Ranji Trophy revamp blocked as CoA-BCCI tussle continues

The board members met on June 22 and contemplated changes to the 2018-19 season, namely the addition of a Plate Group comprising the new teams that are now eligible to take part

ESPNcricinfo staff26-Jun-2018The Committee of Administrators that oversees the running of the BCCI has asked all its officials to disregard the resolutions made at the Special General Meeting on June 22.The BCCI’s acting secretary Amitabh Choudhary had called for the meeting without prior approval from the CoA. This led to the two-member panel comprising Vinod Rai and Diana Edulji barring the board from holding the SGM.Nevertheless, the BCCI members met in Delhi and contemplated changes to the 2018-19 Ranji Trophy, namely the addition of a Plate Group to the tournament, comprising the new teams that are now eligible to take part – Bihar and the North Eastern States. The existing 28 teams, meanwhile, will make up the Elite Group. However, these decisions will not be put into practice just yet with the CoA sending out an email saying, “it is directed that no office bearer/ committee member/ employee/ consultant/ retainer/ service provider shall in any way implement, act further to or in aid of any resolutions that may have been passed during the aforesaid meeting [SGM].”The board also discussed a promotion and relegation system, where the bottom two teams in the Elite Group and the top two teams in the Plate Group would take part in a qualifying super-league. At the end of the super league, the top two teams would play in the Elite Group the next season while the bottom two would play in the Plate Group. The operational aspects of how such a tournament will run were not specificed, but it was decided at the SGM that this format would apply to all-age group tournaments as well in both men’s and women’s cricket. With the addition of Chhattisgarh, there have been 28 teams in the Ranji Trophy for the past two seasons. Till 2016-17, the Elite-Plate structure was on the lines of teams being divided in three groups, with Group A and Group B being the Elite groups and Group C being the Plate group. With 28 teams in 2016-17, it meant Group C had 10 teams, and with the BCCI also trying the concept of neutral venues that season, it made for hectic travel schedules, with teams typically having just a day’s rest between travel and matches. In 2017-18, the neutral venues experiment and the Elite-Plate system was done away with, and four groups of seven teams were made.Apart from the change in structure to the Ranji Trophy, the SGM also passed a resolution to “consider and to take decisions on the T20 tournaments hosted and organised by State Associations”. This will involve determining whether outstation players, who don’t have IPL contracts, can play in local leagues such as the Tamil Nadu Premier League, the Mumbai Cricket League or the Karnataka Premier League. A committee comprising BCCI office bearers and Sourav Ganguly, the chairman of BCCI’s technical committee, will decide on this. The resolution said they will also consider whether those players who have “briefly” played in the IPL can take part in these leagues, without specifying how many matches, or seasons, in the IPL would count as “briefly” having played the league.

PCB invites bid for new PSL franchise

The PCB has invited bids for a new franchise in the third season of the Pakistan Super League

ESPNcricinfo staff28-Apr-2017The PCB has invited bids for a new franchise in the third season of the Pakistan Super League (PSL). The deadline for the submission of both the financial and technical proposals has been set for May 30, while the financial bids will open the next day.The first two seasons of the PSL had five franchises: Lahore Qalandars, Islamabad United, Karachi Kings, Quetta Gladiators and Peshawar Zalmi. The details of the sixth franchise are yet to be revealed by the PSL management, but the board revealed that five regions had been shortlisted on provincial representation and domestic cricket ranking: Hyderabad, Dera Murad Jamali, FATA (KP), Faisalabad and Multan. The PCB had considered the prospect of adding a new team after the first season but a contract between the PCB and the five franchises meant the expansion could take place only after the second season. In 2016, Sethi had floated an idea to have a Kashmir team for the second season, but it was rejected after opposition from some of the current franchises on financial grounds and the potential for controversy given Kashmir’s sensitive status vis-a-vis India. The opposition from the franchises was centered around the potential cut in their share of the central revenue pool. After the inaugural edition, over 70% of the revenue was split equally among the five franchises and the percentage would have been higher had the tournament been held in Pakistan instead of the UAE.

