some light warm-up drills. He didn’t keep wickets, though.Rahul began his session against spin, presumably because of his role at No. 5. He seemed in sparkling form; he used his feet well in stepping out to hit legspinner Mayank Markande against the turn, used the depth of the crease to nudge deliveries, and then appeared to bring out full-blooded sweeps against the two left-arm spinners R Sai Kishore and Manav Suthar.Rahul then faced up to Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna in the second net against the new ball. Rahul’s focus seemed to be on aligning himself with the bounce, getting behind the line and playing straight or using the pace to steer the ball behind square. Then, finally, he was at the throwdown specialist’s net, Rahul was seemingly trying and duck and get into good positions against the short ball. After the session, Rahul had a chat with Dravid and Virat Kohli.Over the past couple of days, while Rahul hasn’t been in any physical discomfort the team management has carefully ensured his wicket keeping drills haven’t been too exhausting. On Monday, he went through keeping drills that focused on sideways movements, especially to spin. However it was a brief session. He was also seen chatting with Rishabh Pant, who spent some time doing rehab and fitness drills with the team.India have Ishan Kishan as a wicketkeeping option in the Asia Cup squad, while Sanju Samson has been named a travelling reserve.

Ian 'Gunner' Gould whistles his way into the sunset

The time was right to stop, says Gould, as he calls time on a 13-year career as a match official

Nagraj Gollapudi in Leeds07-Jul-2019Ian Gould walked out of a cricket field one last time whistling. That whistle was something you could always see ‘Gunner’, as Gould was known to cricketers and the media, do, whether in the middle of a high-pressure situation in an international match or as you passed him. Like many famous umpires, Gould was a popular personality, both on and off the field. On Saturday, Gould retired from umpiring, having stood in the World Cup match between India and Sri Lanka at Headingley. It was his 140th ODI as an umpire and he drew the curtains on a 13-year career.Gould, who played 18 ODIs for England and was part of the 1983 World Cup, joined the ECB’s first-class umpires’ list in 2002 and made his debut as an international umpire in a T20 between England and Sri Lanka in 2006. He stood in his first ODI a few days after that and his first Test – between South Africa and Bangladesh in Bloemfontein – two years later. This year’s World Cup was his fourth.”The time was right (to stop),” Gould said on his decision to retire. “I’ve had a great year and I’ve enjoyed it. I thought the time now is to move on and let someone else come through.”The last batsman Gould gave out in his career, although not on his own initially, was Rishabh Pant. In the 42nd over of India’s chase, Sri Lanka’s left-arm quick Isuru Udana bowled a slower ball that beat Pant and struck him in front of the stumps. Gould hardly moved in response to the lbw appeal but Sri Lanka opted for a review and once replays showed three reds, Gould had to change his decision and raise his finger.

Immediately after India’s victory, Virat Kohli walked up to Gould and hugged him. So did many other players. If you know Gould, you understand why players respected him. Communication is a big part of umpiring and only a few came close to doing it better. Gould could poke fun of a player, no matter how experienced or young, and elicit an instant laugh from him. This is what made him an endearing personality. There was one bit of advice Gould had for the future batch of umpires: take that extra step to understand the player. Umpiring becomes an easy job that way. “You’ve got to understand people, you’ve got to meet people, talk to people, you have to practise with people,” Gould said. “They get to understand you and you understand them. It makes it a lot easier if you do it that way. All I can ever say to anyone, and the other umpires have heard this a million times, is keep smiling and enjoy it.”

