Another award for Hannah Hampton! England & Chelsea star beats fellow Lioness Alessia Russo & Ballon d'Or winner Aitana Bonmati to prestigious BBC Women's Footballer of the Year accolade

Lionesses star Hannah Hampton has been named BBC Women's Footballer of the Year following her exceptional exploits for England and Chelsea. After helping the Blues to win an unbeaten domestic treble, the goalkeeper inspired the Lionesses to an incredible Euro 2025 triumph and the individual accolades have now followed, with this just the latest award to come the 25-year-old's way.

  • Official: Hampton beats Russo, Bonmati and more to prestigious BBC award

Hampton was unveiled as the 2025 recipient of the BBC Women's Footballer of the Year trophy on Tuesday, beating out competition from fellow Lioness Alessia Russo after the striker also played her part at Euro 2025 and helped Arsenal to win the Champions League. Mariona Caldentey, another member of the Gunners' squad, was also nominated, alongside fellow Spain internationals Patri Guijarro and Aitana Bonmati, the latter of whom just claimed her third successive Ballon d'Or. However, it was Hampton who prevailed here, announced as the winner on the BBC's programme on Tuesday morning.

She is the ninth different recipient of the accolade, which was first awarded to Asisat Oshoala back in 2015, and the fourth England player to win it, after Earps, Beth Mead and Lucy Bronze, the latter of whom has won it twice. Ada Hegerberg, the Lyon striker, is the only other player to have multiple wins.

How Hampton starred to be named BBC Women's Footballer of the Year

After winning the first-ever Women's Yashin Trophy at the Ballon d'Or ceremony back in September, this accolade is yet another well-deserved one for Hampton after a truly terrific year for club and country. The 25-year-old was superb for Chelsea in the 2024-25 season as the Blues won the Women's Super League, FA Cup and League Cup without losing a single game across the three domestic competitions, setting record after record along the way.

Then, she went to Euro 2025 with England and, under an intense spotlight following Mary Earps' shock retirement, produced big moment after big moment. Her penalty-saving heroics helped the Lionesses defeat Sweden in a shootout in the quarter-finals, a fantastic late stop ensured England stayed in the semi-final clash with Italy before beating the Azzurre in extra time and she was again the shootout hero in the final, breaking Spain's hearts as the Lionesses retained their European title.

  • Hampton's first words after recognition she didn't 'expect'

Speaking after being surprised with the award by Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor, Hampton told : "I definitely didn't expect it. With all the other players nominated, I think they've all had unbelievable years. I don't think I did until the final moment when Sonia revealed the trophy."

Asked about her stand-out moments from an outstanding past year, Hampton said: "Winning the Euros is special. Being able to put on an England badge is a special and proud moment. You never take it for granted. Even if it's just around the hotel and you're wearing the kit, it's always a lovely moment when you've got any sort of England badge on your chest. At club level, the season we had last year, the treble winning season, it's an unbelievable achievement from the club and nothing less than what they deserve."

She also reflected on the criticism that women's goalkeepers have endured in the past and how that is changing, because of shot-stoppers past and present. "Obviously goalkeeping is a position that needs a lot of resilience," she noted. "It's a lonely position, but it's also very rewarding. You could be the hero at moments and you could also be the villain at moments. I want to achieve a lot more in the game and I can't dwell on people's thoughts – that's going to hinder me, not help me. The 'keepers before me from Carly [Telford], from Karen [Bardsley], from Mary [Earps], even before that, they've changed the perception of women's goalkeeping. It’s definitely taking off and we're trying to change the perception slowly but surely and make sure it's being seen in the right light."

After breaking the news to Hampton, Bompastor added: "Hannah’s been incredible on and off the pitch since I joined Chelsea. She has been one of our leaders, performing really well. She has been the best goalkeeper in the world and it’s a pleasure to present her with the trophy."