Dixon adds Australian flavour to Essex pace ranks

Essex have furtrher strengthened their pace bowling resources by signing the Western Australian fast bowler Matt Dixon on a dual passport basis

David Hopps11-Mar-2016Essex have completed their commitment to strengthening their pace bowling resources by signing the Western Australian fast bowler Matt Dixon on a two-year deal.Dixon, 23, holds a British passport and will be available across all three formats, subject to ECB registration approval. He is the second pace bowler with dual nationality to be snapped up by Essex this close season. They have also signed New Zealand A fast bowler Matthew Quinn on a three-year deal as Chris Silverwood, Essex’s new head coach, has concentrated on stiffening their fast-bowling ranks.Only one county will be promoted from Division Two this season, ahead of a reduced eight-team Division One in 2017, but Essex have been active enough in rejuvenating their squad to suggest that they can be one of the chief contenders.Dixon first received county suitors in 2010 after a spell in the Durham leagues, and Essex have finally tempted him to England to reinvigorate a career that has recently developed quietly since appearances for Australia at Under-17 and Under-19 level. But he did play in Perth Scorchers final group match in the Big Bash League, taking the wickets of Luke Wright and Kevin Pietersen in a return of 3 for 32.Silverwood said: “Matt is a talented young man who bowls at a really good pace. You need a number of seamers in a squad to be able to compete on all three fronts – as we plan to.”Since the accession of Ronnie Irani to the cricket chairmanship, Essex, regarded in the past decade as one-day specialists, have stressed that they intend to make a more concerted effort to returning to Division One of the Championship.A right-arm fast bowler, Dixon will add extra depth to a bowling attack that has also seen the arrival of Quinn, the former Sussex spinner Ashar Zaidi and – for the NatWest T20 Blast only – the combination of New Zealander Adam Milne and Pakistan’s Wahab Riaz.Essex have had quite an overhaul this winter. The departure to Hampshire of Reece Topley, who has forced his way into England’s limited-overs sides, was a blow, former skipper Mark Pettini has moved to Leicestershire and the gamble on Monty Panesar was finally accepted to be a failure as he was released.Dixon made his List A debut for Western Australia against Victoria in October 2010, at 18, removing Brad Hodge with his fifth ball. He was the third youngest player to represent Western Australia at senior level. A first-class debut followed against New South Wales in March 2011.From the outset, Western Australia were aware of rival interest not only from county cricket but also from Australian Rules football where he was a powerful colts footballer for Subiaco.

England bowlers rested from county action

None of the bowlers likely to make up England’s attack for the first Test against South Africa will play first-class cricket before the series

Andrew McGlashan10-Jul-2012None of the bowlers likely to make up England’s attack for the first Test against South Africa will play first-class cricket before the series, having been rested for this week’s round of County Championship matches following the one-day series against Australia.James Anderson, Stuart Broad, Steven Finn, Tim Bresnan and Graeme Swann are unavailable for their counties, who all start four-day matches on Wednesday – roughly 12 hours after the end of the final NatWest Series tie at Old Trafford.England’s concerns lie primarily with Swann, who was rested for the final two ODIs against Australia to nurse a troublesome elbow, and Bresnan, who sat out the last match, also with an elbow niggle. The management’s decision means that the only bowler playing county cricket this week who is in the shake up for a Test slot is Durham’s Graham Onions who is currently in action against Worcestershire. He appeared in England’s most recent Test, against West Indies at Edgbaston, when Broad and Anderson were rested.Anderson was troubled by a groin injury during the Australia series and missed the second match at The Oval, while Broad and Finn played the four games that were possible. Bresnan is currently in possession of a Test place but Finn, who also played against West Indies last month, will push him close after taking eight wickets at 19.37 in the one-day matches against Australia including 4 for 37 at Chester-le-Street.Rest has also been prescribed for some of the batsmen, with England’s ODI captain, Alastair Cook, and Ravi Bopara, who is favoured for a Test recall to replace Jonny Bairstow, not available for Essex’s Championship match against Gloucestershire, although Bopara can play the CB40 match that follows on Sunday.Jonathan Trott has also been given the week off whereas Ian Bell, his Warwickshire team-mate, does play against Sussex at Edgbaston. Earlier this season Bell was eager to play as much cricket as possible after a lean winter and appeared for England Lions against the West Indians.England’s Test specialists – Andrew Strauss, Matt Prior and, these days, Kevin Pietersen – will all play a Championship match as expected. Strauss will face Nottinghamshire (minus Broad and Swann) at Uxbridge, Prior has a match against Warwickshire and Pietersen will face Lancashire – but not Anderson – for Surrey at Guildford. For Strauss it will be his first competitive outing since the final Test against West Indies.Eoin Morgan, who is unlikely to be in the Test thinking, sits out Middlesex’s match, which means he will not need to make a late-night dash south after the ODI.The time span of 12 hours between a floodlit match at Old Trafford and the Championship matches, largely in the south, also swayed the selectors’ thinking about the fast bowlers. Quite why the quirk in the fixture list was allowed is something England are unlikely to discuss.

