Inter Miami player ratings vs. Toronto: Lionel Messi blanked by Reds as tired Herons settle for disappointing road draw

Inter Miami let a first-half lead slip and were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against Toronto FC, a result that dealt a significant blow to their Supporters’ Shield ambitions. Javier Mascherano’s side looked tired as the match wore on, and though they left Canada with a point, the dropped opportunity highlighted their struggle to finish strong.

Tadeo Allende's header in the 45th minute was canceled out by a tidy tap in from Djordje Mihailovic in the 60th minute, and despite late efforts, Miami couldn't find a go-ahead goal. Lionel Messi came close after 30 minutes, cutting onto his right foot before drawing an acrobatic save out of Sean Johnson from the top of the box. It was otherwise a chaotic first half of soccer, both sides struggling to create and combine.

And then, it came alive. Johnson provided another big moment on the stroke of half time, saving low from Messi's whipped effort. Allende broke things open in stoppage time, finishing a sweeping Miami move with a close range header.

rather took their foot off the gas in the second half, and let the home side back into it. Accordingly, Toronto responded on the hour mark. Richie Laryea cut back for Mihailovic, who couldn't miss from six yards out. Miami pushed for a winner as the game wore on. Messi stung Johnson's palms from open play. He did so again from a free kick. But a winner never came, and Miami will head home with merely a point. And they didn't deserve any more.

Oscar Ustari (6/10):

Didn't have much to do in the first half. Could do nothing about Toronto's equalizer.

Ian Fray (7/10):

Tucked into more of a center back role when Miami attacked. Held his side down.

Maxi Falcon (6/10):

Good in his 1v1s. Looks far more comfortable when games are slowed down a bit.

Noah Allen (6/10):

Calm on the ball. Covered the left side when Alba scampered forward. Lost his man on the Toronto goal, though.

Jordi Alba (7/10):

Handled his defensive duties effectively. Combined with Messi, as per usual. Assisted Miami's opener with a lovely cross.

Tadeo Allende (7/10):

Took his goal well – even if it was put on a plate. Didn't have many touches otherwise.

Sergio Busquets (7/10):

As classy as usual in his first game since announcing his plan to retire at the end of the season. Controlled spaces, won his tackles, and circulated the ball effectively. Hooked on 70 minutes to keep his legs intact.

Rodrigo De Paul (7/10):

An industrious midfield display. Up for the scrap, played forward, and gives this team an extra attacking dimension.

Baltasar Rodriguez (7/10):

Saw a shot well denied early on and was full of life. Covered a lot of ground defensively. Looked tired after an hour and was hooked.

Lionel Messi (8/10):

Full of little moments of magic from the first minute. Set up his teammates, saw a string of strong efforts saved. Might've had a hat trick on another day.

Luis Suarez (5/10):

Tried to run a lot despite looking unable to for long stretches. Up to his usual antics of irritating defenders. Ineffective, all said.

Telasco Segovia (6/10):

Replaced Rodriguez and linked up with the rest of the Miami attack well.

Marcelo Weigandt (6/10):

Offered a bit more attacking thrust on the right.

Yannick Bright (6/10):

A really tidy cameo in a defensive midfield role.

Javier Mascherano (5/10):

Went with a more attacking side, and got a valuable first half goal. But won't be pleased with his team taking their foot off the gas. A disappointing draw.

Superior to Wissa & Watkins: The "next Gyokeres" is Newcastle's new target

After winning the Carabao Cup last season, ending Newcastle’s 56-year wait to win a major trophy, it looked as though the PIF project was coming to a head.

Qualification for the Champions League was then secured on the final day of the campaign and the Toon were ready to attack this transfer window with intent.

To their credit, Eddie Howe’s men haven’t been shy in the transfer window but they’ve simply been met with fierce resistance and a series of rejections.

Supporters came into this window with plenty of excitement but it’s been nothing shy of a nightmare. Their best player since Alan Shearer, Mr Isak, wants to depart and hasn’t been shy of letting his desires be known, releasing quite the angry statement on Tuesday evening ahead of the PFA awards.

Newcastle have, at least, welcomed Anthony Elanga and Aaron Ramsdale to St James’ Park, but a striker continues to elude them.

The latest on Newcastle's striker hunt

Crikey, what a summer, eh? Newcastle have missed out on a whole plethora of forwards in recent months, notably Hugo Ekitike and Benjamin Sesko who turned down the Magpies’ advances, instead signing for Liverpool and Manchester United respectively.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Work is currently being undertaken to bring Yoane Wissa to the north east but despite the player’s apparent desperation to make the move, Brentford are stubborn. After losing Bryan Mbeumo, Thomas Frank and skipper, Christian Norgaard already this summer, they are not keen on seeing their prized striker leave for cheap.

