Time for Chelsea and Liverpool to admit their mistake?

To describe Chelsea and Liverpool’s start to the season as ‘turbulent’ would be an understatement. Both sides possess sizeable squads littered with talent and yet both have so far struggled to meet the fluctuating expectations placed at their feet.

At Liverpool, Luis Suarez provides the only genuinely reliable presence in an ever-evolving team, which is stark contrast to Chelsea, who have discovered their most valuable asset is in fact their weakest link. This begs the question, should both clubs risk ridicule and recall Andy Carroll and Romelu Lukaku to improve their ailing fortunes?

The modern loan transfer arrangement is a complex beast, complicated by the intricate financial details associated with each deal. However, despite the defiance of West Ham and the reluctance of West Brom, I can’t see how they could prevent the parent team from extracting their respective players in January, even if they had to dig deep into their wallets to do so.

Sir Alex Ferguson recently dubbed Brendan Rodgers naïve for allowing Carroll to depart without a confirmed replacement already on his way. While this was an obvious attempt to goad his favourite rivals, it’s difficult to contest his assessment.

Liverpool dithered over their valuation of Fulham star Clint Dempsey to such an extent that the Cottagers launched a complaint in protest of their transfer antics. As deadline day reached its climax, Tottenham swooped in the eleventh hour, highlighting how quickly a deal could and should have been done. In the meantime Andy Carroll had already signed on the dotted line with Sam Allardyce, leaving Brendan Rodgers to rue a series of bad judgement calls.

[post_link url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/premiership/west-ham/what-to-make-of-andy-carroll,https://www.footballfancast.com/premiership/west-bromwich-albion/west-brom-fear-lukaku-loan-recall,https://www.footballfancast.com/premiership/the-15-players-likely-to-be-on-the-premier-leagues-transfer-shortlist?source=widget” target=”_blank” type=”tower”]

Rodgers may have fallen foul of false promises concerning incoming reinforcements, but he only has himself to blame for the way he handled Andy Carroll. First he was a valued member of the squad, then a back up, before reverting to his original stance when respectable offers failed to flood his inbox.

His constant stream of contradiction was epitomised when he revealed it ‘would take a special offer’ for him to allow his burly target man to depart on loan. In reality, all it required was a relatively measly £1m loan fee plus the bulk of his wages from the bank of Gold and Sullivan. Hardly an exceptional offer and one that Rodgers would certainly turn down looking back, but then again hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Rodgers only succeeded to reinforce the growing consensus that the striker has no future in Merseyside. In London however, Carroll has been treated like the £35m striker Liverpool once thought he was. He has thrived in a team that harbours no apprehension in resorting the direct style of football that will utilise his best assets. Alongside Kevin Nolan, his partner in crime, the Hammers have hustled and bustled their way up the league and currently sit three places above the Reds in the table.

Many devout Liverpool supporters have echoed Rodgers’ opinion that Carroll is incapable of conforming to his new passing philosophy. However I would argue that he doesn’t need to, it wouldn’t be in the teams or the player’s best interest. Carroll performs the unsightly aspects of football, the aerial duels, hold up play and set-piece defending, incredibly effectively. Just imagine how Luis Suarez or Raheem Sterling would benefit from the increased number of flick-ons or free-kicks that Carroll could manufacture.

Granted, Liverpool need a proven goalscorer in their ranks but while Carroll’s record this season is far from spectacular, he has never been prolific throughout his career. In the unlikely event that both parties agree to cancel their arrangement, I fear the bridge back to Merseyside may have already been burnt beyond repair.

Over at the Hawthorns, Steve Clarke has masterminded a remarkable start to the season, with the club sitting perilously close to the Champions League places. The former Chelsea assistant has managed to get the best from the diverse attacking trio of Shane Long, Peter Odemwingie and the on-loan Romelu Lukaku.

At just 19-years-old, the Belgium international has already been tipped for stardom and has flourished in his new, less demanding surroundings. The comparisons to Didier Drogba may be somewhat premature but they are not without merit. His robust, powerful presence is perhaps the only element lacking in the current Chelsea strikeforce.

Interim-manager Rafael Benitez was quick to dismiss speculation of a potential recall and instead insisted that it was best if the player continued his development elsewhere. However, while this is completely understandable, there is the underlying feeling that the Spaniard has been bought in with the primary task of restoring the faltering Fernando Torres, and Lukaku’s return would certainly hinder that process.

With the club set to depart for the Club World Cup after their match against Sunderland, there will be real onus on Torres to rediscover his form against significantly inferior opponents. Failure to impress will surely force the club to consider their options, especially if Benitez refuses to remain contempt with this babysitting gig and instead wants to make a real go if it, for his sake as much as the clubs.