Wright helps keep Sussex unbeaten

08-Jun-2011
ScorecardSussex maintained their 100% record as they collected their third Friends Life t20 victory of the campaign by beating Essex by 17 runs at Chelmsford. After posting a total of 168 for 6, the visitors restricted their opponents to 151 for 7 despite some indifferent fielding.Luke Wright underpinned Sussex’s innings, batting throughout for an unbeaten 81 from 51 deliveries while helping himself to three sixes and seven fours. His major support came from Chris Nash, who scored 44 from 36 balls during an opening partnership of 106 in 12 overs. But once they were separated by left-arm spinner Tim Phillips, Sussex lost their way. Phillips was to claim the next three wickets, including that of Murray Goodwin who was bowled without scoring while attempting to sweep, while Scott Styris picked up two more soon afterwards. It meant that Sussex had lost six wickets in the space of half a dozen overs for just 36 runs before Wright, who saw very little of the strike in the last few overs, and Wayne Parnell carried them to their final total.Phillips picked up his 4 for 27 while Styris returned figures of 2 for 28 – but they were soon watching their colleagues struggle in reply.Mark Pettini, Ravi Bopara and Graham Napier were all back in the Pavilion with only 36 on the board, the latter being dropped twice before falling victim to Chris Liddle for only 7.Owais Shah and Ryan ten Doeschate did their best to try and retrieve the situation by putting together a stand of 51 in six overs but once they were parted Essex never looked like mounting a serious challenge, despite a brief flurry from Styris who struck two sixes while making 20.Liddle collected 3 for 25 from his allocation of four overs while Rana Naved-ul-Hasan also bowled superbly to return 2 for 23 as Essex were left reflecting on their second defeat in three outings.

Paine eyes potential Test debut

Tim Paine is hopeful of making his Test debut next month after being called in to Australia’s one-day side to replace the injured Brad Haddin

Cricinfo staff07-Jun-2010Tim Paine is hopeful of making his Test debut next month after being called in to Australia’s one-day side to replace the injured Brad Haddin. The uncertainty over Haddin’s recovery time for his elbow problem means that Paine could easily be kept on in the squad after their games against England, when they will then play two Tests against Pakistan.”I think it’s a possibility,” Paine told the of a potential baggy green. “He [Haddin] is hopeful he’ll be right for the two Tests but at the same time I don’t think he is going to take any chances with the Ashes very close around the corner.”That is something that might work in my favour. I’m sure if he’s not 100% he won’t risk it because I know speaking to him he is obviously very keen to be part of the side that wins back the Ashes so that is something he certainly won’t be jeopardising.”Paine, 25, has played 17 ODIs since stepping into Australia’s No. 2 wicketkeeping role last year. If he plays the two Tests in July he will be the second Australian gloveman to win a Test call-up due to a Haddin injury, after Graham Manou was a late replacement for the Edgbaston Ashes Test last year.Paine has been around the playing group regularly over the past year and was part of the ICC World Twenty20 squad, although he didn’t play a game in the Caribbean. His strong performances in the one-day team when opportunities have arisen earned him a Cricket Australia contract and he is looking forward to another chance in the starting line-up.”It is very exciting,” he said. “Obviously this is another opportunity to play for your country and do well and if I can do well it puts me in good stead for the future. I’m looking forward to going and being part of the side and being more comfortable around the group. It is going to be very enjoyable.”

Daniel Hogg in seventh heaven as debut haul serves up Durham win

Teenager ends Notts resistance to seal crushing innings victory for home side

ECB Reporters Network25-Aug-2024A sensational seven-wicket haul from first-class debutant Daniel Hogg propelled Durham to a dominant Vitality County Championship win against Nottinghamshire. Hogg, who already had three second-innings wickets, mopped up the Notts tail on day four to wrap up the victory, with a winning margin of an innings and 17 runs. The win coupled with a maximum set of bonus points means that Durham consolidate their position in mid-table, meanwhile Notts will be anxiously looking over their shoulder due to sides below them picking up points in their respective fixtures. The County Championship fixtures come in thick and fast as both sides are in action again on Thursday, with Durham travelling to Taunton to take on Somerset, while Notts host runaway leaders Surrey.Hogg, 19, stepped up his game in the second innings with Durham one seamer down and he sealed the win with a fantastic spell on day four, one which the young quick could have only dreamt of when he was handed his Durham cap on Thursday. His performance, coupled with a maiden first-class century from Ben McKinney on day one, has given Durham fans a glimpse of the future with the pair the latest prospects from an academy that has produced plenty of international talent. On the other hand Notts were second best throughout the match and they now find themselves in a relegation scrap heading into the last four games of the season.Resuming on 212 for 6 and still 90 behind Durham, the objective for Notts was to see out the morning session with rain forecast in the afternoon. The plan for survival took a dent just 12 minutes into the day’s play as Hogg got his fourth of the innings when half-centurion Haynes edged to Scott Borthwick at first slip for 69.Lyndon James, who made 56 in the first innings, hit Ben Raine for back-to-back fours as he looked to put the brakes on the home side’s victory charge. But Hogg picked up his fifth wicket as Calvin Harrison edged to third slip for one to leave the visitors eight down.Olly Stone joined James at the crease and frustrated the hosts as they needed just two wickets for the win. The pair continued to be solid and chipped away at the deficit, but Durham did have a chance when Ollie Robinson dropped James on 22 down the legside off the bowling of Bas de Leede. The Notts resistance came to an end as Hogg picked up the wicket of Stone, getting him lbw for 29 and the 19-year-old wrapped up the victory when Brett Hutton was caught behind by Robinson.