Explained: Why Hampton may not play again in 2025

This award will be a nice boost for Hampton at a difficult time, as she is currently sidelined with a quad injury that could rule her out until the New Year. It means she is set to miss England's final camp of 2025, which will see the Lionesses take on China and Ghana in friendlies over the course of the next week, and potentially some big games for Chelsea too, especially in the Champions League.

The Blues, who sit two places off automatic qualification in the UWCL league phase, take on Roma on December 10 and Wolfsburg, who just beat Manchester United 5-2, on December 17, but could have to do so with young Switzerland international Livia Peng in between the sticks, rather than the more established Hampton.

The BCB has brought in Alex Marshall, Julian Wood and Tony Hemming as the three new appointments after its meeting in Dhaka on Saturday. Wood will come in as a specialist batting coach for three months. He is a power-hitting specialist who recently worked with Sri Lanka Cricket.Marshall has been appointed as a consultant for the board’s anti-corruption department, for one year. Marshall was the ICC’s anti-corruption unit general manager until September last year. BCB’s media committee chair Iftekhar Rahman said they want Marshall to “enhance” the board’s anti-corruption unit.Rahman also said that the BCB has appointed the ICC’s integrity unit to oversee the BPL’s anti-corruption operations. The BCB’s anti-corruption unit is currently investigating corruption allegations from the BPL and Dhaka Premier League of the 2024-25 season. The BCB has also brought back Hemming, who recently resigned as the PCB’s head curator. Hemming had taken up the Pakistan role after being BCB’s curator from July 2023 to July 2024. Hemming’s appointment brought the question of whether Gamini Silva, the Shere Bangla National Stadium curator, will continue in his role. Rahman said that Gamini was given a one-year extension.”Tony Hemming has been appointed head of turf management for two years,” Rahman said. “All our international venues and curators will be under him. He will also undertake the process of training Bangladeshi curators. All the board directors had a lot of interest in bringing him back.”Hemming is one of the best curators in the world. Maybe he had a good experience with the BCB in the previous occasion, that’s why he agreed to come back. The turf management will run as Hemming will want. Time will tell if Gamini will stay or not. He has been given a 12-month extension.”Meanwhile, the BCB introduced Mymensingh as the latest first-class team. It will replace Dhaka Metropolis, which was introduced in 2011 to make it an even number of teams in the first-class competition.”Mymensingh is one of the country’s newest divisions,” Rahman said. “They will play in the NCL first-class tournament from the coming season. They will replace Dhaka Metropolis. Mymensingh will play all divisional tournaments though we can’t accommodate them in the upcoming NCL T20s as the schedule has been made. Mymensingh will play in the T20 tournament from the next edition.”

Serie A giants Fiorentina set to sack Stefano Pioli as board set sights on potential replacement

Serie A outfit Fiorentina are set to part ways with Italian head coach Stefano Pioli after their defeat to Lecce. The Viola are currently navigating profiles who could be potential replacements for Pioli and are assessing the financial impact of removing their head coach.

What led to Fiorentina's decision?

Medon Berisha scored the only goal of the match in the 23rd minute as Fiorentina went down to Lecce in the Serie A. This was their third loss in the last five games, and apart from Lecce, they also faced defeat at the hands of Inter and Milan, while securing a 2-2 draw against 10-man Bologna. The latest defeat is believed to be the root cause behind the potential sacking of Pioli, who joined the club this summer after a stint in Asia with Cristiano Ronaldo's Al Nassr. Notably, the Viola, after 10 games in the domestic league, are yet to register a victory, losing six games and drawing the other four. Despite possessing players like Edin Dzeko and Italy international Moise Kean up front, they have struggled for goals.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportFiorentina board exploring options

According to a report by TuttoMercatoWeb, the administrators are currently working on settling the financial aspect of the deal, which will be paid as compensation to Pioli. The former Al Nassr supremo was signed on a three-year contract with a salary of over €3 million net per season. The decision-makers, technical director Roberto Goretti and general manager Alessandro Ferrari, are looking for new options, with Paolo Vanoli emerging as a top candidate to take over the reins. However, Fiorentina might also make a shocking move by appointing the youth coach Daniele Galloppa as an interim solution.