The West Indies captain will join Harmanpreet Kaur at the top of the order

ESPNcricinfo staff24-Aug-2022West Indies captain Hayley Matthews has signed with Melbourne Renegades for the upcoming WBBL season. In five of the past seven years, Matthews has played for Hobart Hurricanes where she scored 865 runs at 18.02 and took 41 wickets. Her signing means she will team up with Harmanpreet Kaur in Renegades’ top order.”Any team that I’m part of, I try to bring a bit of West Indian flair to it,” Matthews said. “I really like to go out there and have fun every time I’m out on the field.”As a West Indian, our culture is big hitting and excitement in the field – that’s exactly what I’m looking to bring to the Melbourne Renegades.”James Rosengarten, Melbourne Renegades general manager, said: “Alongside Harmanpreet Kaur, we see Hayley playing an important role in our top four. She brings a wealth of experience at international level and in the WBBL.”Hayley’s ability to impact the game with the bat, ball and in the field – combined with her leadership attributes – makes her an exciting addition to our team.”Although Australia fast bowler Tayla Vlaeminck is part of Renegades’ squad having moved from Hurricanes she won’t be available this season as she continues her recovery from the stress fracture of her foot sustained earlier this year.Current squad Sophie Molineux (capt), Sarah Coyte, Josie Dooley, Ellie Falconer, Ella Hayward, Harmanpreet Kaur, Carly Leeson, Hayley Matthews, Rhiann O’Donnell, Tayla Vlaeminck, Georgia Wareham, Courtney Webb

Australia's stars align as Alyssa Healy fifty sets up thumping win

New Zealand blown away for 76, Ashleigh Gardner bags 5 for 12

Sreshth Shah11-Feb-2023A total of five match-winners stepped up for Australia in their opening match of the T20 World Cup, as the defending champions began their pursuit of a sixth T20 title with a 97-run demolition job of Trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand. The tone in Australia’s victory was set by their captain Meg Lanning, with her 33-ball 41 allowing Ellyse Perry and Alyssa Healy to build through the middle overs. Perry smacked 40 in 22 balls, Healy hit 55 in 38 deliveries and Australia handed New Zealand 174 to chase. But New Zealand had the worst possible start when Megan Schutt took two big wickets in the first over of the chase. New Zealand could never recover from thereon, and Ashleigh Gardner feasted on their misery to run through their tail. She finished with a five-wicket haul and her career-best T20I figures while Sophie Devine’s side return to the drawing board following the heavy defeat.

Australia’s big three step upHealy and Lanning linked up when Australia were in a spot of bother. Opener Beth Mooney was out for a duck to a terrific diving catch from Eden Carson, and Lea Tahuhu was getting the new ball to swing. Instead, the pair counterattacked, and the 15 runs they took in the last over of the powerplay took Australia to 47 for 1 after six.Lanning enjoyed most of the strike in the period and was enterprising with her charges down the track that ended up with boundaries through the V. With seven fours, she raced to 41 in 32 balls before a googly from Amelia Kerr had Lanning missing a cut and she was out bowled in the tenth overThe dangerous Gardner fell soon after to Tahuhu after getting a leading edge to an attempted flick, and that brought Perry – in rich form from the away series in India – to the crease. Perry was off the blocks quickly, but on 11, could’ve been out lbw had New Zealand reviewed a shout from Kerr. She made full use of the second life to bludgeon Tahuhu and Fran Jonas around, and after a slow start, Healy too came out of her shell.Healy turbocharged her way to a fifty in 35 balls with runs coming from both ends, and the duo reached their fifty partnership in only 25 deliveries. But Healy was out on 55 when Tahuhu outfoxed her with a slower ball that was mistimed to the deep.Perry, though, kept going for the big shots, hitting Tahuhu and Kerr for sixes. Even though Kerr had her lbw for 40, Perry’s innings at a strike rate of 181.81 ensured Australia did not stagnate through the middle overs, more so with Healy struggling early on.With Grace Harris run out cheaply and Jess Jonassen, Alana King and Tahlia McGrath showing little resistance, it appeared Australia would be all out – a rare occurrence for the T20I side – but No. 11 Darcie Brown finished the innings with a boundary to take the defending champions to 173 for 9.Kerr was the pick of the New Zealand bowlers, taking two of her three wickets with googlies, and finished with 3 for 23. Tahuhu’s three-for cost her 37 runs, with a few loose deliveries interspersed between the 11 dot balls in her spell.