Atit Sheth rescues West Zone; Kaverappa takes five on 14-wicket day

Pujara grinds for two hours to make 28, while Washington Sundar marks his first-class comeback with a wicket

Shashank Kishore05-Jul-2023
As many as 14 wickets fell at the Chinnaswamy Stadium on an intense day where South Zone appeared to have taken the honours until they collapsed late in the day to even things up.Vidwath Kaverappa, the Karnataka fast bowler, picked up his third five-for as North Zone were bowled out for 198. Barring Prabhsimran Singh, who top-scored with 49, none of the other North batters capitalised against a quality attack.Related

Then Baltej Singh removed B Sai Sudharsan and R Samarth in quick succession as North hit back. As stumps loomed, South captain Hanuma Vihari, not a night watcher, strode out to take strike but he lasted all of four deliveries and was out to Harshit Rana. The rut didn’t end there; Ricky Bhui was out next ball. South ended on 63 for 4.Earlier, South’s decision to bowl seemed to pay off when North slipped to 18 for 3 inside the first hour. Prabhsimran and Ankit Kumar steadied the innings with a 79-run stand, the only period where they appeared to have had some control over proceedings. Ankit’s dismissal once again exposed a brittle lower middle order. The match marked a comeback into first-class cricket for Washington Sundar, who finished with 1 for 44. Playing in his first red-ball game after six months, Sundar who has been on a steady diet of white-ball games, mainly in the TNPL post his hamstring injury that limited his IPL participation, had the wicket of Rana, who made a breezy 31 at No. 9 to shore up the innings. Those runs could yet be very handy as North attempt a comeback against a seemingly strong batting line-up.Washington Sundar celebrates after picking a wicket•PTI

Atit Sheth’s 74, an innings of hard grind and flamboyance in equal measure, rescued West Zone on the opening day of the Duleep Trophy semi-final after their star-studded top order collapsed against a disciplined Central Zone attack in Alur.Sheth, the Baroda allrounder, came into bat at 65 for 5 shortly after lunch, and revived the innings, first briefly with Cheteshwar Pujara and then with Dharmendrasinh Jadeja. He added 45 with Pujara, who battled through for two hours in his trademark fashion before slashing a short ball to the slips on 28.Then West recovered as Sheth and Jadeja added 73 in under two hours to keep the scoreboard ticking. Sheth played some flowing drives in his knock of 129 deliveries in which he hit nine fours and a six.Easy on the eye, his footwork against spin was mighty impressive. His manner of countering Saurabh Kumar, fresh off a career-best 8 for 64 in the quarter-final last week, was a mark of his confidence. He seldom played against the turn, got to the pitch and picked lengths early to showcase his full range of shots.Jadeja was chancy, often sweeping against the turn but doing so effectively to throw the bowlers off gear for a brief while post tea. The partnership ended when offspinner Saransh Jain had him jabbing to silly mid-off.Earlier in the morning, West’s decision to bat first under overcast skies was a brave one. Central’s pace duo of Shivam Mavi and Avesh Khan kept Prithvi Shaw and Priyank Panchal honest. Shaw, known to be a quick starter, reined himself in and didn’t hit a boundary until after the first hour. He looked solid for much of his stay at the crease before a fresh catch sent him back for 26.Shaw punched Saurabh straight to silly point, where the ball got stuck in between Dhruv Jurel’s pads as he tried to take evasive action. He somehow managed to hold on to break a 43-run stand. Exactly an over later, Yash Thakur had Panchal out lbw to a delivery that nipped back in to hit him plumb in front.Suryakumar Yadav walked in and played a delightful flick to get up and running, but he ran out of luck early. After being reprieved in the slips, he was out chasing a wide delivery off the very next delivery as Mavi had a second wicket, with West slipping to 56 for 3. Sarfaraz Khan was next. After 11 tentative deliveries, he was out chopping on to a lifter from Mavi.Het Patel, picked as first- choice wicketkeeper over Harvik Desai, then came under scrutiny from Avesh Khan immediately after lunch. Two balls after being reprieved by a no-ball off which he drove loosely to the slips, he was bowled neck-and-crop playing down the wrong line. Avesh’s hard length and late inward movement had him play down the wrong line as he was bowled. From there on, it was Sheth’s rescue that ensured West crossed 200. Central’s bowlers briefly lost their plans against him, which resulted in Sheth profiting off a few reverse sweeps late in the day before he was Mavi’s fourth victim.Mavi and Thakur shouldered much of the fast bowling workload for Central mainly because Avesh spent much of the second and third session off the field as a precautionary measure following an on-field collision with Rinku Singh while attempting a catch.