Is Pioli ready to step down?

A twist in the tale, or the most recent development, is that Pioli had a long call with the Fiorentina board. At the same time, he has communicated his decision not to step down. According to Football Italia, the coach is ready to make adjustments in his existing contract; however, he is not ready to  resign. He has been in charge of Fiorentina for 114 days, managing them in 14 matches. While he has won four games, the fact that his side are yet to record a victory in Serie A has left trigger fingers in the boardroom rather itchy.

Getty Images SportWhat comes next for Fiorentina?

Whether Pioli would be forcefully sacked in the upcoming days is a matter for the future. Fiorentina now have two important fixtures before the November international break commences. On Thursday, they will face German side Mainz in the Conference League, and three days later, they will lock horns with bottom-placed Genoa in a vital clash. The positive so far about Pioli is that his side has won both their Conference League games, and successive wins against Mainz and Genoa might offer him a cooling period before club football resumes in late November, where they'll have to face Juventus and Atalanta in the league and AEK Athens in the continental competition. If they record two wins this week, it would mark the first time that Pioli has managed the side to successive victories.

Deal signed: Aston Villa "very pleased" as youngster pens Villa Park contract

One Aston Villa gem has signed a Villa Park contract which the club seemingly decided against posting on social media.

Unai Emery linked with surprise Aston Villa exit

It has been an unusual start to the Premier League season for Villa and Unai Emery, who finally picked up their first three points of the season at the sixth time of asking on the weekend.

After falling behind to Fulham, Villa scored their first home league goals of the campaign to win 3-1 and move out of the relegation zone.

Former transfer chief Monchi has also left the Midlands, and now, Emery is being linked with a move to Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad, who are on the search for a new manager after parting ways with Laurent Blanc.

Following Monchi’s exit, Emery was asked last week if he is more committed than ever to Villa, to which he said: “More speculation? I know it’s a different speculation. The reality is we drew and in the league we are not performing well.

“We have to work and work hard. With the players I have meetings after the game and talk about how we want to be, tactically and with the demands we have.”

Emery added: “We are starting the season with the problems we had, the problems before, with the transfer window. Some players joined us late. We are trying to recover our performance.

“Now we are a different team, our emotions and our emotional moments are becoming better. I will want to show how we’ve improved in everything.”

Away from the speculation, though, Aston Villa have moved quietly to secure the services of a potential future star.

Aston Villa teenager pens first professional contract

It was announced on Aston Villa’s website on Tuesday that young defender Finlay Barnard has signed his first professional contract.

The club said they are pleased the U18 ace has committed his future at Villa Park after agreeing scholarship terms having signed over the summer Tottenham.

The update wasn’t posted on Villa’s X social media, so it is news that may have gone under the radar.

A versatile defender, Barnard will be looking to breakthrough into the first-team setup over the coming years, and continuing to impress Harrison will only help his case.

Farke must now drop Longstaff to finally unleash Leeds "tiger" instead

Leeds United are back in action in the Premier League this afternoon as they travel to the Midlands to take on Wolverhampton Wanderers away from Elland Road.

The Whites are still looking for their first open play goal of the top-flight season. They are also looking for their first win in all competitions since they beat Everton 1-0 on the opening day.

Leeds are aiming to bounce back from a 1-0 defeat to Fulham at Craven Cottage last time out in the Premier League, and it will be interesting to see what, if any, changes Daniel Farke makes to the side.

One of the players who should be ruthlessly ditched from the starting line-up after the loss to the Cottagers is central midfielder Sean Longstaff.

Why Leeds should drop Sean Longstaff

The summer signing from Newcastle United played the full 90 minutes against Fulham, but failed to offer much defensively or in possession aside from one shot that hit the woodwork.

Longstaff only completed two progressive passes in 90 minutes on the pitch in the middle of the park, per FBref, whilst also failing to create any chances for his teammates, which shows that he rarely looked to play forward with purpose.