Schutt, Gardner run through NZ

At the halfway stage, Healy said that 173 was solid but not out of reach for a side of New Zealand’s calibre. Therefore a tidy new-ball spell against Sophie Devine and Suzie Bates was imperative. Instead, Schutt produced an imperious opening over to break New Zealand’s back. After conceding five wides off her first ball, Schutt went full with Bates dancing across her crease to play the scoop. Schutt’s extra pace did the trick, and Bates was gone for zero with her middle stump flattened. Two balls later, Schutt got a length ball from wide of the crease to angle in, and Devine’s missed flick meant she was out for zero first ball as well.Schutt could have had a third wicket in her second over when Bernadine Bezuidenhout was caught in front of the stumps to a ball angling in from a good length, but the batter survived on a tight “umpire’s call” decision.Bezuidenhout would go on to pull, reverse sweep and slog three boundaries in quick succession. Playing her first game since 2020 and on a comeback trail after two years out of the game to recover from a health issue, Bezuidenhout’s shot-making was spunky but she was adjudged caught soon after in a contentious call that saw the umpires going upstairs to a catch from Brown that even Australia were only half convinced about. Once she was gone, Harris then had Maddy Green, trying to pinch a second run, run out and New Zealand were reeling at 38 for 4.With the procession of wickets, the No. 4 Kerr showed restraint early on, but later took McGrath on for a hat-trick of boundaries with some smart use of her feet. But when Gardner went full, she failed to connect with a sweep and was out for 21.With New Zealand needing 113 runs in the last ten overs with only five wickets in hand, their aim in the game should have turned to mitigating the run-rate damage, but instead the back end of the second innings began with Gardner picking off Hannah Rowe and Tahuhu. With only the last two wickets remaining, Gardner went full and fast in her penultimate over. Her guile and turn was too much for Jess Kerr and Eden Carson to handle, and she picked off the last two wickets to finish with career-best figures of 5 for 12 as New Zealand were all out for 76.New Zealand’s next game is against South Africa on Monday while Australia meet Bangladesh on Tuesday.

Was Bumrah rushed back from injury into the India squad ahead of T20 World Cup?

“We tried to hurry up Jasprit Bumrah, and see what has happened,” chief selector Chetan Sharma said

Shashank Kishore31-Oct-2022Did India try to rush Jasprit Bumrah back from injury during their build-up to the T20 World Cup?Chief selector Chetan Sharma seemed to suggest so at a virtual press conference on Monday to announce four squads across two tours – New Zealand and Bangladesh – in November-December 2022.Related

  • Rohit Sharma: Saving Bumrah's career more important than this T20 World Cup

  • Hardik Pandya, Shikhar Dhawan to lead India in New Zealand

  • Ravindra Jadeja returns for Bangladesh tour in December

Not surprisingly, Bumrah missed the cut for those matches as he continues to recover from the back injury that forced his absence from the ongoing T20 World Cup in Australia.”I always say that we have to manage players,” Sharma said. “And when we do that, the media sometimes writes about why some players are not playing, different players are playing, different captains are coming.”The selection committee has to deal with workload management which we follow very closely. Now, we tried to hurry up Jasprit Bumrah, we tried to get him with the World Cup coming. And see what has happened? We are without Jasprit Bumrah in the World Cup.”Bumrah was first diagnosed with a stress reaction in his back in August and was ruled out of India’s Asia Cup campaign later that month. However, in September, Bumrah was declared fit and was picked in India’s T20 World Cup squad. The same squad also featured in India’s build-up to the tournament with home games against Australia and South Africa. Bumrah featured in two of the three T20s against Australia, but was pulled out on the eve of the South Africa series, India’s last before the World Cup, after he complained of back pain.Since then, Bumrah has been undergoing a rigorous rehab programme at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. Even as he exuded hope of Bumrah being available soon, Sharma was non-committal about timelines.India play six white-ball games in New Zealand before flying to Bangladesh in early December for three ODIs and two Tests. They then host New Zealand and Sri Lanka for a white-ball tour to kick off the 50-over World Cup year, before finishing their World Test Championship assignment with the Border-Gavaskar series at home against Australia (four Tests).”The NCA team and the medical team are looking after him very well. And he will definitely be part and parcel of the team very soon, in the sense definitely against Australia (series in 2023). But for Bangladesh we are a little cautious with Jasprit Bumrah as opposed to like we tried to bring him back early (post the Asia Cup). So we don’t want to do that this time.”That is why I always request the media that when we rest a player there is a reason behind that. No selector fancies that we keep changing the team or the captains – it is only that there is so much cricket, and there is so much workload management to look after that we have to keep looking after the player’s body. End of the day they are humans. He will be back soon. The NCA team is working on him properly and I hope he will return soon to play for India.”