Newcastle are trying hard to sign him but with an alleged £60m price tag, obstacles have so far yet to be cleared.

Still, there are alternatives including the likes of Ollie Watkins, Nicolas Jackson and Wolves’ Jorgen Strand-Larsen.

Yet, according to French reporter, Julien Laurens, Sporting CP attacker Conrad Harder is also on their radar.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Transfer Talk podcast on Wednesday, he stated: “They’ve tried to find a replacement for him [Isak]. They like Conrad Harder at Sporting, but he is not as developed already compared to the others we mentioned already. Certainly no Premier League experience, unlike the other three [Wissa, Jackson, Larsen].”

Amid interest from Milan, reports in Italy have indicated that the Portuguese club are seeking a fee of £24m to sell this summer, although that does seem unlikely given they have already sold Viktor Gyokeres to Arsenal.

Speaking of the Gunners’ new striker, Harder has already been described as “the next Viktor Gyokeres” by Scouted Football. Here’s why.

How Harder compares to Wissa and Watkins

It’s abundantly clear that Wissa is Newcastle’s leading target this month and while they would love to sign someone like Watkins too, that one feels more unlikely.

Yet, by landing a bargain deal for Harder before the transfer window slams shut on 1st September, they’d be acquiring a raw player but someone who is actually already more complete than the pair of them.

Harder had to play second fiddle to Gyokeres in Lisbon last term but he still caught the eye, with the 20-year-old scoring 13 goals and supplying ten assists across 54 appearances in all competitions. It’s worth noting that those involvements came from just 20 starts. Impressive work indeed.

The Dane does need to refine his skillset but it’s clear to see why he’s already being compared to Gyokeres. Slightly stockier, talent scout Jacek Kulig hails his “powerful finishing” and his “excellent top speed” while describing him as a “complete forward”.

So, what do the numbers say? Well, it looks favourable when comparing him to Watkins and Wissa.

It’s safe to say that the Sporting youngster isn’t as prolific as the more proven talents of Wissa and Watkins just yet.

However, in every metric besides progressive passes, the Denmark youth international has proven himself to be an incredible talent, undeniably showcasing that he’s more complete across a whole range of facets.

Harder is not just a goalscorer but he’s capable of creating goals on a regular basis, notably registering more key passes than Watkins, who actually finished as the Premier League’s leading assist maker back in 2023/24.

Furthermore, he’s capable of dribbling with the ball on a regular basis, ranking highly for progressive carrying, and he can hold the ball up well, winning far more aerial duels per 90 minutes.

Conrad Harder for Sporting Club.

Newcastle fans will be holding out for a big-money striker, particularly with Isak’s future in doubt, but they could do far worse than bringing Harder to England.

Morris set for rare back-to-back Shield games as WA press for another final

Morris and Bancroft named for WA, Lyon to miss the remainder of the season for NSW, Khawaja and Kuhnemann set to return while Peake is in-line for Victoria debut

Western Australia quick Lance Morris is set to be unleashed against New South Wales amid a complicated balancing act with his bowling load management as WA push to try and qualify for a fourth straight Sheffield Shield final.Meanwhile, Test offspinner Nathan Lyon will not play again this season for NSW as he continues to rest and rehab a hip complaint he managed through the tour of Sri Lanka. Lyon’s spin partner in Sri Lanka, Matthew Kuhnemann will return for Tasmania after being cleared of throwing following ICC testing while Usman Khawaja has also been named for Queensland.Related

Morris has been named in WA’s 14-man squad alongside Cameron Bancroft who will return from the broken shoulder he suffered in the BBL to play his 100th Shield match against NSW at the WACA ground.Morris’ inclusion is the most noteworthy given he is contracted to Cricket Australia and they have been managing his playing schedule this summer. Morris, who turns 27 later this month, has played just three Shield matches this season, including WA’s most recent win against Queensland in Brisbane, but has been playing with a maximum overs restriction of 25 per game coming off a stress fracture last winter as well as a quad strain late in the pre-season.It is understood he was initially set to be rested from the match against NSW with a view to being made available for WA’s final home and away game against Victoria next week at the WACA ground. Such a schedule could have left him unavailable for the final as CA’s medical team are understandably very cautious about Morris playing back-to-back Shield games at the moment due to his extensive injury history, given he is a developing international prospect as one of the few bowlers in Australia capable of clocking speeds in excess of 150kph consistently.Morris is understood to be frustrated at being held back despite being in good shape having bowled well in the second innings at the Gabba after some rust in the first innings. Morris articulated his frustration earlier in the summer in an interview with ESPNCricinfo explaining that scans have shown a stress issue that is not causing him pain. WA have also had difficulty trying to manage his overs restrictions in games while trying to qualify for the Shield final. Morris has not bowled more than 25 overs in a match since November 2023 and has not played four Shield games in succession since late 2022.Morris’ case is a prime example of why CA has appointed Adam Griffith as the new national pace bowling coach to unify the approach to management of fast bowlers across national, state and franchise cricket. CA have also appointed current travelling Australia men’s team physio Nick Jones to a permanent Australia-based case manager role to coordinate and oversee the rehabilitation of injured players while a new team physio will be appointed to travel full-time with the team.Cameron Green is another player who will be managed by Jones as he continues his recovery from back surgery, but he is unlikely to play a Shield game before a County Championship stint with Gloucestershire.Daniel Sams and Cameron Bancroft collided when going for the same catch•Cricket Australia via Getty Images