The English midfielder also lost six of his ten ground duels and two of his three aerial contests, per Sofascore. Fulham’s players found it too easy to get the better of him in physical battles, and did not have to worry about what he did on the ball.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

This is why Farke should ruthlessly ditch him from the line-up for this clash with Wolves, because Ao Tanaka should be unleashed in his place to provide more quality in possession.

Why Ao Tanaka should start over Sean Longstaff for Leeds

The Japan international was an unused substitute against Fulham after returning from a knee injury, and the head coach should now bring him back into the starting XI.

Tanaka was pivotal to the way that Leeds dominated the Championship last season, with the technical security and quality that he offered in the middle of the park for Leeds.

The 27-year-old star, who was described as a “tiger” by Farke, also contributed out of possession thanks to his ability to win the ball back for his side through tackles and interceptions.

As you can see in the table above, Tanaka ranked highly among his fellow midfielders in the second tier in key passing and defensive metrics, which shows that he can offer balance in midfield by contributing on and off the ball.

The Japanese star also showed that he can translate that sort of control in possession over to Premier League level with a pass completion rate of 91% and six progressive passes against Everton on the opening day per FBref.

Tanaka could offer far more progression in possession than Longstaff, who has made four progressive passes in over 300 minutes of action this season, per FBref, which could help Leeds to get up the pitch and create more in the final third.

Leeds have failed to score a goal in the two games that Longstaff has started, against Newcastle United and Fulham, and Farke needs to find a way to improve how his side operates on the ball in creative areas.

It's not Darlow: Leeds star is in danger of becoming their new Meslier

ByDan Emery Sep 16, 2025

This is why bringing Tanaka back into the XI for the English midfielder could be a good move by the German coach, because he appears far more likely to provide the attacking players with the progressive passes that they need to be effective in the final third.

Boehly ditched Chelsea's own Alexander Isak in "unbelievable" talent

While they have faced plenty of flak for it in recent years, is it time to admit Chelsea might be onto something with their transfer strategy?

Since their takeover, the Blues have clearly focused on signing young, exciting talents with high ceilings and either integrating them into the side or selling them for profit.

The likes of Cole Palmer and Estevao fit into the latter category, while Noni Madueke and Lesley Ugochukwu fit into the former.

However, while the club have made an enormous amount of money this summer, there is one player they probably should have kept hold of, someone compared to Alexander Isak.

Chelsea's best sales this summer

As we’ve mentioned, most of Chelsea’s sales this summer have been quite impressive, with Madueke being a prime example of their strategy working.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast’s Where Are They Now series.

They signed the Englishman from PSV Eindhoven for around £29m in January 2023.

Then, over the next two and a bit years, he made 92 appearances for the club, scored 20 goals, provided nine assists and was then sold to Arsenal for £52m, netting the club a tidy £33m profit.

Another great sale, from a financial perspective anyway, was that of Renato Veiga.

The Portuguese international cost the Blues around £12m last summer, and then joined Villarreal for £26m last month, after spending the 24/25 season out on loan.

Juventus'RenatoVeigareacts

Finally, Djordje Petrovic moved to Stamford Bridge for around £14m in August 2023 and was sold to Bournemouth for £25m this summer, which made him the tenth most expensive goalkeeper in history at the time.

Overall, you’d have to say that Chelsea did a great job with their departures this summer, apart from one, that is, a player who has been compared to Isak.

Chelsea's own Isak

From looking at the list of players who left Stamford Bridge over the last few months, it shouldn’t be too surprising to learnt that the player in question is Nicolas Jackson.

The Senegalese striker joined Bayern Munich on a season-long loan for £14.25m that includes an obligation to buy at £56.25m should certain conditions be met.

Now, there are some who would be happy to sell the dynamic forward, and that is fair enough; he wasn’t always the most clinical of strikers.

However, he is clearly a talented international, and one who has won comparisons to perhaps the best number nine in the world: Isak.

Yes, according to FBref, the Swedish monster was the number one most similar forward to the Blues star in the entire Premier League last season.