When the two sides met in November to contest a particularly uninspiring 1-1 draw, statistics showed that the average height of both starting line-ups didn’t exceed six foot. Carroll and Lukaku could provide the strong aerial presence both sides seem to require and while both clubs have been linked with unproven transfer targets from foreign shores, perhaps its time they took advantage of the players already at their disposal.

Potential consequences: Everton selling Ashley Williams

According to The Mirror’s live transfer blog (June 20, 10:43am), new Everton boss Marco Silva is ready to listen to offers for centre-back Ashley Williams this summer.

The Mirror’s live transfer blog says that the 33-year-old, who has 79 caps for Wales, is likely to be a casualty along with teammate Wayne Rooney this summer, and it would be no surprise given what happened towards the end of the 2017/18 campaign.

Despite being something of a regular under Ronald Koeman and Sam Allardyce throughout the season, a red card for him in the away match at Burnley in March proved to be a turning point, and he failed to make the matchday squad for the Merseyside outfit again on his return from suspension.

So, how would selling the Welshman truly impact the Toffees? Football FanCast take a look at the potential consequences of the major summer deal for Everton…

Everton fans will be delighted

In what was a 2017/18 campaign that started with so much promise but quickly went sour, Williams was one of the players that was heavily criticised by Toffees fans on Twitter throughout for his performances.

Those supporters may well have felt that Steve Walsh and Ronald Koeman should have brought a major upgrade for the Welshman to Goodison Park last summer, and their frustrations were further enhanced when he was red-carded against Burnley in March in what was another poor display on the road for Everton.

They would have been happy to see him pick up a suspension at that time though, and they would have been even more pleased when he failed to make the squad again for rest of the season ahead of a likely summer exit.

Matthew Pennington is revitalised

The centre-back would have hoped to have picked up some vital playing experience during a season-long loan spell with Leeds United in 2017/18, but he picked up an injury on his debut in August that kept him out of action for a spell, and he struggled to be a regular in the starting XI even on his return.

Nevertheless, the Yorkshire outfit were keen to keep him at Elland Road, but instead the 23-year-old signed a new contract at Goodison Park and it could be a now or never situation for him this term.

The departure of Ramiro Funes Mori and potentially Williams too could mean that he either starts the new season in the side or as one of the first-choice back-ups, and he may well be revitalised and go on to prove that he is ready to perform regularly on the Premier League stage.

Marcel Brands steps up Matthijs de Ligt pursuit

The Telegraph reported on June 18 that Everton are lining up an ambitious bid to bring highly-rated Ajax centre-back Matthijs de Ligt, rated at £36m by Transfermarkt, to Goodison Park, and it is a chase that Director of Football Marcel Brands may well step up if and when Williams departs.

The loss of yet another centre-back after Ramino Funes Mori would make bringing a new one in a priority, and while a deal for De Ligt seems unlikely on paper given he is being courted by some of the biggest clubs in European football, it certainly can’t be completely ruled out if the Toffees make a big enough play for the teenager.

So, Everton fans, would you be happy to see Ashley Williams go? Let us know by voting below…

Tottenham fans react to rumour club is confident of signing Wilfried Zaha

According to reports in The Mirror, Tottenham Hotspur are ready to move for long-term target Wilfried Zaha again this summer and are confident of signing the Crystal Palace winger, and Spurs fans have been quick to have their say on the rumour.

The Mirror says that the north London outfit are growing in confidence that they will get the 25-year-old at their third attempt of trying, although they could face stiff competition for his signature from Premier League rivals Chelsea and Manchester City.

The Times reports that Spurs are ready to bid £50m for the Ivory Coast international, who has scored four goals and provided a further two assists in 20 top flight outings for the Eagles this term, and who only signed a new long-term deal to stay at Selhurst Park last year.

Tottenham supporters took to social media to give their thoughts on the story, and while one said “not good enough for us – he failed at Man U, he will fail again”, another labelled it as a “backwards step”.

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…

Will this Man City star leave for Real Madrid in January?

Yaya Toure has been the source of some big transfer gossip lately and could be set to leave Manchester City for Real Madrid in January.

Carlo Ancelotti is reportedly monitoring the happiness of the player after his agent came out publicly to state he was unsettled by certain issues at City, including the fact they forgot to wish the player a happy birthday.