Meanwhile, Bancroft is set to become the 13th WA player to play 100 Shield matches. He will return at the top of the order and will be fine to field in the slips but will be slow to return to throwing after breaking his right shoulder in a sickening collision with Sydney Thunder teammate Daniel Sams during the BBL.Australia’s semi-final exit from the Champions Trophy on Tuesday also opens the door for Cooper Connolly to potentially be available for WA’s next Shield clash with Victoria but it appears unlikely they will get Josh Inglis or Aaron Hardie back for either the last round of the season or a potential final given both have IPL contracts, with the IPL starting on March 21 just three days after the last Shield round of the season and five days before the Shield final.Elsewhere, Khawaja will return for Queensland to face Tasmania at Bellerive Oval in Hobart after resting from the loss to WA following his successful tour of Sri Lanka. Jack Clayton also returns to further bolster Queensland’s batting after missing the WA clash with a hamstring injury. Kuhnemann has been included in Tasmania’s squad as has left-hander Caleb Jewell who has not played Shield cricket since he was omitted from Tasmania’s first-choice side in November.Victoria have named exciting 18-year-old left-hander Oliver Peake in their 13-man squad to face Shield leaders South Australia at the Junction Oval in Melbourne. Peake is in-line to make his first-class debut having been a development tourist with Australia’s Test squad in Sri Lanka last month. Peake made 99 in Victoria’s most recent second XI match against WA and has been included alongside former NSW batter Blake Macdonald who made twin centuries in the same game. Peter Handscomb will captain Victoria as Will Sutherland has been rested. The Shield’s leading wicket-taker Nathan McAndrew has been withdrawn on match eve to manage his workload with Henry Thornton called in fresh off starring in South Australia’s Dean Jones Trophy win last weekend.South Australia can lock up a home Shield final with a win over Victoria with Adelaide Oval still an outside chance to host the game in between Australia Football League fixtures if the drop-in pitches can be transplanted back into the venue without too much disruption after being removed for the start of the football season following the One-Day final.Sheffield Shield squadsWestern Australia: Sam Whiteman (c), Cameron Bancroft, Hilton Cartwright, Brody Couch, Keaton Critchell, Joel Curtis, Sam Fanning, Cameron Gannon, Jayden Goodwin, Lance Morris, Joel Paris, Corey Rocchiccioli, Charlie Stobo, Ashton TurnerNew South Wales: Jackson Bird, Ollie Davies, Jack Edwards (c), Matt Gilkes, Chris Green, Ryan Hadley, Liam Hatcher, Hanno Jacobs, Sam Konstas, Nic Maddinson, Kurtis Patterson, Josh Philippe, Lachlan ShawVictoria: Peter Handscomb (c), Scott Boland, Xavier Crone, Harry Dixon, Sam Elliott, Sam Harper, Marcus Harris, Campbell Kellaway, Blake Macdonald, Todd Murphy, Fergus O’Neill, Oliver Peake, Mitch PerrySouth Australia: Jordan Buckingham, Brendan Doggett, Henry Hunt, Jake Lehmann, Ben Manenti, Connor McInerney, Nathan McSweeney (c), Harry Nielsen, Lloyd Pope, Jason Sangha, Liam Scott, Henry ThorntonTasmania: Jordan Silk (c), Gabe Bell, Jake Doran, Kieran Elliott, Brad Hope, Caleb Jewell, Matt Kuhnemann, Riley Meredith, Aidan O’Connor, Mitch Owen, Nivethan Radhakrishnan, Tim Ward, Jake Weatherald, Beau WebsterQueensland: Mitchell Swepson (c), Xavier Bartlett, Jack Clayton, Lachlan Hearne, Usman Khawaja, Angus Lovell, Ben McDermott, Michael Neser, Jimmy Pierson, Matthew Renshaw, Mark Steketee, Callum Vidler, Jack Wildermuth

Will Smeed signs new deal to play red-ball cricket for Somerset

Explosive batter reverses decision to become white-ball specialist, could play County Championship