Daniel Bell-Drummond anchors Kent again after Haris Rauf's feisty new-ball burst

Opener’s second hundred in as many games prevents Yorkshire for taking full control

ECB Reporters Network28-Apr-2022A second century in as many games for Daniel Bell-Drummond helped Kent recover from early strife to claim the opening day’s honours in their LV= Insurance County Championship fixture against Yorkshire at Headingley. This Division One clash features two counties dealing with injury issues, but it was the visitors who will be much the happier after being invited to bat and slipping to 20 for 3 following a blistering new-ball spell from Haris Rauf.Kent closed on 270 for 6 from 81 overs, of which Bell-Drummond scored 109. Fifteen overs were lost through two stoppages for bad light. The 28-year-old shared a partnership of 133 for the fourth wicket either side of lunch with Jordan Cox (68) after Pakistan overseas quick Rauf’s early triple-strike included England opener Zak Crawley lbw for 4.This was Yorkshire’s first day of home cricket in 2022 after a winter of off-field disquiet, and it ended with Ollie Robinson a late departure for 58.It did not yield the inroads Yorkshire would have hoped for after encouraging away performances in victory over Gloucestershire and a draw against Northamptonshire. But, even though approximately 2,000 supporters had to brave the chill of an overcast late April day, it would have been a relief to see the likes of homegrown favourites Steve Patterson and Jordan Thompson bound into the crease. The last time home debutant Rauf played on this ground, in a T20 international last year, he was smashed for six high over the newly named Howard Stand (named after the late Keith Howard, founder of the Emerald Group) by Liam Livingstone. This was a much better experience as, bowling from the same end, he had Ben Compton (3) caught behind, Crawley lbw playing to leg and Jack Leaning lbw stuck on the crease for a two-ball duck against his former side. He finished with 3 for 52 from 11 overs.Stand-in captain Leaning’s departure in his first appearance of the season after a hamstring injury left Kent 20 for three inside 10 overs. But then came the Bell-Drummond led revival.Kent came into this match on the back of a draw and two defeats, although Bell-Drummond scored a 149 in the second of those, against Hampshire last week. They are without Jackson Bird (shoulder) and Darren Stevens (suspected hamstring), though have included South African overseas all-rounder George Linde for the first time following a groin injury.Yorkshire are missing regular new ball pair Matthew Fisher (back) and Ben Coad (groin) amongst other absentees. After Rauf’s pulsating five-over opening burst, the hosts just weren’t able to build pressure for long enough in conditions which provided less assistance than would have been expected before play.Yorkshire delivered too many boundary balls under the floodlights, as Bell-Drummond hit 17 fours in 194 balls.Either side of being dropped on 50 – by Adam Lyth at second slip off Patterson – two balls into the afternoon, Bell-Drummond drove, cut, whipped and flicked with aplomb. He reached his fifty off 73 balls late in the morning and his 13th first-class century off 172 just before tea.By that time, his fourth-wicket partnership with Cox had been broken by the off-spin of Dom Bess, who trapped the latter lbw (153 for 4).Play was halted by bad light for almost an hour from 4.20pm, but on the resumption Bell-Drummond was ousted – caught at mid-on by Rauf off the seam of young all-rounder Matthew Revis as the score fell to 227 for 5 in the 72nd over.Revis, awarded his second-team cap before play, broke a 74-run stand with Robinson, who fifty came up shortly afterwards off 94 balls. He was then trapped lbw by the frugal Patterson almost immediately before play was halted for a second time at 6.15pm.