The former Barcelona player has been a big hit at the Etihad since his arrival and has been a midfield force to be reckoned with, scoring thirty eight goals in one hundred and thirty five appearances, and one of the main reasons behind the recent success for the Manchester club with his constant top performances. The fact he went public to say he was no longer happy at the club coupled with the fact that Ancelotti’s side have had a bit of a poor start to the season and seem to be struggling with the defensive midfield position at the moment would suggest that this could well be the ideal move in January for both Madrid and Toure. This would be a fantastic deal for the Spaniards who always boast a selection of the world’s top players in their team and Yaya would fit right in as one of the best defensive/goal scoring midfielders in the world. He could be the missing piece in the jigsaw puzzle at the Bernabeu and his presence would bolster the current squad offering a big boost for the title challengers.

The player himself would also benefit from such a move as he seems to be a bit deflated in his performances so far this season, which is a big sign of his low morale at the club, and usually when you see a player stop giving 100% the writing is already on the wall. Toure has yet to reach the performance levels of last season and is yet to score in three appearances for Manuel Pellegrini’s side this term. He has also not provided an assist or made an interception for City, which is quite out of character for a player of his ability and talent.

It would be a great shame and a big loss for City to see him leave as, despite having a great squad of players, he is a key player for them and brings so much to their chances of adding to the silverware cabinet. Even the neutrals would prefer him to stay in England, it is always nice to watch such talent in the Premiership regardless of who you support and when players of that calibre go back abroad there is definitely a sense of loss for the English game.

England’s loss would of course be Spain’s gain and the Galacticos have made a big faux pas in the transfer market this summer having let two massive players leave in Xabi Alonso and Angel di Maria which would no doubt have put the Italian boss under a lot of pressure, explaining the poor start his team have had to the new season. If they can lure the unhappy star to Madrid then it would be considered a huge coup for the Spaniards and would go a long way to fill the hole left in the team by Alonso, who left for Bayern Munich this summer.

We have seen situations like this all to often in the past when a big star becomes unhappy at a club he will eventually head through the exit door and we have also seen that when Real Madrid are linked with a player, they usually turn the screws until they get what they want, as they did with Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale. So it is safe to say that if you place a bet at the bookies on this transfer going ahead there could be a chance of you having some sort of a winner on your hands.

Steven Gerrard fit for England friendly

Steven Gerrard will be fit to represent England during Wednesday evening’s friendly against Sweden.

The Liverpool skipper had a precautionary scan following Sunday’s Premier League clash with Chelsea due to concerns that he had suffered medial ligament damage.

However, the 32-year-old has been given the all clear to win what will be his 100th Three Lions cap.

An official statement from the FA read:

“Steven Gerrard has been cleared to travel with the England squad to Sweden having undergone a precautionary scan on Monday afternoon.

“The England captain reported to the team hotel following Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea and, having received positive news, is set to win his 100th cap against Sweden on Wednesday evening in Stockholm.”

If he does take part in his 100th game for the senior side he will join Peter Shilton, Bobby Moore, David Beckham, Bobby Charlton and Billy Wright as one of the only players to reach the landmark.

It had been speculated that Gerrard may be withdrawn from the squad with his club side likely to be concerned that he could aggravate the issue.

Roy Hodgson will be glad that the experienced midfielder has been cleared to play due to news that big name stars such as Wayne Rooney and Theo Walcott will be unavailable.

Revealed: Majority of Spurs fans would rather sign Ndombele than Grealish

Tottenham fans have been discussing their midfield targets for the summer transfer window, and fans are desperate for the big money move for Tanguy Ndombele.

Above all else, Tottenham’s priority this summer must be finding some proper reinforcements in midfield.

The January arrival of Lucas Moura means Pochettino now has plenty of attacking options, but with Mousa Dembele on his way out the midfield is looking paper-thin.

Fans have been voting whether they’d prefer to sign Jack Grealish or Ndombele, both of which have been strongly linked with moves to North London.

They could of course sign both, as the Frenchman is slightly more defensive minded than the Villa star, but if only one arrives then fans are hoping it’s Ndombele, as nearly two thirds voted for the 21 year-old.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”255896″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch Tottenham’s opening fixtures for the 201819 Premier League season”]

Grealish is expected to leave Villa as the club looks to stave off financial difficulties, meaning he could be available for as little as £15m.

Fans are hoping the club shows some big ambition this summer though, and a mega money move for Ndombele would certainly do that.

Leeds United fans want Samuel Saiz in starting line-up against Derby County

Leeds United travel to Pride Park on Wednesday to face Derby County and fans are calling for the return of Samuel Saiz to the side on social media.

The Elland Road outfit are currently sitting 11th in the Championship and have had a number of suspensions in the past weeks, however, Paul Heckingbottom is able to consider some of those names for the first time since his arrival.