Sourav Ganguly reveals 'Super Series' plan with England and Australia

The proposed tournament – with a fourth team participating – could become an annual affair

Daniel Brettig23-Dec-2019India, England and Australia may overturn the delicately balanced global cricket calendar and play an annual limited-overs tournament among themselves – with one other nation – from 2021 onwards, according to BCCI president Sourav Ganguly. In a possible indicator as to how the new BCCI administration would like to see the game’s schedule shape up in the future, Ganguly is reported to have revealed that the Indian board has been in discussion with the ECB and Cricket Australia about staging a four-nation tournament, hosted by rotation, every year. The arrangement could run against the ICC’s intentions – agreed to in principle by member nations earlier this year, albeit with a host of caveats – to add an extra 50-over tournament to the ICC events cycle beginning in 2023, so there is a global event providing revenue to member nations in each year of the cycle.”Australia, England, India and another top team will feature in the Super Series, which begins in 2021, and the first edition of the tournament will be played in India,” Ganguly was quoted as saying by Kolkata-based newspapers at an event organised by a fantasy cricket app over the weekend. This was soon after he had returned from a trip the UK along with BCCI secretary Jay Shah and treasurer Arun Singh Dhumal to meet ECB officials.ALSO READ: Earl Eddings – from the frying pan into the fire?Other details for the event purportedly include potential windows for each of the three nations to host it – October/November for India, September for England and October/November or February/March for Australia. There have been plenty of discussions lately about the future shape of the global game, with CA chair Earl Eddings and chief executive Kevin Roberts recently hosting ICC chief executive Manu Sawhney for a meeting in Melbourne, in addition to Ganguly’s visit to London. Eddings and Roberts are set to sit down with Ganguly and the BCCI in January, during Australia’s ODI tour of India. Some discussion is also believed to have surrounded arrangements for warm-up matches ahead of next year’s men’s T20 World Cup in Australia. It is understood that Australia are currently set to play India and West Indies in two series of warm-up matches ahead of the tournament proper. When contacted about the BCCI’s plans, a CA spokesperson declined to comment. Eddings, however, has previously expressed to ESPNcricinfo his reluctance to see the world’s major financial powers again separate themselves from the rest of member nations, who depend largely upon revenue from ICC events for their financial health, as had taken place in 2014.”I don’t think that did cricket any favours,” Eddings said of the Big Three plan. “I think there’s a balance, you find that balance between looking after your own backyard and understanding your responsibilities as a custodian of the global game, and I think that’s always a challenge.”But certainly we walk into those conversations saying we need to look at bilateral cricket, but we also, as members of the ICC, have a responsibility and accountability to maximise it and make it work for everyone.”