That might sound unbelievable to some, but to gain a better understanding of how this conclusion was reached, we can examine some of the underlying numbers in which they ranked so closely.

In this instance, those metrics included non-penalty expected goals plus assists, shots and shots on target, goal-creating actions, aerial duels won and more, all per 90.

In other words, the “unbelievable” star, as dubbed by Peter Crouch, might not be as clinical as the new Liverpool man, but he’s just as creative and in the right situation could cause as much chaos for opposition defenders.

Ultimately, while moving on Jackson might end up being a good idea, we can help but think Todd Boehly and Co may have made a mistake, especially given the comparisons to Isak.

Stunning Eze repeat: Arsenal agree personal terms to sign £52m star

The last seven days or so have been nothing short of a roller coaster for Arsenal fans.

It all started with the news that Kai Havertz had suffered another injury setback on Wednesday morning, which, after last season, felt like a real hammer blow.

However, by the end of the day, the fanbase was in dreamland, as the club were back in for the extraordinarily talented Eberechi Eze, and within a few days, he was being unveiled in front of a packed-out Emirates.

Yet, as if the Englishman wasn’t enough, the Gunners are now back in the market and appear to be closing in on another signing who could be looked at as a bit of an Eze repeat.

Arsenal target Eze repeat

With all the understandable excitement Eze’s arrival has whipped up over the last few days, it’s easy to forget that even before his arrival, Arsenal were having a great window.

Premium Arsenal Experiences

The additions of Viktor Gyokeres and Martin Zubimendi could well be transformational for the starting lineup, and the likes of Noni Madueke and Cristhian Mosquera have added some much-needed depth.

Yet, even with the seven signings made under Andrea Berta’s watch this window, the Gunners appear keen to add at least one more name to that list, someone who could be looked at as another Eze-type signing.

At least that is according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, who has claimed Arsenal are very interested in Piero Hincapie.

The respected journalist has revealed that the Bayer Leverkusen defender wants to leave the German outfit this month and that he is prioritising a move to the Emirates.

Interestingly, while the Ecuadorian international has a €60m release clause in his current deal – around £52m – the North Londoners are making efforts to reduce that fee to something “more realistic.”

Even then, this will likely be a costly deal, but personal terms are not expected to be any issue with reports on the continent noting that Hincapie and the Gunners have agreed a contract up until 2030.

Hincapie has proven he’d be more than worth it in recent seasons, especially as this would be another Eze-esque deal.

Why Hincapie would be another Eze

Now, don’t worry, it is not lost on us that Hincapie and Eze operate in very different areas of the pitch, and play the game in very different ways because of this.

However, their positions have little to do with why this deal could be another Eze-esque situation.

Instead, one of the main reasons why their arrivals would be somewhat similar is the fact that Tottenham Hotspur have been interested in both players this summer.

In fact, according to some reports, the Gunners’ bitter rivals have already been in contact with the Leverkusen star, and had him reasonably high up on their list of targets this summer.

So, if this is to be believed, then it would be another case of Berta and his team once again usurping the Lilywhites and moving in on someone they wanted to sign.

Piero Hincapie in action for Bayer Leverkusen

However, there are a few other similarities between the two players and their situations as well.

For example, like the former Palace star, the “Ecuadorian football legend in the making,” as talent scout Jacek Kulig dubbed him, is a regular member of his national team, and while he often plays at centre-back, he’s versatile enough that he can excel at left-back as well.

Moreover, he’s currently a guaranteed starter in Germany, and, like the Greenwich-born star, played a key role in helping his team do something for the first time in their history when they won the league a couple of seasons ago.

Ultimately, even though it has somewhat come out of nowhere, Hincapie looks like he could be an excellent signing for Arsenal, and one that mirrors Eze’s arrival last week.

OPINIÃO: São Paulo de Dorival aposta no pragmatismo. Mas invencibilidade mostra que caminho está certo…

MatériaMais Notícias

Cinco minutos.