Saiz, alongside Liam Cooper and Gaetano Berardi, are all available for the Whites and the new manager has admitted they are all ready to get back into action and be involved.

Whilst fans are pleased that they have the majority of their players back and in contention for the first-team, the Spaniard is the one they appear to be most excited about welcoming back into the side.

Saiz has been highly influential in Leeds’ campaign so far this season, having scored eight goals in 13 matches across all competitions so far, however, a six-game suspension stopped his impressive contributions.

The midfielder was banned following an off-the-ball incident during their 2-1 defeat to Newport County in the FA Cup and was shown a red card for allegedly spitting at an opponent.

Fans have taken to Twitter to show their delight that Saiz can be involved once again and have called for Heckingbottom to put him straight into the side.

Here are some of their tweets…

Another impressive, high-reward signing for Liverpool?

Liverpool may have made two relatively major signings in 26-year-old Adam Lallana and 25-year-old Dejan Lovren, both combining for a fee of £45 million. But the club’s transfer business will once again be defined by their youthful acquisitions.

At a similarly high price, Lazar Markovic is one for the future but by far Liverpool’s most exciting signing this summer. His explosiveness in the final third and versatility means the Serb has a bright career ahead of him at Anfield, and his signing has followed the theme set by Brendan Rodgers’ arrival as club manager back in 2012.

Another exciting, yet-to-be-concluded signing comes in the form of Javier Manquillo, who Atletico Madrid have surprisingly agreed to move on at this time.

The young right-back comes with very little experience but a tremendous amount of upside. This is very much the kind of signing Liverpool are looking to as a means to build the base of their squad for the coming years.

And it’s all win-win for Rodgers on this one. Manquillo is a strong worker in his own half of the pitch but may not be ready yet to be the team’s first-choice right-back. If recent reports are accurate, the club will loan him for two seasons from the Spanish champions, allowing him to adjust to life in England and work as Glen Johnson’s understudy, by which point he should have surpassed the England international and Liverpool can make his transfer permanent with an agreed-upon £6 million fee.

There has been a lot said about the club’s signing of Lallana – that price for a 26-year-old with only two seasons in the Premier League has been roundly deemed as too great – and Southampton have similarly benefited on the sale of Lovren, whose reputation has been significantly enhanced after one season in English football, seeing his value more than double. But regardless of whether those two players in particular are hits or misses, there should be far more emphasis on what Liverpool are doing with their signings that indicate a strong eye towards the future.

Emre Can is another who should feature prominently this season for the club. It should also be a season in which we get an idea of what the former Bayern Munich player’s best position is at Anfield. His was another low-risk signing from Bayer Leverkusen, with Liverpool only parting with £9.75 million to land his services.

All over the pitch we’re seeing trust placed in youth, either those brought up within the club or those signed from elsewhere. Raheem Sterling and Coutinho will be regulars in the team once again this season; Jon Flanagan has had a promising season and could be a starter on either defensive flank; and Daniel Sturridge, though soon to turn 25, is a player who can develop even further.

It doesn’t have to be a policy labelled as bargain hunting. Yes, Sturridge, Can and Coutinho, and now with the targeting of Manquillo, have all been brought in for very reasonable prices, but Liverpool are simply proving that there is another way to build a strong side. Going for a ‘youth project’ can be hit or miss, but what is happening at Anfield is very much shaping up to be the former. Already there has been so much importance placed on Sturridge and Sterling at international level.

Rather than supplementing their squad with youth, Liverpool are doing the reverse. Adam Lallana, as an example, certainly won’t be the sole difference in whether Liverpool reach their targets for the coming season.

Whatever limitations they may have – whether it’s financially competing with the wealthiest names across Europe, or near-guaranteeing silverware – Liverpool are having to more or less build from the bottom up. As we’ve seen with Markovic’s signing, they can spend big when the opportunity arises, but the former Benfica forward isn’t the finished product yet and the club will lean on Rodgers’ coaching qualities to round out the final years of these players’ footballing education.

Liverpool have struck a very smart way of moving on from their recent obscurity in the league while also building for the future. Manquillo is yet another reminder of that, and with so much upside in the young Spaniard and his fellow new arrivals, it is certainly not a poor policy to advocate.

Why Arsenal fans should be worried regardless

Arsenal’s AGM meeting last week was same old, same old. The board members at the club and specifically Ivan Gazidis are doing a really good job of saying the same thing every year without actually parting with any usual information.

It didn’t help that at the time of the meeting Arsenal were coming off a shocking week of football. Losing home and away without scoring a goal or even managing a handful of shots on target should have been enough to set up a spiky affair. However, even if Arsenal had seen more favourable results on the pitch that week, specifically in the Premier League, it would have done nothing other than paper over the cracks again.