Cross, Lamb among wickets before Heap guides Thunder chase

Hosts record first win of the season after Sunrisers limited on used pitch

ECB Reporters Network27-May-2023England trio Kate Cross, Sophie Ecclestone and Emma Lamb impressed with the ball and the latter with the bat as well to help Thunder secure a commanding Charlotte Edwards Cup victory over Sunrisers at Emirates Old Trafford – the region’s first success of 2023.All three are in contention to play in this summer’s home Ashes from next month and shared five wickets to limit Sunrisers to 116 for 8 having elected to bat, laying the platform for a seven-wicket win with 21 balls remaining. They were miserly with either seam or spin, with Cross’s 2 for 20 from four overs of seam the most encouraging having battled against a tropical disease in recent weeks. Ecclestone struck once with her left-arm spin and Lamb twice with her offspin. After her 2 for 24, Lamb then added 31 in Thunder’s aggressive chase. But it was her opening partner Liberty Heap who shone with a career best 46 off 49 balls. It was also the 19-year-old’s highest score in senior regional cricket. This was Thunder’s first victory in eight 50-over and T20 matches in 2023, including back-to-back defeats at the start of the Charlotte Edwards Cup. For Sunrisers, they have now played three and lost three in this competition.Cross, who recently revealed that she had to go through nine courses of antibiotics to treat an illness picked up abroad in pre-season, set the tone with the second ball of only her fifth match of the season. She uprooted the off stump of former South Africa international Dane van Niekerk for nought, a peach of an away-swinger leaving Sunrisers at 0 for 1.Cordelia Griffith came in and played positively for 36 off 35 balls, including two boundaries in as many balls against the offspin of Fi Morris – the first lofted over mid-off and the second seared through cover. But she was the second wicket for Cross when she miscued high to mid-off, leaving the score at 64 for 3 in the 12th over.Crucially, only one other batter, Flo Miller from No. 7, reached 20. She was bowled by former team-mate Naomi Dattani in the final over an innings which saw Thunder captain Ellie Threlkeld chop and change through seven different bowlers to deny Sunrisers any rhythm on the same pitch used for Thursday’s T20 double-header day. While Lamb returned 2 for 24 from her four overs, Ecclestone was the most economical bowler on show with 21for 14 from her four. Her wicket of Amara Carr caught at mid-off following a miscue was sandwiched in between the two Lamb strikes as Sunrisers slumped to 81 for 6 in the 15th over. Lamb had Grace Scrivens caught at cover and bowled Jo Gardner.Lamb later gave Thunder the ideal start to what proved a serene chase, clipping a boundary through midwicket as 10 came from Kate Coppack’s first over. Both openers played their shots, and Heap made the most of being dropped on 16. Thunder reached 50 without loss after seven overs, by which time the game was only going one way.Heap maintained pace with her more experienced partner and overtook her after Lamb had been trapped lbw sweeping at captain Kelly Castle’s offspin – leaving Thunder 64 for 1 in the 10th over.Morris flicked the offspin of Mady Villiers to short fine leg shortly afterwards, leaving the score at 74 for 2 in the 11th, but Heap gained support from West Indian overseas Deandra Dottin to get their side over the line.Unbeaten Dottin crashed two big straight sixes in 26 off 15 balls, while Heap was bowled by Eva Gray just shy of 50 with only 10 to win.

All-round Shakib takes Barishal to top of points table

He also used his spinners effectively to squeeze Comilla during the chase

Mohammad Isam07-Feb-2022How the match played out
Fortune Barishal used spin to squeeze out Comilla Victorians from the BPL’s first contest in Sylhet this year, winning the match by 32 runs. To rub further salt into the wound, Barishal also replaced Comilla on top of the points table with 11 points from eight games.Shakib Al Hasan continued to star with both bat and ball, hitting his second fifty in the competition before picking up 2 for 20 from his four overs. But it was his use of Barishal’s offspinners that kept Comilla quiet. Nayeem Hasan and the part-timers Najmul Hossain Shanto and Chris Gayle combined to pick up four wickets in their eight overs while conceding 44 runs. Nayeem finished with 3 for 29 while Dwayne Bravo also chipped in with two.Earlier, Barishal had a productive batting powerplay and a handy middle-order stand to post 155 for 5, which proved to be a winning total.Big hit
Shakib’s half-century, his seventh in the BPL overall, contained four fours and two sixes – most of them coming down the ground. He added 67 runs for the fourth wicket with Tohwid Hridoy, who scored an unbeaten 31 off 37 balls.Munim Shahriar had earlier given Barishal some impetus with his 25-ball 45. He also targeted the straight boundary, hitting three sixes in the long-on to wide long-on range.Shakib’s form though is a complete turnaround after having scored 46 runs in his first four innings. Since then, he has had scores of 41, 50 and 50, leading Barishal’s batting when it has mostly struggled for big totals.Big miss
Comilla dropped Faf du Plessis to make room for pace-bowling allrounder Karim Janat, but the top and middle-order batters couldn’t make a fist of the 156-run chase. Imrul Kayes and Litton Das couldn’t give Comilla the required start. Mominul Haque top-scored with 30 but neither he nor any of his partners pushed for the run rate.Although Shanto and Gayle were effective with the ball, they haven’t really delivered with the bat for Barishal. Shanto’s runs graph in the BPL is flattening after failing to reach a fifty in the seven matches. Tanvir Islam removed him for 1 in this game as he miscued a slog inside the powerplay. Barishal hasn’t got enough out of Gayle either, who made just 10 today.