ESPNcricinfo staff07-Mar-2025Will Smeed has reversed his decision to become a white-ball specialist and could make his first-class debut this summer after signing a new all-formats contract with Somerset.Smeed made headlines in 2022 when, aged 21, he opted out of red-ball cricket. “I feel that I need to solely focus my attention on the limited-overs formats in order to become the very best cricketer I can be,” he said at the time.It was viewed as a groundbreaking move, indicative of the growing divide between limited-overs and first-class cricket. While many players have taken up white-ball contracts, often while simultaneously retiring from red-ball, none had done so at such a young age.Related

Will Smeed signs groundbreaking white-ball deal with Somerset

However, after a hamstring injury ruled him out of last summer’s Hundred, Smeed found playing time for Somerset in the Second XI County Championship, which prompted a rethink. He has now stated his aim is to break into the Championship side.”I’m desperate to play more cricket than I did last summer,” Smeed said. “I picked up an injury last summer and it felt like I hadn’t really played any cricket. I played a few second XI red-ball games towards the end of last year and really enjoyed it. That’s when I started to think that this would be a good option.”Watching how the team went about things in the Championship last year was great and some of the wins were absolutely insane. It would be crazy to not want to be a part of that team.”Smeed, who scored a red-ball hundred for the second XI when he was just 16, has played almost exclusively T20 cricket in his career to date, with his one List A appearance coming for England Lions. In 2022, he became the first player to score a century in the Hundred, and was soon in demand on the franchise circuit, playing in the CPL, PSL and SA20.Somerset director of cricket, Andy Hurry said: “We all know Will has a huge amount of potential, and his return to multi-day cricket will certainly add depth to our County Championship batting options.”When he initially signed a white-ball contract, he always made it clear that the door was not closed to the red-ball game, and I know our members and supporters will be excited by the prospect of him now being available to be considered for selection in all formats for the club that he loves.”

He'd be exciting with Bakwa: Nottingham Forest in talks for late signing

Nottingham Forest have been very busy in the dying stages of the chaotic summer transfer window.

Both Nicolo Savona and John Victor have joined from Juventus and Botafogo recently to take the Tricky Trees’ total signings up to a weighty ten, with that number set to rise even higher when Dilane Bakwa finally puts pen to paper on a deadline day £35m move from RC Strasbourg.

Bakwa might not be the only exciting addition entering the City Ground, however, as Forest race against the clock to try and secure the services of this Nuno Espirito Santo favourite.

Nottingham Forest enter talks for Premier League attacker

Despite signing both Dan Ndoye and Omari Hutchinson already this summer, on top of Bakwa’s expected arrival, another top-quality winger could soon call Nottinghamshire home.

Indeed, as per reports from Spain, Forest are in “last-minute” talks now to try and tempt Fulham attacker Adama Traore away from Craven Cottage to the City Ground, with a deal for Javi Galán to join from Atletico Madrid also being worked on.

If the Europa League outfit were to successfully clinch a deal for the rapid Fulham winger in the nick of time, it would undoubtedly boost an already captivating Forest attack, with the damage caused by both Traore and Bakwa together a real sight to behold.

How Traore and Bakwa could cause havoc

Both players are unlikely to make the same XI – considering both like to regularly play on the right channel – but both will still play key roles in giving Forest some variety and energy up top.

Indeed, Bakwa has been a well-known assist machine for Strasbourg for some time now, as seen in him creating 27 big chances across his past two Ligue 1 seasons for Liam Rosenior’s men.

Traore is also known for being a direct, assist-heavy option on the right flank, with an eye-catching seven assists coming his way last season donning Fulham white, often after a blistering run had been finished off by a teammate latching onto his charitable offerings.

One of the quickest players in the division, this would certainly be a solid way of replacing one of Anthony Elanga’s main qualities.

As a result, Chris Wood could well have a field day, knowing he has both Traore and Bakwa supplying him with chances, with the 29-year-old’s trademark quick gallops up the field even seeing him be described as “unstoppable” by Pep Guardiola when performing at full pelt.

The electric attacker will also surely welcome a last-gasp switch to Forest so he can reunite with his former Wolves manager in Nuno, having tallied up a mammoth 131 career games under his guidance at Molineux, with a standout ten goals and 18 assists coming his way from those appearances.

Bakwa will also favour a switch to Forest, knowing what Nuno managed to get out of another assist-heavy winger in Anthony Elanga, with the 23-year-old also no doubt aware that he can also grow into even more of an intimidating attacker, with a Premier League regular who knows the ins and outs of the tough division like Traore to learn off of.

The worry might well be that the Tricky Trees are stockpiling an absurd arsenal of forward players, with both Bakwa and Traore adding in even more options to a loaded right-hand side.

But, with the Europa League coming into view shortly, Nuno will know he needs a plentiful squad at his disposal.

Moreover, if he can get both of these new signings to click, and potentially have them in the same lineup if he drafts Traore over to the left or through the middle, Forest should be able to blow even more teams away with their enviable firepower.