The suits at Arsenal managed to play out that old hit single, the one that is quickly turning into one of those terrible Phil Collins songs that fill you with rage more than anything else. The words “self sustaining” and “FFP” were quick off the bat, and it was obvious once again that nothing much was going to happen.

But Arsenal are so committed to this idea of financial fair play, so mesmerised and somewhat enslaved by it’s apparent charm, that you’ve really got to question if the club knows what they’re supposed to do next.

This is completely on the assumption that FFP does kick in immediately and have the impact that Uefa are promising. What then for Arsenal? Do the club actually have a set of plans, something concrete, a logical set of ideas that will take the club forward? We’re hearing a lot of talk about new commercial deals and the promise that Arsenal will be one of the better placed clubs in European football, but what happens when the clock winds down to zero?

There’s some sort of view that Arsenal will be able to compete with the biggest teams in Europe for the finest players. But I’m sure Arsenal fans were told the same prior to the move to the Emirates Stadium. And is the club really going to spend £20-£25million on a player when it’s absolutely needed? It seems the club are banking on everyone else dropping their bids for players and coming more in-line with what Arsenal currently pay. Regardless of FFP, can fans really envisage Arsene Wenger signing off on a transfer that not only breaks the club’s previous record but shatters it?

It’s been explored in the past that big clubs are going to find ways to circumvent the new rulings. After all, isn’t FFP just a device to keep the rich richer and the poor well away from anything worthwhile?

[post_link url=” https://www.footballfancast.com/premiership/football-fancast-paints-a-picture-of-the-modern-footballer, https://www.footballfancast.com/football-blogs/top-players-in-europe-who-would-be-the-perfect-fit-in-the-premier-league,https://www.footballfancast.com/premiership/the-football-quarterbacks-and-their-role-within-the-game” target=”_blank” type=”tower”]

The thing is, it becomes increasingly worrying that an institution such as Arsenal are so far removed from it’s supporters that we on the outside don’t really have any idea where the club is going, and that’s regardless of Michel Platini’s brainchild. The club talk about ensuring the long term safety and wanting to remain competitive and be successful in the future. But surely Arsenal are the only big team in sports who have the resources to take another step further but choose not to.

It’s all about low risk and not taking chances—and I’m not necessarily talking about buying the most expensive player. If the club do have such a firm belief in what is going to come up in the next few seasons, and they can justify many of their actions of the last six years, then why not give supporters some real and valuable information on the workings of the club.

The problem for Arsenal fans is that there is no real pressure for the board to do anything other than continue on this path. You get the feeling that they’re enjoying this ride of waiting out the storm until FFP arrives, but at the same time are dreading it because they know they’ll have to take some form of action. Supporters aren’t going to run away from the club, and even those who do oppose the current board set up are vilified for being anti-Arsenal.

In 2016 with FFP in full swing (hopefully), does that mean Andres Iniesta can be bought for about £18million? Because technically, clubs have to break even and can’t spend £70million, for example, on a player. These are the questions: are Arsenal going to increase their spending or are they hoping that everyone else’s wanes? The value of a footballer is not going to decrease just because three invisible letters (sort of) are saying so. With that, how much is really going to change at Arsenal?

Arsene Wenger seems committed to this idea of bringing in young players, and with the funding that went into the training ground and into youth football, why wouldn’t he continue on that path? But there is a problem at Arsenal that won’t just disappear once FFP is in effect, from the team not turning up for games to the stupidity of £13.50 for fish and chips.

There is a view from within, and unfortunately one that is shared among certain sections of the Arsenal fan base, that everything will simply fall into place. The team will start winning, the youth set up will produce outstanding talents and the ticket prices at the stadium will be a much better reflection of the quality on the pitch. But has there ever been acknowledgement for the other clubs in the league?

Liverpool fans are happy to see what Nick Pope has to offer amidst club interest

As reported by The Mirror, Liverpool are stepping up their interest in £18m-rated goalkeeper Nick Pope this summer, performing a serious of background checks to determine whether he has the mentality to make the step up to a top six side.

Currently on England duty at the World Cup in Russia, Pope has emerged as one of the most consistent shot-stoppers in the English Premier League after a storied career that has seen him rise through Conference and lower league football.

The 26-year-old is perhaps a less fashionable choice than the likes of Alisson, but he could be a top performer for Jurgen Klopp, who has done well giving chances to less illustrious names in recent seasons, to great effect.

As a result, fans are happy to see what he can offer Liverpool if he does sign, with some pointing to the transfer of Andy Robertson as proof that Klopp knows what he is doing.
